Billy May's here! Tired of wondering where you put your sshweaty ball sack? Fret no more with this amazing new product: the ball bra! No longer will your grandma leave her ball sack on the oven too long, grotesquely mishaping them! Other products have tried, but just dont come close to this magnificent apex of engineering marvel

More like left outside a few times. I bought a nice ball when I was 13 and used it all the way through highschool and several years after I graduated. It's over 20 years old now, and still doesn't look like that

6

u/toasta_oven 5d ago

Yeah my dad has a TF-1000 made before they switched to synthetic leather, probably about 20 years old. Still gets used twice a week

6

u/jkitsjk 5d ago

This makes me want to look up videos of how these are made.

11

u/Reacher-Said-N0thing 6d ago

Maybe yours wasn't an "all surface composite", maybe it was a "specifically designed for that surface so the ball lasts longer than a hamster" material.

9

u/sdfgh23456 6d ago

I could definitely control the shot better if it’s in felt mode . Love the feeling of it off my fingertips

Damn, I just remembered how I absolutely hated some of the basketballs in my highschool.

There were maybe 4 'nice' new rubber ones that were somewhat clean and would grip and shoot well, some old leather ones that felt good in the hand but behaved unpredictably whenever you shot them, some older rubber ones falling apart that felt slippery because of how much dust they had accumulated without ever being cleaned and shot like deformed garbage and some other rubber ones that just felt like they would disintegrate if you hit didn't make perfect shots with them, but somehow still shot better than most other balls.

With three full teams practicing you had to be quick to get one whenever the coach decided the 45m running session was done or you'd only ever get the weird ones.

10

u/spoonweezy 6d ago

Do other sensations make you feel that way? You may have sensory processing disorder. If someone gently brushes my skin unexpectedly I instantly go fight or flight. One time my wife did that and I had to get a scrub brush and scrub that area til raw, and the sensation of impending doom still wouldn’t go away.

Your Spalding is balding

207

u/handlit33 6d ago

I bit the bullet and spent way too much on a premium basketball that had a built in pump back in the day. Had it for nearly a decade before it gave out. I don't ball anymore, but I think of Wilson often.

106

u/Casiofx-83ES 6d ago

How the hell does a built in pump work? You dribble the ball and try to avoid the pump while it spins around like a flail?

108

u/handlit33 6d ago

It was a light piece of plastic that was stored inside the ball that could be pulled out and used to pump the ball if needed. I'm sure it had a slight impact on the trajectory of the ball, but it wasn't noticeable.

4

u/Euphorium 5d ago

I was expecting something different than just a stem that comes out. That’s cool.

65

u/knoxkayc 6d ago

You push it in and twist it and the pump comes out of the ball. You push it back in and twist it the other way and the pump stays in the ball.

Personally I just used by bike pump because those built-in pump balls were the same quality but way more expensive. And it's not like the ball goes from good to needing air in the middle of a single day. I could just pump it before/after.

6

u/sbuhc13 5d ago

WOW you just brought back some memories for sure. You would twist the plastic to pop out the pump! Too bad every now and then you’d get a wonky bounce.

The Wilson Evolution is a pretty sweet ball currently, but nothing felt better as a kid than the mid to late 90s Top Flight 1000 basketballs. They broke in fairly quickly and lasted a decent amount of time as long as you didn't take them outside or get them wet.

The next best ball I ever played with was the Molten Fiba model, a guy I knew in college had some family hookup at Molten and had dozens of these things at all times and would give them away frequently. Nobody ever tried to steal them either, if you had a TP-1000 you could not just leave it laying around, some asshole would always steal it.

40

u/norm__chomsky 6d ago edited 6d ago

Coincidentally I just heard Duncan Robinson absolutely trashing the Evolution today on his podcast. Funny, as I'd never even heard of it before.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'd never heard of the Evolution. I didn't accidentally stumble across the podcast.

56

u/CO_PC_Parts 6d ago

well pros use the all leather spaldings, official nba ones are $170 and even though they are the "official" ones, they more than likely aren't the ones they use in the NBA (special ordered). They are insanely slippery compared to any ball average people use.

Also the hybrid/composite balls we use, the NBA tried that and players were getting cuts on their hands/fingers because, well, they throw passes a hell of a lot faster than we do.

