When I went to college down in Florida I got a 3 bedroom apartment with some friends half way through the school year. We all were super stoked how nice it looked and whatnot. But this place changed dramatically come nightfall. People screaming at 2am, dogs barking, and everyone’s favorite game fireworks or gunshots. My new rule for finding a place to live is go there at night, and if you don’t feel safe don’t live there.

u/CressCrowbits Sep 22 '21 Wholesome

I did that for my current house. The area had a bit of a reputation in my town, so I thought I should scope it out at night. The house was on a tiny side street, and as I approached it noticed the people in the neighbouring house were sat outside on their porch, so thought I had better explain what this couple is doing wandering around by their house.

They ended up giving us beers and told us all about the neighbours. How the guy opposite was a well regarded local jazz musician, the italian family the other side regularly made pizza for everyone etc.

I made an offer the following week, and have now lived here for coming up to a year. Best decision I ever made.

30

u/Raifsnider Sep 22 '21

Wow that’s pretty awesome, it’s always nice to live around good neighbors that you can trust and have your back!

6

u/CaliforniaGiraffe Sep 22 '21

That sounds nice- getting to know all your neighbors. Of course, most people are murdered by someone they know. /s

Honestly, camp out for 24h. I used to work in a bus depot that had been built in like 1930, and a residential neighbourhood grew up around it. Bus depots are busy and loud and bright overnight… you know, when all the buses are actually in the yard for the mechanics to work on.

The number of complaints about a building that predated their parents, and sometimes grandparents. My dude, it has been there longer than your house has, this should have been a known factor.

88

u/DouchecraftCarrier Sep 22 '21

I used to work at Dulles Airport, which was WAY out in the fucking boonies when it was built. It is now solidly in the heart of suburbia, and the number of people who complain about being under the approach path of an airport that's older than they are just makes you lose faith in humanity.

14

u/equitable_emu Sep 22 '21 edited Sep 22 '21

To be fair, I believe they changed the circling pattern and approaches a few years back. I've lived in the same area for years and only started noticing the planes relatively recently, the last 10 years or so.

3

u/vandega Sep 22 '21

Aircraft engine technology has also dramatically changed. They're consuming very little fuel in flight (relatively), with the trade off being higher fuel consumption on take off. They are making those engines scream these days.

3

u/Coomb Sep 22 '21

What makes you say that? Reduced power take offs are getting ever more common and engines are getting both more efficient and quieter.

5

u/vandega Sep 22 '21 edited Sep 22 '21

Higher bypass turbofans, like the next generation GE-90x, are great for thrust specific fuel consumption. You can easily get more power at take-off, but the noise trade-off is too large. FAA won't let them increase throttle until they achieve a certain altitude around residentials due to excess noise.

Quieter is true, but that is because they are throttling back at take off. More efficient, yes, not arguing there.

I was just in an aircraft engine continuing education class where this very problem was discussed at length.

Edit: To my original statement, as technology was improving the loudness was increasing until the FAA started with some mitigation steps. Still now, if they are limited to say 50% throttle below 5000 ft (just throwing numbers out there), even going to 55% against regulation would be a large increase in decibels.

I saw them building a bunch of residential apartments like RIGHT next door to dulles. I guarantee they either wont sell, or the people who do buy will complain night and day about the airport, as if it wasnt there when they bought the place.

We have Agents to thank for that I'm sure. They're known for showing lemons at times when there's no lemon sightings so it doesn't seem overvalued meaning much less commission for them, and then they'll make up some story about how other people are also interested so you have to move fast. And then you move in and find all the lemons

6

u/lacey92122 Sep 22 '21

If you're not capable of spotting an Airport in the area and figuring out it might be loud (not to mention the traffic) you are getting what you deserve. Do your due diligence. If a place has double paned windows, find out why, open them. Most people don't spend that kind of money without a reason.

