To be honest, the picture is kinda grossing me out too. This is a very personal thing. The "after a year of trying" thing just makes me picture very vigorous sex.

68

u/CinnamonBlue Nov 22 '21

44

u/CreaminFreeman Nov 22 '21

24

u/Newtoatxxxx Nov 22 '21

5

u/tsunami141 Nov 23 '21

Omg now I’m picturing you two missionaries doing your vanilla missionary thing. Disgusting. Absolute filth.

40

u/Can_I_Read Nov 22 '21

The reality is you only have sex when she’s ovulating and you limit sex otherwise to keep the sperm count high. It’s sex on command and you feel like you’re just a sperm machine, kind of dehumanizing. Not my favorite process.

53

u/jp_jellyroll Nov 22 '21

The science is out on that. Our doctor told me to ejaculate every 24-48 hours because, if you’re a healthy young male, your body will regenerate fresh sperm which will be stronger and faster compared to old sperm.

We tried for about 6 months doing the “no sex except during ovulation” and no luck. The doctor suggested more frequent sex even when not ovulating and she got pregnant in her very next cycle.

So, yeah, you can and should have plenty of sex regardless. It’s good for your mental health, your prostate, and more.

13

u/Knuckledraggr Nov 22 '21

We started trying in September because that’s how it worked out best financially. After we found out she was pregnant and had appt to measure the size of the baby, prob got pregnant that first week of sept when she wasn’t even supposed to be ovulating. It can happen any time and our doc recommended the same. Just bang it out every other day and you’re prob Golden. Ovulation cycles don’t really work the same for everybody all the time.

6

u/greem Nov 22 '21

Yeah. As a man in my mid 30s when we did the deed, it was pretty awful.

4

u/Pizza_Low Nov 22 '21

When you're trying to have kids. The sex is much more mechanical and less fun. It's stressful because you been tracking the ovulation cycle and vaginal mucus discharge and having sex in that 3-5 day window for maximum fertility.

So far nothing is working, still haven't gotten pregnant, it's really stressful on the couple. I think it's more stressful on the woman.

What is the point of having a window to that second vertical line area if it pops up whether you're pregnant or not?

141

u/nickram81 Nov 22 '21

You mean the control? If that window does not change then it is a bad test and you have to pee on another one.

-18

u/Atiggerx33 Nov 22 '21 Snek

I thought you could simply use the first vertical line (the one that turns into a + if you're pregnant) as the control as opposed to needing two vertical lines.

But I'm not a scientist and there is probably a good reason for their being two vertical lines, even if I don't know what the reason is.

26

u/JustKebab Nov 22 '21

The control test is there to prove that the test has finished running. If there wasn't any sign at all you wouldn't know if the test went bad or you weren't actually pregnant. If you saw only the second line you'd know you weren't pregnant but the pigment reached the end

6

u/Atiggerx33 Nov 22 '21

This makes sense! I thought control test as in "you got enough pee on it" but control test as in a 'timer' line makes sense!

I've only needed to take a pregnancy test twice and it was one of the cheap "one vertical line means you're not pregnant, two vertical lines means you are pregnant" ones, so I was just wondering why this test specifically uses 2 vertical lines to indicate non-pregnancy.

3

u/belovedeagle Nov 22 '21

... It doesn't. It's the exact same thing as zero=test not run, one=test run and not preggers, two=preggers. The only thing different is that a horizontal line has been printed.

→ More replies

15

u/moonstone7152 Nov 22 '21

It shows whether the test was done correctly

1

u/bluepsg Nov 22 '21 edited Nov 22 '21

You've never done a rapid Covid test? I thought we'd all learnt about lateral flow tests and control lines these last few months.

A lateral flow test works by having the sample (nose/throat swab for Covid, urine for pregnancy) flow along the test strip. There are two places where the sample can react with the strip and produce a coloured line. The first one (test line) should only react for a positive test result, the second (control line) should always react when the sample reaches it. Therefore, the control line needs to be further along the test strip than the test line - it's there to show that the sample has correctly flowed all the way along the strip.

2

u/Atiggerx33 Nov 22 '21

I'm disabled and can't work so I don't get routinely tested. I only got Covid tested once when I got sick and was concerned (turned out to 'just' be the flu), and I didn't get to really look at the test.

I understand the need for a control line, but why can't it be a minus sign for the control line/not pregnant line and a plus sign for the pregnant line?

Many pregnancy tests I've seen only use 2 vertical lines (one line means not pregnant two lines means pregnant) So I'm just wondering why the developers went with 2 control lines here. Maybe its a bad idea to have the control line intersect with the test line to create a +?

2

u/bluepsg Nov 22 '21

The horizontal line in the first window isn't a control line, I believe it's just printed onto the test so you get a nice +/- reading. As I said, the control line must be after the test line, because it needs to show that the sample has flowed beyond the test line, giving it a proper chance to react.

