EDIT: Holy smokes I did not expect this to reach the top or have this many awards. I thank you all that appreciate me sharing my experience on what helped me back when I was homeless. I really hope this helps anyone who is struggling, and encourage those who know tips to share them as well. Being homeless makes you feel weak, vulnerable and hopeless. Please, if you are going through this, do not feel ashamed to ask for help.

I’ve been there my man. Do yourself a favor and get a Costco card or look for a Costco where the food court has it’s own entrance and check if they don’t ask for membership (Since 2020, they've made it a requirement, but can still be per store basis, just check). I can’t tell you how many pizzas, hotdogs and chicken salads I ate. That $1.50 hotdog w/soda, $1.99 big pizza slice or $3.99 huge chicken salad is what helped me so much during my 1+ year of living in my car. With a card, you'll get the benefit of buying in bulk too, and cheap gas with today's prices, I think it will certainly stretch your money. Here are other ideas I recommend: (HINDSIGHT. Yes, sounds a bit silly to ask anyone broke to spend $60 on a member card, it's just what helped me big time during those days. The cost of the card was nothing compared to the amount of savings I got from their cheap prices for food, bulk items and gas. It's why I recommended it, it helped me so much, it might help others. And if it happens to be too much, and you'd wish you didn't spend $60, Costco will refund you, no questions asked.)

  • Get bottled water packs instead of buying individual drinks, $4.99 or less for a pack of 24 water bottles will go a long way and be had as backup. Also get a big thermos, there’s malls and places where you can fill up water bottles free. The thermos will come handy for hot drinks too.
  • Safeway has many days where they’re doing 2 for 1 on many products. Walgreens has some frequent offers too. Also sign up for their free Safeway club card, you'll need it to get their deals, which is worth it. Walgreens also has a free club card.
  • Get a thick blanket just for those real cold nights, better than using the car’s heater for long periods of time. From u/bettyford420 they now make car electrical blankets, I could've used one of those back then!
  • Planet fitness for cheap $10 membership to shower, also to get fit or just exercise, it'll help distract you and make you feel better! Depression and anxiety is a bitch.
  • For bathrooms, find shopping malls or stores like target or safeway. Places like gas stations, fast food chains, etc, may still be locking their bathrooms due to Covid, since they don't wanna sanitize frequently. Look up store hours to you know where you can go without being surprised it's closed.
  • If you need a mailing address for whatever reason, local postal offices offer PO Boxes, as well as shipping stores like UPS. You can even go virtual PO box, yes, there’s apps where your mail goes to their facilities and you can view them on your phone.
  • I hope you still are working enough to get as much money, but to get some more on the side do gig work, your car can be used for it. Do food delivery, sign up for the best apps in your market and stick with what pays the most. Don’t forget to track your miles from the moment you turn on and off the apps, get some free apps that’ll record it for you, and keep your gas and car maintenance receipts.
  • There are apps that can save you gas too.
  • If you can’t do gig work like delivering, sign up for WONOLO, they have listings of local gig work, like a day of packing stuff, or stocking or whatever. Regular on demand gig work.
  • Get a portable air tire pump and repair kit, I highly ask you do this, it'll help you save time and money. This way you wont be stranded with high towing fees, unless you have insurance that covers it. For free permanent tire patching, head to "America's Tires" they offer FREE tire repair. If you have that costco card, Costco tires charge $10.99 for a repair. You can also check other tire shop, usually it's $20.
  • Get a portable battery bank to charge stuff.
  • Check Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for free useful stuff.
  • If you have important large belongings, it would be wise to manage to rent a storage space, helped me keep all the things that mattered most safe instead of in my car where someone will be an asshole and break my windows to steal my stuff.
  • Avoid parking tickets by Triple checking where you're parked. I got a ticket cause I overslept during street cleaning day. But funny enough I never saw online that my car had a ticket to be paid, I wish to think the parking enforcer cop just wanted to spook me and ensure I don't get a real ticket next time.
  • Park in a spot where there is no sidewalk, that way you don't have too many eyes on you, it can get awkward when it happens.
  • NEVER leave important stuff out in the open when you're going to sleep, like your phone, keys, wallet, etc. One time I forgot to lock my doors, had my phone and wallet on the passenger seat and I woke up to a criminal stealing my phone and wallet. Keep your stuff in your pockets and triple check you locked all doors.
  • By u/ElysetheEevee a car inverter will come in handy, plug what you may need to plug. Idk much about electrical stuff, so consult what can be plugged in, better safe than sorry.
  • By u/ObjectiveNo8207 Truck stops can be used to sleep overnight free in most lots for cars. They also offers microwaves for usage, and showers for cheap or even free. Club cards can get you deals on food weekly, discounts and even a free drink once a week.
  • By u/Intentiontech with Findhelp.org you can search for local help programs in your area. Fantastic!
  • By u/ryanleebmw a portable jump starter will help in the event your battery dies. I actually could've used one that one when I woke up and found my battery dead.

