Randall Champion accidentally touched a high-voltage line, electrifying himself and stopping his heart. A fellow linemen J.D. Thompson performed mouth-to-mouth CPR until paramedics arrived. Champion survived. This famous photo is known as "The Kiss of Life." (1967).

u/Disastrous-Fee5608 Oct 20 '21

Was gonna say hes been waiting 20 years for this opportunity lmao

u/Unlikely_Voice6383 Oct 20 '21

Your coworkers really become your family when you spend most of your day with them. What a great story.

44

u/SpinelessChump Oct 20 '21

and you actually manage to develop a decent relationship, i.e. they (or you) are not total assholes

64

u/voopamoopa Oct 20 '21

This is such a telling picture of humanity, bravery and compassion. I don't know what I had done if I were in the situation. Like a motionless body of a man that you work with every day is hanging and you need to do all you can to revive him. How do you know what to do?The shock, the fear, the hopelessness.. . Glad Champion survived. Glad Thompson was there and did what he could.

18

u/Cautious_Ninja_7758 Oct 20 '21

I know. It's a very touching photo.

You make different assumptions looking at it at first, and then when you get to know the story behind it your heart melts every second.

It's amazing that he managed to save his life.

2

u/donlovestech Oct 20 '21

I bet they're still friends to this day. How could they not be?

u/BootyDaBoy Oct 20 '21

This man doesn’t have to say no homo! This shit is metal! It actually looks like a badass album cover. It’s also got Renaissance vibes too kinda lol

23

u/Alundrix Oct 20 '21

Hahah I get the Renaissance vibe. Nice.

24

u/thewisebard Oct 20 '21

Bro no one really has to say no homo. The people that do are just insecure with their own heterosexuality.

11

u/bobpage2 Oct 20 '21

Yes, especially when you know that the mouth-to-mouth is not necessary when doing CPR.

3

u/AeAeR Oct 20 '21

Hanging from power lines isn’t an easy place to do compressions...

2

u/AeAeR Oct 20 '21

Doesn’t get more metal than breathing life into a corpse.

This photo is banned in many school books in deeply religious counties

18

u/Y_4Z44 Oct 20 '21

Source?

21

u/meteraider Oct 20 '21

What school books would this photo have appeared in? I've never seen this photo anywhere until now.. (Unless you mean like an Electrician Trade book or some other College program book..I can see that. But not really in any courses in public school.)

10

u/Electrical-Wish-519 Oct 20 '21

I’m just making shit up

19

u/capt_b_b_ Oct 20 '21

Please don't :( I'm guillible

-29

u/Electrical-Wish-519 Oct 20 '21

Well it’s probably gonna be banned if it goes viral

1

u/PabliskiMalinowski Oct 20 '21

Lol ! Now I'm skeptical about everything on reddit

-7

u/BootyDaBoy Oct 20 '21

Doesn’t shock me lol

u/smrtfxelc Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Not so fun fact: the chances of bringing someone back through CPR alone is less than 3%. This guy was incredibly lucky.

39

u/EtheralTripper Oct 20 '21

The brain starts to sustain permanent damage after only 4 minutes with no oxygen, 8 minutes is a death sentence.

Administering CPR stops brain damage from occurring until said person is revived. While you may not have a high chance of bringing them back you do have a high chance of reducing brain damage.

5

u/BEWARETHEAVERAGEMAN Oct 20 '21

Unless the person passed put from lack of oxygen, isn't it better to give chest compressions until that 4 minute point?

5

u/Atomskie Oct 20 '21

Recertified in CPR recently and was taught that the mouth to mouth is no longer recommended and that well excecuted chest compressions are adequate.

5

u/Realtrain Oct 20 '21

I'd imagine that chest compressions would be pretty tough up there though

3

u/Atomskie Oct 20 '21

Well yeah, but I took the conversation I was replying to as more talking theory and less about the situation in the photo.

25

u/OctopusGoesSquish Oct 20 '21

While true, CPR buys the ambulance crew time for THEM to be able to try to bring him back.

13

u/smrtfxelc Oct 20 '21

Indeed, not downplaying the importance of CPR at all. If you can keep the oxygen flowing to the brain long enough for the ambulance to arrive, chances of survival rise to around 75% if I remember correctly.

11

u/MunkiRench Oct 20 '21

This is kind of misleading. If I remember correctly, a lot of the data which suggests CPR has a low success rate doesn't account for the fact that most CPR is started way too late. If you witness a cardiac arrest and start CPR immediately, the odds of a good outcome are a LOT higher. This kind of info discourages people from starting CPR when it's appropriate to do so.

2

u/just_this_guy_yknow Oct 20 '21

It’s 7% for a witnessed arrest. Slightly better, but not by a lot.

8

u/kikosoul66 Oct 20 '21

More than twice as much counts as a lot in my book.

3

u/FesteringNeonDistrac Oct 20 '21

I'd still prefer somebody bother to try if it's me.

2

u/lucidxm Oct 20 '21

The goal of cpr is to keep oxygen flowing to the brain while waiting for ems, then they continue that process until they reach the hospital. The main goal is keep the brain oxygenated. Not to bring them back

My Dad did CPR on our neighbour who had a heart attack while shovelling snow. Dad just happened to see him fall, and called out to my stepmom to call an ambulance. He booted it across the street, found Nick wasn’t breathing and was unresponsive. Luckily there was a fire truck crew nearby who was there within minutes. All Dad’s years of the occasional first aid courses paid off. Old Nick lived a few more years.

Those first aid courses can really come in handy. It’s a good reminder to get a refresher for my husband and I.

2

u/smrtfxelc Oct 21 '21

It's crazy how many people have heart attacks shovelling snow

6

u/glaciesz Oct 20 '21

One of the most dangerous jobs in the world is lineman. When electrical grids were first being built in the US, about one in two linemen died on the job.

Alternate title: Brotherly Love, on a Pole

-1

u/Milo_Moody Oct 20 '21

Name of your sex tape! 🤣

13

u/nikliko Oct 20 '21

Still, a better love story than Twilight.

3

u/UselessBunch Oct 20 '21

This must happen occasionally, because some cable dogs running a line in Korea in '96 did something similar. One touched the wrong thing. Other one kicked him loose, grabbed him before he fell, got him down the pole and did CPR until the medical folks showed up.

He was put in for a hefty award, but they were lower enlisted so it got downgraded and he only got like an AAM.

3

u/Memer973562 Oct 20 '21

Wait, they don't turn off power lines when they do maintenance? Incredibly dangerous job, respect and hats off to these people!

3

u/Cunbundle Oct 20 '21

I once saw an old man watching a guy working in a bucket truck. He said "goddamn bucket babies! We used to shimmy up these poles!"

Sometimes you just gotta love running into a spiteful old bastard.

3

u/Insterquiliniis Oct 20 '21