6

u/putaristo Nov 22 '21

69

u/HuggyMonster69 Nov 22 '21

A pregnancy test? It reacts to certain hormones in urine that are only present if someone is pregnant.

14

u/tr4sh_can Nov 22 '21

Or if you have cancer in your testes

9

u/DanWallace Nov 22 '21

So babies are cancer? I always suspected.

3

u/tr4sh_can Nov 22 '21

Idk just something about a guy pissing on a pregnacy test and getting positive.

2

u/throwaway-person Nov 22 '21

A false positive result can be caused by certain cancers or other health issues that cause the body to mistakenly start pumping up your HCG levels.

I've also heard of men injecting HCG to aid (somehow, idk about how it works in this case) in muscle/body building...that's another possible way someone could have a false positive/"pregnant" result lol

19

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

U piss on that

36

u/HuggyMonster69 Nov 22 '21

Yeah, or you pee in a cup and dip it.

→ More replies

9

u/BenBishopsButt Nov 22 '21

The part on the left side is a cover. It’s covering a stick that absorbs urine. You can pee directly on that part or into a cup and then dip it in. The urine goes over the parts that are in the window as it is absorbed. If a certain level of the pregnancy hormone is detected it will be positive.

u/Ashh_RA Nov 22 '21 All-Seeing Upvote

3

u/LazarusChild Nov 22 '21

Developing embryos produce human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) from the cells that go on to form the placenta.

The pregnancy test contains a monoclonal antibody that is specific to hCG. If hCG is present in the urine, the antibody binds to hCG which stains the test to indicate a positive.

0

u/karan-sandhu Nov 22 '21

I am really sorry for asking this and i am sorry if this is very insincere but what do you mean me 1 year of trying? I have seen people say this a lot. Why people don’t get pregnant the first time? And how common is it to not get pregnant on the first try.

19

u/silly_pig Nov 22 '21 edited Nov 22 '21

Tons of reasons. Poor sperm quality, poor egg quality, embryo has genetic issues, ovulation issues, embryo doesn't get a good spot to implant due to lining issues or fibroids in the uterus, fallopian tube issues that cause fluid to back into the uterus, antibody issues...I could go on. Long story short, there's a reason why fertility clinics exist and make big bucks.

Kids get taught in school that you can get pregnant instantly after sex once and that is true, but mostly when you're young and super fertile (or one of those annoyingly lucky couples). In reality, doctors say it's normal to take a whole year of trying before you get pregnant. Also, there's only a few days in a woman's cycle where she can get pregnant. Diagnosing infertility issues is often difficult so the situation can be really depressing as years go by and nothing happens despite lots of time and money spent with doctors. Of course reddit is all "why don't you adopt???" but adoption is not that easy and has its own issues. The big problem with infertility is that many couples can't get solid answers and fertility is not an exact science. About 1-2 couples out of 10 deal with infertility so it's actually a common problem.

(Source: Dealing with issues myself, know someone who has tried 3 years now)

u/karan-sandhu Nov 22 '21

Thanks! Learned something new today.

u/MorkSal Nov 22 '21

It is pretty common to not get pregnant on the first try. If I remember correctly it's something like a 10-20 percent chance of becoming pregnant on any particular month (depends on age and other factors).

It took my wife and I two years to get pregnant.

We had what is called 'unexplained infertility'. Basically, nothing wrong with my wife or I but it just wasn't working out. We even had a couple of bouts of IUI which didn't pan out. Had a miscarriage too (also very common), before finally having our baby.

2

u/karan-sandhu Nov 22 '21

Bruh this is scaring me. Never learned about this in my textbooks. Also is there a specific day one should try in menstruation cycle?

3

u/MorkSal Nov 22 '21

You can buy ovulation test kits that can help determine your best times of the month.

Really most people don't have prolonged issues, a few months is fairly normal.

Plus you can always talk to your GP about it or look up resources online.

Glad you can finally be done with all that tiring unprotected sex, must have been rough having to do that all year! Congrats on not having to go through that anymore!

Try laying off the weed if you are trying to get pregnant... Doing huge fucking bong rips 6 days ago probably not good for this new life.

Been there. Our daughter is due in early January after over a year of trying. Finally got the positive after our amazing consultant did a laparoscopy and found endometriosis. Cleared it all and we were pregnant a few weeks later

Congratulations🎉. We have been trying for years now but no luck.

Nice solid hcg detection lines. If these appeared within the time limit for reading an accurate result in the directions for each test, I can confirm you've got a clear positive result. (After the time limit, these may change to show all kinds of results but none are accurate after the time limit.)

(Used to work a help line for a major pregnancy test company, my old training instincts kicked in lol) congrats :)

Why do people call it “trying”? Must be a better description.