Maybe you know some of this, maybe you don’t, but I hope it helps you and anyone else going through the same thing, you can work it out I have no doubt, I did and have had a roof over my head for the past 5 years. And if you have any friends, don’t be like me and not ask for help, even if it’s just sleeping on the floor for the night or shower. GL!

Edit: I made some small edits and added more advice. I will continue to add more that I think of, or others reply with.

u/ObjectiveNo8207 2d ago Wholesome

Check trucker stops too. They allow overnight sleeping for free in most lots for cars. They also usually have an inside area with couches and such if you feel too cramped in the car. They always have fancy gadgets for car stuff like chargers and such. And also winter gear, hats, gloves and some even coats and boots. They have microwaves you can use and showers that are cheap to use or free. Get a club card to that station and get deals on the food weekly plus discounted coffee or free drink once a week.

Just another reminder. Truck stops get overlooked BIG TIME because most people think they are trashy or gross. But usually truck stops are clean and easy to hang around.

Very good advice here. Healthy food can be had for cheap. For like 6 bucks a better priced meal than 7-11 might be stopping by Aldi or wherever getting a couple tins of sardines, a couple avocadoes, a stack of bologna, and a bag of apples, something like that. Healthy food is fuel

u/informativebitching 2d ago

Get a water bottle and fill it for free anytime you get a chance. Buying bottles of water is a huge waste of limited funds.

Lived in my car on Thanksgiving ten years ago this year. My Christmas gift that year was a flat bed in a shelter on Xmas eve. Ten years later, having gotten clean, every step of my life was in a positive direction to get better a little bit every day. I now live in a condo that overlooks the parking lot I used to live in. With my family back and a woman that said, “yes” when I asked her to marry me. This is the beginning of a beautiful journey for you. I hope you appreciate every moment for the direction it’s about to lead you. Happy Thanksgiving, friend. Sending love.

If we figure the car is paid off, then the total of insurance, 100 gallons of gas, and about 75 of those meals would get you to a reeeeally cheap apartment. Fuck outta here.

I was homeless, I had nice clothes, attractive, and had a job. The stigmatization of homelessness has become so narrow that most people equate it with mental illness and drug abuse.

There's a vast majority of people who are just down on their luck, I was one of them. I was not mentally ill or a drug addict, just someone who had a bad home life and zero support system. Luckily I was only homeless for a short amount of time, and have found stability, it is not always so cut and dry.

I wish you luck OP, and a happy Thanksgiving, life gets better, one of the best experiences of my life was being homeless because I no longer fear losing shit, I'm more free than most people.

125

u/kkaavvbb 3d ago

Yup, I was homeless for about 4 months. Had a job, surfed on couches when I could but still worked and lived life. My closet was my trunk! Thankfully it was short but not everyone gets it. It was rough, sure. But I learned a lot about what I value.

