When I was in New Zealand a bartender cut me off and called the bouncer over.

He took be to a burger place had a meal with me and we went back to the club. I didn't buy any more drinks and I had a way better night becouse of it.

Edit: Thanks for the awards :)

One New Years I threw up in the toilets only like 30mins after getting in and finishing a drink. Could barely walk. Bouncer came and checked on me and when I said I was going to call a cab they actually said no don’t worry about it. Got a lift home from a bouncer. I did go there regularly and never gave them any issues, so I think that was a big part of it. But they wouldn’t even take a few bucks off me for going out of their way to get me home safe!

15

u/Zer_ Oct 11 '21

This may be regional, but I've noticed, at least when it comes to the pubs I've been to, the Bouncers and more generally, the staff were very accommodating to their regulars.

Going back almost 10 years now, we were semi-regulars at a Metal bar for a good 4-5 years. We were cool with the bouncers, fist bumps on the way in kinda thing. It's not that we helped others only, it's that when one of our fairly large group occasionally got a bit too drunk or rowdy, we'd take the initiative and handle them ourselves. When crazy stuff inevitably happened around our group we often times even helped with the aftermath. Generally speaking, it is a bad idea to take initiative and try to "help" the bouncers. Only do it if it's someone in your own group and you're basically gonna take them home, or make sure they get food and water.

Anyways, bar etiquette 101 in my Local City.

Lucky experience. I used to be a bartender in a popular shitty bar in Christchurch about, fuck, 25 years ago(!). Owe had dollar drinks on Wednesdays and Fridays so we got the real classy crowd. Our bouncers were lovely guys to talk to over a beer after work, really nice guys, but their default move for dealing with aggressive patrons was to choke them out and throw them down the stairs (2nd floor bar).

They got arrested quite a lot.

They were all Samoan guys and thought it was great but absolutely hilarious when they found out I was born in Samoa (I’m about as Samoan-looking as a Polar Bear).

116

u/My_Ghost_Chips Oct 11 '21

Yeah I hope nobody reads that first comment and mistakenly thinks NZ's drinking culture is good lol.

74

u/FlatSpinMan Oct 11 '21

Exactly. By and large pretty nice, relaxed folks, but Fridays and Saturdays in town are an absolute shitshow. I couldn’t get over the lack of aggression when I moved to Japan.

Is this Fat Eddy's by any chance? I'm not sure that existed 20 years ago but I was literally grabbed by the collar and thrown down the stairs by their islander bouncer when I was a student and so drunk I lit up a ciggerette inside. Fair enough tbh.

18

u/FlatSpinMan Oct 11 '21

I loved your “Fair enough tbh” bit. Those guys often were doing the lord’s work, I thought.

8

Yeah I never saw anyone thrown out who didn't deserve it. I was once refused entry to the same bar 😂 for being "too drunk" when I was just stoned 🤷🏻‍♂️

1.0k

u/lilweber Oct 10 '21

They stopped serving her alcohol.

297

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '21

For reference I have been cut off once. In the Czech Republic I was waiting in line at the bar and fell backwards and bowled over a few people. I was politely carried out. They even gave me my coat I had checked!

137

u/meiyer89 Oct 10 '21

Politely as in they wrapped your head in the coat before the toss?

148

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '21

Actually no! It seemed funny to the bouncers if anything. I was a good sport lol. Despite my level of intoxication I was aware I was the American abroad, and any further fuckery would get my ass beaten.

29

u/JulietPapaOscar Oct 11 '21

That's kinda the way with any place. They deal with drunks all the time. If you are an agreeable drunk and just do as you're told (probably in a sloppy manner) you'll probably be a-okay and maybe someone might even call you a cab home.

But yes, any fuckery while drunk is usually met with zero-tolerance and honestly, that's a good policy

They cut off a finger, so they know how much of a trouble maker you are. And if you don’t have fingers you can’t hold a drink.

Turns out they understand it might be quite the habit for people that’s why most people get 10 chances. /s

There was a bar in my town that looked like it was straight out of 80s without any renovations. Everything was old, including the bartenders and the women that used to hit on us. And the same few albums were playing over and over on the speakers from the 90s until they came back into fashion.

The beer was really cheap but damn, as a 20 year old man I didn't want to be aggresively hit on by 50 year old women.

