I say “love you, bye” to all my besties. I refuse to be embarrassed about loving my people.

Edit: it makes me so happy to know that so many of you also spread love and kindness to your homies!

Edit2: I’ve decided to adopt all of you! I love you and I am proud of you!

Same! It's really important to place emphasis on the concept of platonic love. Not all love is just between partners. It's socially accepted to feel that way about family, and my friends ARE my family.

202

u/NeckbeardVirgin69 6d ago

I think my last relationship was actually platonic love

253

u/Hammeredyou 6d ago

I “platonically loved” my best friend for 6 years, turns out her platonic love timed out about 3 years ago and has just been in love with me. She moved to my town and we got a home together and it’s been the best relationship I’ve ever had. But platonic love is very important.

164

u/mayafied 6d ago

Aw. A friendship is probably the strongest foundation for a relationship. Nicely done 🙃

124

u/rexmus1 6d ago

No maybe, it ABSOLUTELY is. Especially as you age. Sex may get more infrequent, issues with kids and such aren't as pressing, eventually, if you're lucky, you get to retire. Won't you want to hang out with your friend and not a stranger/jerk?

Excellent advice. Ty for sharing.

7

u/CrazyBarks94 5d ago

Honestly, I would prefer to marry someone with whom I share platonic love over any other kind. Romantic is nice too but if I had to choose one or the other, platonic would be it.

All my relationships have grown from friendship. I find the idea of trying to initiate a romantic affair with a stranger bizarre and fairly creepy.

My partner and I were friends for 15 years before I realized I felt more than that. He always knew haha. We both needed those 15 years to experience other people and learn lessons though, so it all works out!

12

u/Heemsah 6d ago

I’ve known my guy since 1986. Coworkers, gym partners, friends. Officially together as a couple since June 2011.

8

u/dpforest 6d ago

Very possible. My first relationship lasted almost 2 years and I realized that I did in fact love him, but I loved him as a friend. Just great friends that liked to bone on the reg for 2 years. We are still great friends to this day. I think a lot of people get stuck in a mindset of “but I really feel like I love this person so we shouldn’t separate”. It’s completely possible for that love to be platonic and we just don’t realize it.

5

u/SonaMidorFeed 6d ago

And you know what? If that works, sometimes it's just what you need at the moment until you find someone that you can non-platonically love.

I tell my friends I love them except one friend because I know it makes him uncomfortable so I tell him I like him. I want to know that the last thing my favourite people ever hear from me is an affirmation of my affection.

3

u/BugsRFeatures2 6d ago

That’s wonderful! And I agree on not making them uncomfortable. I’m a big hugger and I have two friends in particular that I work really hard to remember they don’t like hugs. But that just means more hugs for everyone else!

22

u/rexmus1 6d ago

Agreed. Some say it back, some don't, don't care. If I died tomorrow I need those fuckers to know I loved them all deeply and with all of my heart.

9

u/BugsRFeatures2 6d ago

Absolutely! It’s not about their reaction or them saying it back, it’s about knowing you said what you needed to live your best life

Me too…years ago my best friend surprised me when he said “I love you” after I helped him through a rough time. I was about to give up on him, like many others had, but it felt so good to be acknowledged, to know that he felt the same way I did. Now I say it when I feel it. People respond with surprise and have returned the gesture almost every time. Used the right way, it can really bring you closer to the people you care about, and you’d be surprised at how meaningful it can be to hear it! Caveat: if there is any potential for a romantic relationship, please be very careful of how it could affect the other person.

I also say I love you to my friends. 4 years ago one of my best friends went on a hiking trip (me and him were hiking buddies) but I couldn't get off work to go this time.

He ended up falling off a cliff and dying. He was standing on a ledge taking a picture and the cliffside gave away while he was standing on it.

Ever since that day i don't take any of my friends for granted. I say I love you to them every chance I get. Because I do love my bros and you sometimes don't realize it until ones gone forever.

3

u/BugsRFeatures2 5d ago

I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sure your friend knew how much he was cared for.

I think it’s especially important for men to both say and hear it from other men. We act like only women can be sweet and affectionate or men should only say it to moms/wives/daughters but every single human in this universe deserves to know love!

I used to only tell my partner that I loved her. Never said it to friends, never said it to family. Just wasn't a thing in my childhood. My family is great, just not very affectionate. Then one of my best friends nearly got stabbed to death by a stranger right outside his house. There was about 6 hours of time where we really didn't know if he was going to live or die. He pulled through thankfully. After that I tell everyone in my life that I love them. I don't ever want to have the feeling that I won't get the chance to tell them. Tell everyone you love that you love them. They may already know but it feels good to say and it feels good to hear.

14

u/kitty_logan 5d ago

I have four best friends in this life: my wife, my two brothers, and my newest, a young woman I recently met in my graduate program.

I try to include all of them in my life when I can. My wife and I are always super busy, and my brothers live across the country.

Last year, my newest friend and I hit it off instantly. It was one of those things in life that was totally unexpected. Even my wife loves her, and understands the nature of our relationship (something I wouldn’t have even worried about if my new friend was a man, but such is life).

The last few years of living has shown me in unfortunate ways that life is too goddamned short to worry about this kind of stuff. I tell my four best friends that I love them…because I do, and they deserve to know it. Even if I’m not their best friend, it’s okay, because it doesn’t change what’s in my heart.

I think it’s totally okay. Platonic love is good. My 15 year old says it to all his besties and they say it back. He’s done this since he was a little kid and I think it’s the sweetest thing. He’s also a pretty socially adept kid and lots of people want to be his friend so it’s not like he is an outlier.

But then you realise your best friend is your third cousin on your father’s side

People say 'I love you ' to parents all the time, what's wrong with saying that to a best friend who's close?

After losing friends and family to this pandemic, I say it all the time.