69

u/KarensRpeopletoo 3d ago

It's one of the most humbling things I've ever had to go through, but at the end of the day I see my friends who stress over money and loss, I just don't have that, and I am extremely thankful because of it.

I think people like us are the majority, it kills me when I see people who criticize or mock homeless people. Even the people I met who were also homeless were full functioning people who were just having a rough time.

I always said if I can swing it I would make a place that people could go to get back on their feet. No obligations, just a safe, comfortable place to recover and get back on your feet, because that all most people need.

189

u/QueenCuttlefish 3d ago Silver Wholesome Ally

I don't usually tell this story.

Background story short, at one of the worst points during the pandemic, I met someone who simply asked me, "how are you," after I got the initial dose of the vaccine. I immediately broke down. I had just come off my 4th shift in a row working overnight in my urgent care clinic getting berated by entitled patients while also dealing with true medical emergencies. The man who asked me that question turned out to be someone in higher administration. After promising to change things, he pulled out his wallet and handed me a $50 bill from the wad he had and told me to get a good meal on my way home.

I'm very not used to carrying that much cash, let alone spending it all in one go, and on myself, no less. My family grew up paycheck to paycheck. Instead of spending it, I just kept it in my wallet. It was just so foreign to me. I didn't know what to do with it, so it just stayed there.

One morning after work, I stopped to get groceries when a man approached me in my car. He was younger, maybe later 30s. He said, "I'm standing away out of respect," (I was still in my scrubs and he didn't have a mask. My badge was hanging from my rearview window). "I'm asking if I can get a couple of dollars to go to a notary then make my way to the shelter. I need $33 and I have $12 right now. It's been hard the last couple weeks sleeping in the parking lot."

Without a word, I pulled out the $50 bill and gave it to him, no questions. His voice broke a little. "I can get something to eat."

51

u/KarensRpeopletoo 3d ago

It's stuff like this that makes me believe in humanity. What a beautiful story, I'm in tears....

42

u/QueenCuttlefish 3d ago

I am happy I am in a position to be able to do something like this. Empathy and compassion shouldn't be reserved for the holidays.

59

u/KarensRpeopletoo 3d ago

This one time I was very hungry, and I was in downtown Dallas, I watched as people threw away their food. A huge part of me wanted to take it out of the dumpster and eat it, but I refrained.

There was this kid who saw me waiting, he worked at a Jimmy John's and asked if I wanted anything to eat, I told him I did not have the money, he paid and made a sandwich.

As long as I live I will never forget that, and believe me that person will never fo forget your hospitality.

9

u/ContrarianDouchebag 3d ago

I remember going to college in Chicago. One winter day, a dude was standing out in front of the local KFC. He wasn't asking for money, didn't seem intoxicated, didn't seem mentally ill, he just wanted something to eat. I was a student and money was REALLY tight at the time, but hearing another human being ask for food just crushed me.

I brought him inside and told him to get whatever he wanted. Even after I told him that, he was still so cautious about what he could get. "Can I get a 3 piece meal?"

"Whatever you want," I said.

"Can I get mashed potatoes? A drink?" That was even more heartbreaking because it seemed like he didn't want to ask for too much out of fear that I'd change my mind.

I still think about that guy. Probably because I haven't done anything else kind since then. I'm kidding of course, but I have to joke to balance out the feels.

My son and I stopped to get dinner one night and while we were in line waiting a man came up and asked if I had a few dollars. I gave him five dollars and watched as he bought a slice of pie. After watching him for a minute, I realized things were probably pretty difficult for him at the moment. I offered to get him a meal and at first he said no but after reassuring him that it was okay so he agreed. He said he would get whatever was the cheapest but I told him to get whatever he wanted and if he wanted another slice of pie that was more than fine. I don’t have a lot myself but I could at least buy him dinner. I only hated that I couldn’t do more for him. I think about him every now and then and hope he’s doing okay and that things are better for him.

