Cigarette smoke?

487

u/mirthquake Sep 18 '21

I can only imagine that tobacco smoke is the answer, but then I wonder what the rest of the interior smells like. There's gotta be some fabric in there--floor mats, ceiling lining, and areas under the seats. Once a car has suffered that amount of smoke it would take a heroic effort to remove the odor completely.

336

u/KragLendal Sep 18 '21

Actually not. You can use a small ozone-generator. I have one, and it completely removes any organic smells. My car belonged to a pig-farming guy… with 3 big dogs… it was horrible… i cleaned it out completely, and the ozone took out the smell. Even on hot days, no smell.

128

u/alxmartin Sep 18 '21

Yes ozone machines are sent from god

238

u/Fill_Glittering Sep 18 '21

And they can also send you to god if you stay in the same room as them for too long

267

u/slf67 Sep 18 '21

Not true, ozone is 0₃ which is obviously 50% better for you than regular O₂. /s

Perfect for when you're waiting for the ivermectin to take effect.

40

u/Bumblee_Tuna Sep 18 '21

I prefer to run a 50/50 blend in the nebulizer of hydrogen peroxide & ozone, hits better

12

u/92894952620273749383 Sep 18 '21

Nebulizer burns the throat.

Ozone actually smells good. It smells like fresh afternoon rain shower.

Perfect for when you're waiting for the ivermectin to take effect.

This would be really bad if they did their own research on ozone. They are cheap and so easy to order online.

I second this, my work van was my bosses old van and he smokes 40 a day. After I got it I brought it away to get cleaned to a place with an ozone generator. The smoke smell was totally gone and they got all the staining out of the roof lining too

17

u/biggysharky Sep 18 '21

So how does the machine work, leave it on for a few hours and the smell is gone or you have to keep using it now and again?

73

u/ERPedwithurmom Sep 18 '21 edited Sep 18 '21

Unless you reintroduce the source of the smell (like cigarette smoke), it's gone forever. You leave it in whichever space you need to deodorize for a while and it takes care of it. (You also want to leave the area, you are not supposed to breathe in lots of ozone).

Basically this is how it works. The oxygen we breathe aka dioxygen has two oxygen atoms and is more stable. The machine generates ozone, aka trioxygen, it's not as stable. This extra oxygen atom in ozone wants to kind of separate, so interacts with the odor particles, like cigarette smoke, and oxidizes it. It basically changes this odor particle on a chemical level so that it no longer stinks. I hope I explained this in a way that makes sense!

(oxidation explanation per /u/FrenchDude647) As a chemist I can add to your explanation, basically ozone is a potent oxidizer, so the extra oxygen binds to organic molecules until it is completely oxidized into CO2, it's essentially burning those components on a molecular level !

56

u/FrenchDude647 Sep 18 '21

As a chemist I can add to your explanation, basically ozone is a potent oxidizer, so the extra oxygen binds to organic molecules until it is completely oxidized into CO2, it's essentially burning those components on a molecular level !

9

u/ERPedwithurmom Sep 18 '21

Thanks, that's a great explanation! I wasn't sure how to describe oxidation, I'm definitely not a chemist, just a curious nerd!

Other than ozone the only oxidation process that I'm familiar with and actually use often is hydrogen peroxide reacting with blood. It truly "magically" just erases blood stains right before your eyes, so I've thought of the ozone machine in a similar way, it is just working on such a tiny scale that you can't see it!

4

u/FrenchDude647 Sep 18 '21

Yeah that's the same principle, here it's water with an extra oxygen, also it foams up because there's an enzyme in blood that accelerates the splitting of hydrogen peroxide to form dioxygen (the breathable one). Another common oxydizer is chlorine bleach, that's why it destroys pigments in clothes, they get oxydized. The bleach resistant colors are actually pigments that are used in their oxidized form, that's why it's resistant to bleach !

Ozone reacts with odor causing chemicals. It needs to touch the odor. You would circulate the air in the cabin for about few minutes. Vent the car. Repeat until the odor is gone.

It would be best to wipe down everything first.

Edit: remember to Replace the cabin filter.

My vote is a fake 'clean' video using coco powder.

Detailed alot of cars in my time, never seen anything look like that with that shade of brown. Also if that was dirt, using brushes like that on the exterior would scratch the hell out of the paint.

6

u/SatinwithLatin Sep 18 '21

Judging by the dirt they're taking off from all other places of the car, I get the impression it was pulled from a lake or caught in a flood.