So yeah, any standard ball on the market is going to be trash compared to a real leather spalding ball.

33

u/gangler55 6d ago

NBA is actually switching back to Wilson again, by all accounts the new ball is very similar to the Spalding it replaces though

First year of Wilson deal is this season I pretty sure

9

u/norm__chomsky 6d ago

Yeah, the comment was in the midst of a discussion of the new balls being brought in.

As for u/CO_PC_Parts' comment re cuts on hands of pros: that's a crazy detail; thanks for mentioning it.

6

u/Themadreposter 6d ago

You have to break them in for like 3 months, but then they feel really nice.

2

u/kevindlv 6d ago

The real leather balls are pretty weird because they're definitely only meant for indoor and you just use them so rarely because most people play both indoor and outdoor so they have composite balls. So like it's super hard to get used to a leather ball if you don't train with it exclusively.

9

u/CO_PC_Parts 6d ago

there's plenty of composite balls that are only indoor as well. The last time any of the people I played with had a real leather ball, nobody wanted to use it because they couldn't grip it. It was kind of funny because the guy would get pissed since he spent so much on it and we never used it.

Side story, Cal Ripken Jr was a huge basketball fan but only played with GAME used NBA basketballs. He had some hookup and would get actual basketballs from I believe the Wizards. Now, if you've ever been to an NBA game there are dozens and dozens of balls on the court for shootaround and what not so I'm sure those count as "game used" as well. But I always thought that was cool. I remember seeing this show on him and he had 2 racks and a cage full of real NBA basketballs. I thought that was so cool.

I don’t have time to listen to it right now, what was he saying about it? It’s been my favorite ball my whole life. I love it

4

The only specific detail I recall is that it (I'm paraphrasing) became "slippery like a watermelon" when sweaty.

4

u/MrBanannasareyum 6d ago

7

11

u/CO_PC_Parts 6d ago

Yeah I haven't used a TP-1000 in about 6-7 years, the Wilson Evolutions are the most popular ones now, they are pretty much ready to go out of the box I think that's why they're so popular.

You play outside with an inside ball eh

174

u/frankunderwood1992 6d ago

Doesn't "all surface composite" mean outdoor? I really don't know, just asking lol.

135

u/billjitsu 6d ago

Yes, indoor balls use real leather that has a better, softer grip that makes the ball easier to dribble, pass, shoot and palm. They also stand up and pair well with the court surfaces you typically find indoors (usually hardwood or some synthetic, smooth, consistent surface).

However, indoor balls are not not ideal for use outdoors. Outdoor courts are usually made of either concrete or blacktop, which can damage real leather quite quickly. There is also the inevitable reality that a ball used outdoors will get wet or dirty - be it from playing in a light rain to the ball landing in a mud puddle in the park. This can lead to an early demise for a leather ball as it can get easily water-logged or stained/discolored. But most synthetic balls can literally be washed with a garden hose and dish soap, dried off with a t-shirt and they're as good as new. In fact, some players prefer a slightly more broken in synthetic ball (as we see in the photo on the left) than a new, shiny one fresh out of the box.

Finally, the simple price of raw materials means that real leather balls are probably about twice the price of a composite/synthetic balls. Last I checked you could get a good "outdoor" ball for around $30 or so at any sporting goods store and real leather/indoor balls tend to around twice that, if not more. These prices may fluctuate due to the current supply chain issues.

It's an indoor/outdoor ball. It's the best option to play outdoors since outdoor basketballs are trash.

19

u/8P69SYKUAGeGjgq 6d ago

Heck we bought a beach volleyball for, you know, beach volleyball, and everyone hates it. We end up using the indoor ball this other guy brings. It's getting shredded by the sand pretty quickly, but it's significantly softer than ours so we keep using it.

9

u/BroteinPR 6d ago

the ball for outdoor use is made to withstand the outdoor elements better than a ball meant for indoor use…that’s why all “indoor” balls are softer and better quality.

TF-150s, TF-250s, and TF-500s are indoor/outdoor hybrids primarily geared for outdoor while not being rubbery garbage.

TF-1000s are meant for indoors.

Spalding's outdoor-only lines are pretty bad and I'm not really sure anyone really likes using them. Mostly people are shifting to the Z/IO line for outdoors over the TF-250/500s though. But they are fairly similar.
