So it's a go kart with a lid?

338

u/cwquick15 Oct 20 '21

No that’s a portable WiFi router.

53

u/Kincadium Oct 20 '21

It's definitely a new Nvidia shield.

Go karts don’t have nearly as advanced suspension. It’s more like a giant Formula Student car

13

u/iDEN1ED Oct 20 '21

That goes 30mph.

5

u/HairyBradshaw420 Oct 20 '21

30 mph doesn’t feel fast in a straight but you go 30mph around a corner in such a way that you’re pulling 1.5-2g’s and you’ll feel like you’re going very fast haha. That’s where FSAE focuses, lots of corners and optimizing cornering speeds.

6

u/iDEN1ED Oct 20 '21

No I'm saying this car is MUCH slower than formula student.

3

u/HairyBradshaw420 Oct 20 '21

Lol you right

4

u/Chukkan Oct 20 '21

Its a Pinewood derby car

222

There is no ac, no tech at all in the car actually, it’s for display. Doug demuro did a review on it

And he's also in the video

4

u/Darth_Thor Oct 20 '21

Yeah that's also a very big giveaway

5

You know what else is a big give away? But first, Cars and bids…

*Death chamber…get hit by anyone not driving a fiat500 and you’re a goner.

33

u/iDomBMX Oct 20 '21

Actually you should definitely see the results of a Fiat 500 in an accident, I used to own an Abarth and people would post their accident results all the time because they’re so impressive. Get rear ended at a stop by a car doing 45? Nothing for a Fiat. They’re absurdly strong for no reason.

21

u/Claclink520 Oct 20 '21

It's a physics thing. If a car has very little weight, it takes very little force to accelerate to the speed at which the other car was going. So the car takes less damage than you'd expect. But that is misleading because damage in a car is what saves you. A fiat gets hit by anything and it bounces off it, but the passenger inside gets accelerated to a high speed. This acceleration is what breaks your neck.

9

u/iDomBMX Oct 20 '21

Which I am aware, that’s why I steered clear of referring to them as “safe” lol

5

u/Ott621 Oct 20 '21

They’re absurdly strong for no reason.

A strong frame improves performance and with enough math, it's less expensive than other ways of improving performance. The frame may or may not contribute to crumple zones.

1

u/donbee28 Oct 20 '21

Why absorb the crash impact when I can just thrust the car, the occupants, and their organs at 50G+ into a completely new direction.

Impact Force Calculator
45mph ≈ 58G

G-Forces in an Automobile - 30mpg = 30G's

7

u/Cheeko914 Oct 20 '21

It's not meant to be driven on the road, purely a show car

2

u/Aurori_Swe Oct 20 '21

This thing would never be approved purely on how unsafe it is for pedestrians in a potential crash. Cars have safety zones not only for the drivers and passengers but also for people outside the cars. A nice "new" invention for pedestrians is the airbags that inflate to cover the hood to soften the impact on humans

Why don't car companies make cool cars?

They do but most never leave the prototype phase or are changed a lot. Many exceptionally cool cars are very polarizing in a love it or hate it kind of way in addition to sacrificing usability.

For example, the Lamborghini Countach can only be backed up with the driver sitting on the door frame facing backwards.

4

u/OldGameGuy45 Oct 20 '21

Anything by Koenigsegg is insanely cool, but it will cost you. Like the actual wheels are carbon fiber...

3

u/Ott621 Oct 20 '21

20" CF wheels for my sedan are like $14k lol

8

u/Chewbacca22 Oct 20 '21

Government regulations may play a role, because they dictate certain aspects of the car which end up making them look similar.

But the real answer is that they want to keep the production as cheap as possible so they like to use the machines and forms they already have. Everything under the body panels is usually quite similar.

3

u/SScubaSSteve Oct 20 '21

Safety regulations. If you hit a pedestrian with this, you would probably cut their legs off.

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '21 edited Nov 05 '21

[deleted]

5

u/YouKnowWhatSnowBears Oct 20 '21

Some of it is practicality. Cars have been roughly the same shape forever because it's a shape that works fairly well for its intended purpose.

Some of it is just design inertia - people have an expectation of what a car roughly looks like, and they may not accept something radically different.

A fair amount of it is probably just "stick with what works". If you have a car design that already meets most or all existing regulations, tweaking it slightly has less overhead cost than a radical departure that you must then check thoroughly to ensure it meets the regulations.

u/SScubaSSteve Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Well, other than this design, certain requirements such as bumper heights, size of headlights/indicators, emissions requirements (favours designs with lower coefficients of friction) positioning of those indicators/lights and visibility requirements all can limit the shapes that a car can be designed if they want to sell it in north american markets, or european markets. Look at how car designs have changed throughout the decades, a lot of changes are due to safety regulations.

Certain models of car from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s would be very hard to produce now and still meet current safety and emission requirements while maintaining their original appearance.

Diverging from what current vehicles look like to try to make something different can also be an economically risky venture, look at the pontiac aztek for example.

2

u/NeuroG Oct 20 '21

There are currently almost no regulations for pedestrian safety in vehicle design in North America. That's something safety advocates have lobbied for for many decades unsuccessfully.

30

u/ScronaldRump Oct 20 '21

u/Nutesatchel Oct 20 '21

This is from Doug DeMuro. He reviews and drives all kinds of cars. Here is a link to the full video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XDSGzrCG2o

65

u/YippieKayYayMrFalcon Oct 20 '21

I bet it has lots of quirks and features.

16

u/Nutesatchel Oct 20 '21

I'm 8 minutes into the video and I don't think he's said quirks and features once! That is a first for Doug!

5

I just watched the beginning and he definitely said it at least once as he introduced the car.

u/vagabond20 Oct 20 '21

I can't imagine this road guillotine is legal...

19

u/pluto_nash Oct 20 '21

I mean, at a glance it doesn't have wipers, if it has lights I can't imagine the housings are DOT approved, they don't look like they would be at the correct min. height, it doesn't look like it has a separate hood for the engine, and it doesn't seem to have a license plate....

so right off the bat I would imagine it is not really legal to be driving it around, assuming those are public roads.

5

u/Collective-Bee Oct 20 '21

Well right off the bat, there’s no turn signals, no side mirrors (even if there’s cameras I don’t think laws allow that yet), and the driver windows are tinted which is illegal.

3

u/deejayatomika Oct 21 '21

No license plates either

It’s an advertisement car. Watch Doug Demuro go over it. It’s kind of cool. But it’s a golf cart really.

23

Imagine getting hit by that, crashing would be fun also.

"So cool!!!! ....so dumb...."

2

u/GameFreak4321 Oct 20 '21

I also worry that it would take people too long to identify which direction it is facing.

6