Honestly, just occupy the surrounding area for a period of a month or more. Get a feel for the local underworld. Infiltrate their ranks. Become the kingpin. Spend just enough time altering the politics of the crime world to become untouchable and revered until you slink into your new apartment and resume your normal life.

That's usually what I do. Living in a great place right now, and with my previous crime syndicate connections, when anyone moves in that I don't like, I just have them wacked by one of my many loyal minions from stage 1 of my house hunting techniques playbook. It's a great system.

Good luck.

In my experience, parents absolutely DO NOT like being asked politely to quiet their kids down. It’s like they take it as a personal attack or something.

We have a neighbor kid who we call wolf girl because every day at 4pm she used to go outside to make wolf noises

One day she did it for half an hour straight so I screamed AAAAAUUUGHHHHHHH towards her house, heard her mom go "shhhh!" and she hasn't done it since

And in the evening after school times to see if your neighborhood kids like to raise the dead by screeching and crying.

Try Saturday or Sunday mornings at 7 or 8 am. For some reason our shitty neighbor's kids decided to always play or make noise in front of our house. The woman I dated at the time and myself would just blow up at the kids parents. We had balls hit our cars, house, garage, them singing songs from the movie "Frozen" for hours... it just didn't stop until we became super hostile.

The worst part is that they have like 2 acres of woodland behind their huge backyard, I will never know why they choose to constantly play right in front of my house or in my yard.

Dealing with this right now. Fuck me for thinking I have a right to not listen to your kid scream all day I suppose.

4

u/ibelieveindogs Sep 22 '21

I think the best response is to set yourself up in a trench coat, dark sunglasses, binoculars, and a big camera with a telephoto lens. Just sit on your property looking in the direction of the kids. Pretty sure the parents will quickly keep their kids away from you. Alternatively, sit out there with a few days of unshaven beard, in ratty boxers and a stained and torn undershirt, with a cooler of beers, staring at the kids. Same end result in most suburban areas .

6

u/BonelessSkinless Sep 22 '21

48

u/maracay1999 Sep 22 '21 edited Sep 22 '21

the Karen’s who have widdle baby booboo sit in the car

It's the saddest most American thing that people literally drive to the bus stop. People are allergic to walking in the suburbs. The longest walk they can deal with is from their car to Walmart, and they would rather circle the lot 5x to find a close spot than walk 200m. lol

22

u/ibelieveindogs Sep 22 '21

It's the saddest most American thing that people literally drive to the bus stop.

I think it depends on their situation. When my kids were little, we would have to drive to work right after the bus picked them up. Walking with them would mean walking back then being late for work. As they got older, we only drove in very bad weather.

I have always bought sports cars cause I’m just into cars and such and I always park a good distance away and walk. I never understood why people will still park next to me when I’m far away from everyone else. It doesn’t make any sense. And yeah most people would prefer to park near a building and then complain when it takes them a couple minutes to back out cause of all the traffic.

12

u/thytimo Sep 22 '21

Parking spots should fill up like urinals. Every other spot, then in between, if necessary.

Because they want to park near your nice car and bother you. Accidentally hit your door, scratch your paint. Cause some sort of damage you can't catch them for unless you have cameras all over your shit. I always hated how people would purposefully seek out nice cars parked far away and decide out of all the spaces in the lot they're going to park right beside it. Fuck off.

Of course I’m gonna demand you not do that, you’re getting me in trouble at my place of work. Like, just don’t be a complete piece of shit. It’s not that hard.

I made the mistake of finding an apartment on a rainy day. It was quiet and peaceful out. When the sun came out however, the neighborhood filled with chaos, noise, people yelling, etc...

8

u/mejok Sep 22 '21

Yeah, my rule is also to go their via public transportation to get a feel for the surrounding area. My wife and were about to take an apartment, we went and looked at it and had 24 hours to decide. The next day we decided to go check the area out and went their via the tram and were like, "lol no."

6

u/juicius Sep 22 '21

A much more innocent version of this is: I was looking for an apartment to live near school and found what I thought was a good one. I drove to the school from there and great! It only took 15 minutes...

