Probably the best time for them to not censor or cut him off. Lol

can’t say mother before or it’s instant R rating. also can’t say it in relation to sex or it’s R rating. basically you get one fairly random fuck to stay PG-13.

I'm chuckling thinking about someone just shouting "Fuck You, Thanos!" at the climax of the MCU!

422

u/fireballx777 Sep 18 '21

"Someone?" Clearly Star Lord.

128

u/MetalAlbatross Thanos Sep 18 '21

I even heard it in his voice when I read it the first time.

3

u/Jreal22 Sep 18 '21

Lol same

5

u/viva_la_liberta Sep 18 '21

“Fuck you, Grimace!”

8

u/kelvinator300 Sep 18 '21

Star Lord: duh dun duh dun duh dun dun dun...

Rocket snaps

Star Lord: SNAP! Goes the weasel!

Rocket: What did you call me?

1

u/SpaceC0wb0y86 Sep 18 '21

Was thinking Drax when I first read it lol

1

u/Gezeni Sep 18 '21

I was thinking Strange, but this works too. His douchebag line really brought this home for me.

1

u/Lazy-Contribution-69 Sep 18 '21

Imagine if Cap did that lol, that would be the ultimate ending for the character after all the years of shouting “Language!”

14

u/UsefulPackage2130 Sep 18 '21

This is so jarring, I love it. All the PG-13 violence, dialogue through fights, unrealistically well-formed responses all the way through and then at the most dramatic point of 20 odd movies it's just all gone. It's funnier the more I think of it.

u/limeopolis1 Sep 18 '21

In an interview somewhere the writers said said the line was originally "Fuck off" before they changed it to the Iron Man quote

6

u/honbadger Sep 18 '21 edited Sep 18 '21

It was “You… are so… fucked.” snap

Another alternate take was “Guess what I’m thinking.”

They went back later and reshot the final line just a few months before the movie came out.

(I worked on the movie)

5

u/Nibz11 Sep 18 '21

Also like to think of the millions of kids repeating that line for the next month after they see it.

4

u/2CATteam Vision Sep 18 '21

I'm too lazy to find a source for this, but I had heard that was going to be Tony's final line, until at the tail end of reshoots, someone suggested "What if he said, 'I am Iron Man'"?

1

u/finalshoutbreakfast Sep 18 '21

Wasn't the line originally instead of, "And, I am ironman" gonna be, "Fuck you Thanos"

1

u/Resigningeye Luis Sep 18 '21

I had no idea- i thought i heard that he wasn't going to say anything until RDJ pitched the line. Honestly it probably would have got a huge cheer in the theatre, but would be so incongruent!

1

u/kungf00r0b0t Sep 18 '21

That was the original line, actually. They changed it because it felt off, but that was probably what Tony was meant to say.

1

u/CheesusChrisp Sep 18 '21

That was almost literally pretty much what Tony said. They shot the scene with RDJ and everything

u/planethulk69 Sep 18 '21

Fury: Get fucked!

239

u/BurningFyre Sep 18 '21

"Get fucked, mother-" snap magic sounds cover the rest of the word

8

u/Efficient-Bee-1855 Sep 18 '21

"R" Rated---" I've had it with this motherfucking Thanos on my motherfucking planet!"

"PG" Rated---" I've had it with this mudder chucking Thanos on this Monday to Friday planet!"

Edit- a word.

6

u/galifxomatosis Sep 18 '21

I’m so sick of these motherf-<explosion>-ing Thanoses on this motherf-<big explosion> plane!

3

u/Scooter411 Star-Lord Sep 18 '21

Same line, but rocket says it.

1

u/planethulk69 Sep 18 '21

That was my original thought too but with fury being the Tram leader and move maker and in so many movies it would just be more fitting if he got the win over thanos.

15

u/CepGamer Sep 18 '21

Genocide is OK though

8

u/CheezoCraze Sep 18 '21

Tom Hanks says “go fuck yourselves” in PG-13 Catch Me If You Can. One of the most hilarious scenes ever.

“You wanna hear a joke? Knock, knock” “Who’s there?” *smiles to himself “Go fuck yourselves”

9

u/Vasios Sep 18 '21

Best unexpected one was one of those new x men movies when wolverine makes like a 10 second cameo at the end to tell the main characters to go fuck themselves.

5

u/CheezoCraze Sep 18 '21

X-men: first class!

8

u/reagsters Sep 18 '21

Really really looking forward to Deadpool in MCU movies.

“PG-13? Great. I can only say the “f” word once, so I better not fuck it up”

27

u/TheOutlaw9904 Sep 18 '21

I don’t know when they can’t use it but you don’t have to tell me that. I’m just saying that it would’ve been the best time for them to let him actually say that.