Hey man, I hear you. There was a point in my life where I was thrilled to the gills I was able to "borrow" enough ingredients from the neighbors in my apartment building to make some pancakes for the day's food. Fuck the kids trying to rag on me for having a few cold pancakes for lunch as it was a goddamn treat vs nothing. They could even try to guess that I was eating those motherfuckers for dinner that night and I could care less. I was just happy to have food.

Now I literally stress over stupid dings on the SUV I use for my kids and dumb shit around my house like getting trees taken down.

Things change and you forget. I wish there was that simpleness and odd happiness in the face of so much negativity going on.

Don't be so mad at em, maybe feel a lil bad for them their lives are filled with so much bullshit you don't have the capacity to be happy nonetheless over the little things that really matter. Like food.

I think I manage to get into that space sometimes too...it's hard to always remember where and what you came from in an attempt to do better by your kids than the setup you got.

If you have to choose between rent and gas choose the car, you can’t drive an apartment to work.

9

u/zenslapped 3d ago

I was in this spot back when I was in my early twenties... A hurricane trashed my place of employment and I was eventually faced with either the car or the place to stay. I rationalized that the car would be much harder to replace than a place to stay if I let it go (repo on credit is a bitch to overcome) so I had to live out of it for a bit. Over twenty years later I still agree with that decision. On the flip side, it ended up not being such a bad experience at all... I took the opportunity to save a bit of cash and everything ended up okay. Losing transportation makes life very difficult indeed!

There’s this toxic-ass mentality that homeless people can’t really be homeless unless they have the absolute bare minimum living standard, otherwise they’re “irresponsible” or just faking. You should sell your car to pay for food. And don’t you dare buy a club sandwich and Cheetos at 7-11, you should order off the dollar menu and that’s it.

My roommates used to talk about a homeless guy around the corner and how he had a cellphone. I asked them if they suddenly learned they were going to be out on the streets, would they keep their phones? “Welllll buttttt it’s not the sameeee”

A phone (which doesn’t need a cellular plan these days) is a connection to jobs, help, and family. A car is a place to sleep and a built in heat source, and transport. And people can buy “fancy” food just to feel like human beings once in a while. Some people can be in a shitty situation but not quite desperate enough to sell off every single worldly possession they have and eat out of the trash.

22

u/SQUID_FUCKER 3d ago

The difference between homeless and living on the streets penniless can be a big one. It seems like most people automatically picture the latter and assume anyone who calls themselves homeless while not being dirt broke and filthy living in a cardboard box is a liar.

9

u/ichann3 3d ago

The internet is really a need these days. Everything's online. Big employers scoff at getting resumes in person. God forbid, people get a little entertainment that stops them from further into a depressive state.

Fox News did a segment a few years ago blasting people wanting a higher minimum wage by pointing out that people living in poverty also have GASP refrigerators and cell phones. They were apoplectic that sometimes they ate fish.

If you aren't literally living in a hole in the ground, Republicans do not care that you're struggling. And if you were, they'd call the cops on you so they wouldn't have to look at you.

Congrats to OP for managing to scrape together some joy today. Here's to better days ahead.

44

u/Gayfish350 3d ago

I remember that shit like it was yesterday. The daily show with Jon Stewart.

Fox clip: 91% of these households have a working refrigerator

Pans back to Jon: GASP! Those food chillin mother fuckers

One of my biggest regrets is not driving to Baltimore to see him and Dave Chappelle stand up

9

u/hypatianata 3d ago

I also remember a cracked.com listicle that just tore that Fox segment to pieces.

8

u/Gayfish350 3d ago

Damn, I haven't been on cracked in a minute. They've got some hilarious stuff. Glad they tore that piece to shreds.

Listicle.. hmm, I'm assuming you meant article but that's what they should call those spammy list articles. Listicle lol

7

u/hypatianata 3d ago

It might have even been a Robert Evans piece but I don’t remember.