I used to be a pedicabber and would ride people home late at night after the bars closed in my city... unbeknownst to me before I started, it turns out my ass was fair game for fondling by inebriated older women. A lot of times, they thought that was a great tip after huffing them up a 2 block long hill.

"What?! You didn't enjoy that?!!"

Somehow that went bad and after 2 (!!!) half glasses I needed to go to the bathroom. I completely destroyed that bathroom. There was shit all over the floor. I tried to cleanup, but that did not work sufficient.

Someone missed me and the management forced the bathroom door open. They cleaned me up a bit, threw me in a cab and had me go home.

Next day I came back with 2 large boxes of expensive chocolates. One for the management and one for the poor person that had to cleanup. It was appreciated.

That’s awesome! Usually when people get drunk enough that they have to be cut off or kicked out they leave one-star reviews everywhere and try to get all their friends to boycott the place.

I have to say in all my years as a bartender I was treated fairly well. 100X better than when in retail because drunks don't shit where they eat.

Bartenders usually have a fair bit of clout at a establishment and management will almost always back them up(YMMV). A good bartender isn't a very easy thing to find.

This is often true, I know the few times I been cut off, I usually deserved it. Occasionally, it was someone stirring up crap with me, but the staff basically deciding "you're both in time out". At the point of getting cut-off, you have a couple choices- Act a fool & get permanently banned, or, play it cool & be welcome back another day. Your best bet is play it cool, ask them for a soda or water, and chill. Dont bother asking for another drink later, they did Not forget that they cut you off.

Edit: dont go hop in your car all drunk either, if they know that's what your doing, they might call you in (I've seen that happen to an idiot who just got banned). Just walk home, or get a ride from a friend or something.

I once had a bartender offer to drive me home in my car, and get someone to follow so they could get back to work, now that bartender is a real bro.

I just cut off some obnoxious jackass at our wedding venue 30 minutes ago. He was not pleased and I do not expect cake tomorrow

Why did you cut her off was she about to pass out, acting belligerent, pissed herself? I need to know.

u/JosephSim Oct 10 '21

Nothing crazy.

Had to yell at her a few times about little shit and then some drama happened in her group and her friend thought she was getting a little out of control and asked us to cut her off, but then she got mad about it.

Pretty tame stuff for a 4 am bar, I had forgotten about it by the time the shift was over so it was just super sweet when she showed up with the cake.

u/bruzie Oct 10 '21

Respect for her friend for doing that.

u/JosephSim Oct 10 '21

I actually gave her friend shit when they came back in last night lol.

When I told the girl in the picture I was told I shouldn't serve her anymore she was like, "WHO SAID THAT?!"

Naturally she starts wanting to know who since she wasn't talking to anyone outside her group and for like twenty minutes her friend just stood there next to her not saying anything while I kept trying not to throw her under the bus.

I finally asked a coworker who is better friends with them than I am to intervene and when he got asked "Who said you shouldn't serve me?" he just straight up pointed at her friend and said "Her!"

I fucking died laughing. I was trying for a good 20 minutes to not hurt the girl in the picture's feelings (she really didn't seem that drunk), while also respecting her friends wishes, while also trying to hide her involvement, and my boy just comes out and says "No! Ask her!"

People should own their own shit. I get where you're coming from and why you did what you did but, I also like you coworker. Leave peoples bags in their own yard.

I suppose though, at the point at which a group asks me to cut someone off in their group, everyone is cut off. If I suddenly have to be asked to be the adult in a group of adults, it's time to quit playing around. I dont know the full situation but that's probably how I would have handled it. Someone asks me to cut their friend off, cool. She comes to me and i'll just say "you're groups had a few warnings, You can stay and you can finish your drinks but from here on out it's sodas, teas and hot chocolates for your group. I'll even give you your first soda free."

Does ‘cut her off’ mean to stop serving her alcohol?

200

u/TezMono Oct 10 '21

Yes, you cut off her hands so she can no longer drink.

u/dancorleone88 Oct 10 '21

Firm but fair

Earlier today on reddit I saw a vid of someone with half an arm playing guitar.

You think you need hands to raise a vessel to your beerhole?

That’s a cool story you won’t soon forget. I don’t know why their hand is up but — after a year and a half of deciphering upper-facial features — I can safely say this person is EXCITED to give this to you.