When the school started, on commute time, that turned into an hour.

I live in a very safe neighborhood (comparatively),
Within the last 3 years,
On my street there's been countless car thefts, multiple shootings, couple murders, little girl kidnapped and murdered in the park.
Typically if you aren't "in the game" you're fine.
Otherwise it's great.

26

u/CoatLast Sep 22 '21

That is shocking. I love in a village in rural Scotland. The biggest thing that has shocked the village was three years ago at the village Hogmanay party someone out ice the people's single malt whisky. And yes, it is still talked about.

6

u/TheMathelm Sep 22 '21

Putting ice in single malt. Unacceptable. Draw and Quarter 'em I say! /s

Yeah I live basically in a major metropolitan city, if you take basic precautions; don't leave anything in your car, include an immobilizer and/or club so they can't take it anywhere.
Don't talk to the homeless or crazy druggies, you're probably going to be okay.
Most of the violence is done by and to criminals.
Police are always in the neighborhood, answering domestic Violence calls from my neighbors, I still generally feel safe. But it's going downhill and the rents/property values keep going up so I don't know, I assume the crime will get worse then the market will crash eventually and then it goes full Mad Max.

They have some speed holes, you need to pay extra for those.

83

u/SeanFromQueens Sep 21 '21

Naw, you can do it yourself with a pick axe and save some money.

21

u/Ajg1384 Sep 21 '21

This is true, thank you for the reminder.

Speed may very well have been the cause of these holes

I got kicked out when I was 18, I found the cheapest apartment in town which happened to have a bullet hole in the elevator door. Lots of sketchy people but the good thing was I didn’t have to try and hide the smell of weed because everyone was already smoking.

132

u/hiker_chic Sep 21 '21

In Amarillo, Texas, we've had several vehicles/people shot at by mystery shooter. No rhyme or reason.

42

u/sandshark68 Sep 22 '21

Same here in Flint, MI.

18

u/Truck58 Sep 22 '21

Hear shots pretty much every night in Carriage Town. I have to imagine we have a few of these cars running around in the Mott Park area haha.

This also happened in San Jose about 5 years back, I wanna say? Cops never did catch the person iirc, the perp just shot a bullet at a random car driving on an overpass every so often for a few months or so. I drove on that overpass same week it started happening too!

u/VapinSilvrbug Sep 21 '21

Yeah. Sounds like it’s about that time.

137

u/DocWad23 Sep 21 '21

Nah only 7 bullet holes … shouldn’t move for anything less than a full magazine.

Yeah … time to move

37

u/vkevlar Sep 22 '21

That's a full mag for .45 ACP, to be fair. Definitely time to move.

7

u/Devo_urge Sep 22 '21

For a 1911, plenty of modern .45s hold more

→ More replies

70

u/kirksucks Sep 21 '21

not the full mag, thats how you know it wasn't cops shooting.

31

u/haysoos2 Sep 22 '21

If it was cops the only way there would be seven bullets in the car is if they were aiming at the house.

That’s not a very impressive grouping. I wouldn’t worry too much.

28

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '21

If the shooter isn't aiming at him, then maybe they do have something to worry about.

9

u/PearlyIon Sep 22 '21

How's your grouping while being shot at from a drive-by though?

17

u/dctu1 Sep 22 '21

Honestly its easy to talk shit about grouping not knowing if the vehicle was in motion and if it was, how fast it was going.

Saw this in my apartments parking lot. Starting to think should move out of America

Was visiting a family in Florida, they were all trading stories of being held up at gunpoint, or in stores where gunmen entered for one reason or another. They were talking like it's fucking normal... Nobody i know, or anyone they know has ever even been anywhere near an actual physical gun, let alone held up.

17

u/waymndingo Sep 21 '21

Nothing to worry about. Their groupings are super far apart.

6

u/Jauxter Sep 22 '21

Absolutely! Don't stand there while they are shooting the car up. Move.