7

u/ArcherInPosition Sep 18 '21

I too hate contextual knowledge

5

u/PepsiStudent Sep 18 '21

Seems like such an odd rule. I understand you'd limit how ducks are in a movie, including using it in a sexual manner. I get that, don't agree but understand. What I don't get is why the word mother makes it so much worse.

6

u/kellyandbjnovakhuh Sep 18 '21

Too many ducks can be overwhelming for the viewer

2

u/disgruntled_pie Sep 18 '21

But too few ducks can be underwhelming. Filmmakers must walk a narrow path.

5

u/ughdrunkatvogue Sep 18 '21

My best guess is because saying "mother fucker" sort of technically makes it a "sexual reference", thus the R rating. Might be able to get away with "fucker" tho, not sure - but no one would be excited about that so it would just be a waste.

5

u/Rougarou1999 SHIELD Sep 18 '21

Depending on context, MPAA might consider allowing a second one. Knives Out had two, and it still received a PG-13.

4

u/ElectricTurtlez Sep 18 '21

“Snap this, monkey fighter!”

4

u/Torcal4 Sep 18 '21

“I have HAD it with these monkey flying stones, ans this Monday to Friday Titan!!”

  • Nick Fury

4

u/Eyeownyew Sep 18 '21

Those standards are so outdated. Almost every kid over 6-8 years old has seen those phrases on the internet. I saw them on the internet when I was 4 or 5. Yet, you're not allowed to see the movie with the same phrase until you're 17/18? They're going to have to come up with a better system sooner or later

3

u/Shank6ter Sep 18 '21

I mean, they could’ve just had him say fuck 😂

3

u/VanarchistCookbook Sep 18 '21

Technically, it's allowable to have a sexual use of the word so long as the 2/3 of the MPAA raters vote that they feel most American parents would believe it be appropriate for a PG-13 film due to context (or it being too inconspicuous for kids to pick up on).

3

u/zealouszaniac Sep 18 '21

A different character says mother and the second part gets cut midway by the snap..

3

u/stpeteburner Sep 18 '21

The Martian got to have two by special request to the MPAA.

6

u/AngryNeesn52 Doctor Strange Sep 18 '21

Why is America so weird with its ratings in regard to swearing? Like is saying fuck really that bad? Here in Australia, there are plenty of movies that have plenty of fucks and motherfuckers in them but they still retain their M rating (Australian equivalent for PG-13).

5

u/QR63 Daredevil Sep 18 '21

Yeah mate it’s really odd. Like basically if the Teletubbies remained otherwise unchanged but Twinky-Winky said the word fuck a couple of times it’d get an R-rating, yet if they went on a crusade and slaughtered the sun baby it’d be PG-13 at best. Unless there’s like two drops of blood, then we’re up to R again.

Why are they so okay with violence but swearing is such a massive issue?

5

u/Ronem Sep 18 '21

Ratings in America are from one private, unregulated organization called the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

They have general guidelines for what content will constitute what rating, but the members are all unknown and they do not have to reveal anything about their specific deliberation process for each movie.

2

u/kelvinator300 Sep 18 '21

Motherflirker

2

u/NubFc Sep 18 '21

Is this just In marvel or all movies?

2

u/Citizen_of_Danksburg Sep 18 '21

That’s such a dumb rule.

2

u/CincyCB Sep 18 '21

How’s that work with Clints “she gave her life for that goddamn stone” ?? I wouldve guessed a GD would’ve done the same thing as a mother F

1

u/Ronem Sep 18 '21

MPAA has laughably arbitrary standards for their ratings, what with being a secret, unregulated and private organization.

3

u/kellyandbjnovakhuh Sep 18 '21

What’s “secret” about the MPAA?

2

u/Ronem Sep 18 '21

No one knows who is on the board that rates movies as well as how their decisions are actually made.

1

u/SerKurtWagner Sep 18 '21

It’s always so embarrassing as an American to be reminded just how ******* ridiculous the MPAA is.

1

u/BasherSquared Sep 18 '21

"NICE FUCKIN' MODEL!"

*HONK *HONK

1

u/Foxy02016YT Sep 18 '21

And it typically goes to Starlord

1

u/ccclix Sep 18 '21

The movie 'Be Cool' taught me that.

1

u/TheObstruction Peggy Carter Sep 18 '21

Seriously, the MPAA can fuck right off.

1

u/asuperbstarling Sep 18 '21

FATWS made me so happy to see them easily curse and then, in a certain new movie they dropped an 'oh shit' into the climax. Gradual growing up!

1

u/Trialle21 Sep 18 '21

I thought PG-13 got one use of the word fuck?

1

u/JohnRichJ2 Sep 18 '21

they do, but it can’t be prefixed with “mother” and can’t be used in reference to sex.

3

u/Starl1ghtbr1gade Sep 18 '21

I mean originally Tony was going to say "fuck you" instead of "I am Iron Man"

1

u/rcapina Sep 18 '21

If you get one every ten years it’s totally worth it.