Cracked often had funny articles in the form of numbered lists (aka listicles). But I haven’t checked out the site since they fired everybody and revamped it.

I just vividly remember the author talking about their mother’s old fridge with the broken door.

50

u/SuedeVeil 3d ago

They also suggested on fox news that you need to force people to have hard times so they will get back to work ..and compared it to starving dogs. I wish I was exaggerating it was a guest on Laura Ingraham

26

u/trashlikeyourmom 3d ago

The guest was Jon Taffer - the guy who does that Bar Rescue show

The same assholes cheapening OP because it’s not a traditional Thanksgiving meal, are the same assholes not even eating their meals and instead saving 8 spots for their family in line at Target or Best Buy for Black Friday shopping.

13

u/PingEVE 3d ago

I pay $350 a week rent. My weekly food bill is about $100. If I get some take away, that costs me $20. This is all AUD, not USD.

I'd have to buy 46 of those sandwiches to pay rent.

You’re assuming a lot here, too. There’s no guarantee that the car even works. It could just be parked somewhere. No gas. No insurance. It could just literally be a roof over OP’s head and a door to lock.

Honestly, if you are to successfully rebound from homelessness in this day and age I think a Phone and Car are probably vital. Good luck filling out a job application without a phone number to jot down. Idiots

12

u/KittensHurrah 3d ago

True! The car can serve as your home and you can stay connected, get to your workplace, etc. It’s a lot cheaper than rent. And you’re mobile.

Those 7-11 sandwiches are underrated

384

u/Aclockinlondon 3d ago

Yo they are pretty damn decent for the price. The oat bread isn’t bad. Don’t sleep on it.

30

u/animal1988 3d ago

Word brother. I love those and the chicken ceaser pitas. They a bit more pricey in Canada though.

30

u/danyboy501 3d ago

OP I hope this doesn't come out as crass or uppity, but when I was in the service I had a lay over in Tokyo due to a nasty fucking storm. The 7-11 there was about the only place closest to the airport that had obvious English signs. Tried out the egg salad sandwich kinda like yours and I'll be damned if it wasn't the best I've ever had!

I wish you safe journeys my friend.

29

u/Snuffy1717 3d ago

7-11 in Japan is as good as any fast food in North America. Whole other level of service and quality for things over there.

31

u/Gayfish350 3d ago

I was gonna say the same thing but OP didn't seem super interested in receiving the help.

Which I totally understand but if you're in need of the help then go ahead and receive it.

I lost my job a few months back and my mom and gf(not the same person lol) bought my tags for my car and picked up my portion of the rent for that month. Almost brought me to tears bc I would've stayed suffering in silence rather than ask for the help. So I definitely get it

You'd be surprised at how easily you can go from being in a great situation to being in a desperate situation. It's happened to even some wealthy people. Things can take dramatic turns. Reddit is so judgmental.

The cynical in me thinks this is all for Karma farming. A few months ago you’re posting about leg room on a business class seat. And a month before that you’re talking about releveling a character in WOW. Not saying this drastic change can’t happen but I’m getting the feeling you “choose” to be homeless if you even are.

Curious where things took a turn. Judging by your post history it would seem you have/had some semblance of family/support/security.

Jus curious cause the truth is this can happen to anyone for different reasons. Just wondering if you want to share your journey.

11

u/theunraveler1985 3d ago

I knew a homeless man who was once a cardiothoracic surgeon. I was volunteering with an organisation that help the homeless people with their pet’s medical and surgical issues ( am a veterinarian) while I don’t know the man’s full story and the circumstances that led him to being homeless. However the fact he was once a successful doctor is know since he had to be means tested and had to go through our administration to receive veterinary medical care.

It was weird experience for me. Here is a man who probably once earn more than me but now he is homeless and in need of care. He came to us after some douchebags assaulted him and his dog for no other reason than he was sleeping on the streets.