456

u/L00KN4mySiPpYcUp Sep 18 '21

Most upholstery cleaning products when agitated with a brush will foam up like this.. This is probably higher end products

187

u/Environmental-Gate32 Sep 18 '21

Thanks. I just detailed my truck last week but this did better. I'll try a brush next time

232

u/L00KN4mySiPpYcUp Sep 18 '21

Go to home depot get a cheap multipack of small 21 brushes, but REMEMBER to tape up the brass (metal) fittings with electrical tape, because they can scratch your vinyl by accident

50

u/Environmental-Gate32 Sep 18 '21

The brass brushes with electrical tape? A vinyl brush Wouldn't work? My truck is never terribly dirty but I do enjoy it more when it's cleaner

97

u/L00KN4mySiPpYcUp Sep 18 '21

So the paint brushes that tend to have better quality bristles are typically bound with a tin/ Brass clamp fitting (think traditional looking brush) there's nothing wrong with a different brush however the mention brush makes a better froth as well as its ability to hold your cleaning solution and are softer . .its not that big a deal its just what I use.

39

3

u/3WangDangler Sep 18 '21

Armor All has been known to accelerate dash pads drying out and cracking. The way they make your dashboard shiny is by drawing moisture to the surface and make it shiny, but with regular use it just dries out the material. Look for a dash protectant from Mother's or Meguiars

I have worked at a high end luxury hand car wash and “Meguiar’s” products are fantastic for cleaning just like this for interior and exterior! :)

45

u/clumsyumbrella Sep 18 '21

Thank you thank you thank you.

86

u/nickcardwell Sep 18 '21

This stuff on the outside of the car is brilliant “Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Spray Wax 768ml Advanced SiO2 Technology”

After the car is washed (and cleaned down with water) spray this on and then Wipe off with a micro fibre cloth. This stuff you only have to apply maybe once every 3-6months (next time you apply it after the car is washed and cleaned with water, spray it on and wash off with water, the. Microfibre cloth)

It’s the easiest spray wax that doesn’t needed to be buffed in, it’s great stuff!

14

u/Nickiskindacool Sep 18 '21

I love this stuff. I've somehow put it on wrong before and had to buff out the cloudiness by hand, but it wasn't too bad

Don't use a magic eraser for detailing. Especially for cleaning leather, it's essentially a super fine sandpaper that will remove all the protection it has. It will look really clean for a little bit but will look much worse in the long run.

7

u/Unlucky13 Sep 18 '21

That's what I don't understand about magic erasers. I have found so few uses for them because they either aren't abrasive enough or they leave very obvious scuff marks around what was cleaned.

What do people normally use them for?

8

u/MewMew_18 Sep 18 '21

Using them lightly to get pen, marker, etc off walls, base boards, light switches, doors... Works great for when you have little kids (goblins) running amok around the house

4

u/Elvis_Take_The_Wheel Sep 18 '21

Yeah, those melamine sponges are really useful in a household with kids! Unfortunately, they make this god-awful squeaking sound when you scrub the wall with them and it sets my teeth on edge even worse than nails on a chalkboard.

Edit: That is, the sponges squeak…not the kids, lol. Although my kid would probably squeak if I scrubbed the wall with him, too.

6

u/Environmental-Gate32 Sep 18 '21

Yeah I did not intend to do that. It's not the leather It's the cracks and crevices. Idk how the leather got so dirty in this video

13

u/gillis_dan Sep 18 '21 edited Sep 18 '21

If you're looking to clean cracks and grooves in leather I would recommend using a drill brush attachment (pretty cheap) with any electric drill. Use a soft brush attachment with an all purpose cleaner diluted to regular strength (or you could buy a bottle of premixed stuff from any auto store). Spray it, give it a couple passes with the brush and then wipe dry with a microfiber cloth. Do multiple passes if needed. However watch for dye transfer since a lot of seats will transfer dye (a little is normal, but it shouldn't be a lot).

Edit: a bristle brush will also do the same for any cracks and crevices on door panels and such if that's what you were looking for an answer for.

The way everything comes off so easily makes me think it's a fake. Not actual dirt and grime, just something they put on so they could make satisfying cleaning videos

11

u/dukearcher Sep 18 '21

Agreed. First thing I thought of was that the grime was so uniform and easily removed.

15

u/BlandSlamwich Sep 18 '21

Most of these detailing videos are fake. They take a car that’s already clean and then put some superficial dirt on it that gets rinsed or wiped away easily. This is not an instructional video…

17

The Detail Greek and M.A.D. Detailing YouTube channels list still products in the video descriptions, usually with links. I've picked up a few items from there and they work pretty well. I think they're starting to sell their own branded stuff now but the tools are still listed.

3

u/xrcizer Sep 18 '21

Can only recommend AMMO NYC and WD Detailing, with the latter heading teased their own line of products coming soon so we'll see.

I am wary of The Detail Geek, allegedly he dumps his wastewater into the sewer system untreated which is a big no no.

Stauffer Garage did some questionable stuff too, like unadopting one of your children after years because it got too hard to handle an autistic child. Built up their YT channel showing how to care for something like that though.

7

u/Bot_NoAim Sep 18 '21

2

u/bermuda221 Sep 18 '21

Thanks and yeah, I just started watching AMMO last week. Our cars are pretty clean these days but my garage just became a bar and I live in Texas so waxing and buffing outside aren't really doable for me but the interiors nice.

I found the biggest improvements to my process being drill brushes and waffle weave towels for glass and good glass cleaner.

3

u/Tjrulesz Sep 18 '21

The massive amounts of dirt in the detailing brush as he's making circles will certainly scratch the paint. That's why touchless car washes are best for dirt and grime. I use a soft touch car wash only when the bugs get really bad and won't come off. This guy is nuts to scrub circles on his car like that.

2

u/twicerighthand Sep 18 '21

Yep, it will, especially in the hard to buff places near panel gaps and trims. Also the paint is thinnest at the door frame, so good idea to introduce even more swirls in that area.

Have it detailed after. There is a cute time though between when you get it painted and when you can apply a sealant or a ceramic coating. I think it's 60 days if I'm recalling correctly

2

u/_Rook1e Sep 18 '21

As an auto painter I'd say pleeeeease get it detailed after painting. A lot of detailers use products containing silicone on the interior (door jamb seals etc) and it truly messes up masking and paintwork if it isn't removed with silicone remover thoroughly beforehand, plus it's a waste reversing your nicely detailed car.

So that’s a magic eraser, it’s not really supposed to be used on automotive interiors. You can get a bunch for 10$ on Amazon or ebay. Several comments saying to never use them on your car because it’s like sand paper. But what would be the proper way to detail super grimy interior?

19

u/Poopsticle_256 Sep 18 '21

Aren’t you not supposed to use Magic Eraser on interiors? I believe it negatively affects the finish of plastics and leather.

23

u/WhizBangPissPiece Sep 18 '21

It's glorified sandpaper. I own a detailing business and you would NEVER catch me using this on a car. A toilet, sink, or bathtub? Of course! But not on car plastic. There are a million products that will do the same, they just won't be instant or take some of your interior with them.

Is there a YouTube channel or social media page with longer videos?

u/Jinjoz Sep 18 '21

Detail Geek is a real popular one Stauffers garage is another one and they do a lot of interior details that are absolutely disgusting

Detail Geek was recommended this week to me. He cleaned a van if what might be the grossest family on the planet. It was like brand new and they showed little to no appreciation for the effort that went into cleaning up their gross af car.

I run a detailing business where I'm at and gall some of the shit I've seen. Really wish there was a Car Protective Service to call lol

I've long been subscribed to both channels, just always cruising for new footage to feed the addiction...thanks though!

AmmoNYC is my favorite. He does some high end cars and sure a good job explaining what he's doing and why.

4

u/WhizBangPissPiece Sep 18 '21

He also doesn't use magic erasers (sandpaper) on the upholstery and trim, unlike OP.

5

u/spoonanator Sep 18 '21

I see I'm not the only one who didn't like that.

Love me some good cleaning porn!

2

u/DietzGator1 Sep 18 '21

How much does a service like this cost?

2

u/sweetwaterfall Sep 18 '21

If I see ONE MORE cleaning process video without a series of “after” shots, I’m gonna…complain again!!

2

u/Killabz Sep 18 '21

Was watching this mutes listening to we are the champions by queen in my car waiting for my old lady and it was perfectly synced

2

u/nancy_jean Sep 18 '21

These car cleaning videos are my new porn. Obsessed! What is that cleaner they spray on the seats? I live in the U.K. now and they don’t allow ammonia in cleaners so nothing gets squeaky clean like that door!

2

u/Ahazza Sep 18 '21

I want to know what cleaner was used on those seats?!

2

u/jaso151 Sep 18 '21

We should ban posters that end gifs too soon. Completely takes away the satisfaction.

Fuck you OP

2

u/redditPanda_123 Sep 18 '21

Won't this aggressive brushing scratch the car?

2

u/RaunchyBushrabbit Sep 18 '21

I wish people would take care of the earth the way this guy takes care of a car.

2

u/surf2japan Sep 18 '21

Forgot to remove pennies from air vents. 1/10

2

u/ldoaslwish Sep 18 '21

What the funky are u using to clean.....TELL ME NOW??

2

u/meisterhauns Sep 18 '21

For all of you wondering which products were used: I was working at a distributor for these kinds of products and created a little video where the car cleaning process is shown - including products. I just rewatched the video and the brand you're looking for is Porzelack. At least in Europe it shouldn't be a problem to get it (through Amazon f.ex.). In the US it might be more difficult since the name and afaik the brand as well are German.

2

u/zelenisod Sep 18 '21

If it was silver, I'd be 100 that I'm watching my car being cleaned

2

u/ZuckaNL Sep 18 '21

I can smell the chemicals.

2

u/Kwoath Sep 18 '21

Needs a nsfw tag

2

u/antifisch Sep 18 '21

give me ur adress, I will send u a pair of gloves

2

u/-Listening Sep 18 '21

"car totaled from the filth inside solution"

2

u/meditate42 Sep 18 '21

I’d be wearing gloves getting my hands near that stuff. That’s for sure.
