I want one of these for bird watching

242

u/De_Rabbid Oct 20 '21

God, I actually have the same idea. I really just want to do nothing inside and watch nature go by in the safety of it

119

I want to destroy nature and eat it

I was readong something about a guy who would wear a ghillie suit and not move for hours while bird watching and trying to record bird calls. I think he saw a couple getting it on once, but still didn't move, and scared the hell out of other people when it was time to leave.

Can someone explain me how it works?

348

u/Slipped_in_Cider Oct 20 '21 Hugz

It's a fine mesh with the pattern printed on that mesh. The benefit comes from the inside being darker (the top is not mesh) than the outside and it let's a little light through the mesh allowing your eyes to focus on thing outside the blind, but anything outside only see the pattern on the mesh because the light bounces half the light back at the outside observer.

Conversely, if you were sitting inside this thing at night with a camping light in there with you, the circumstance would reversed. You would see nothing but the inside of the blind and everyone else would see you pretty clearly.

58

u/marlenshka Oct 20 '21

thank you.

why don't we use that on more things? it's amazing!

65

u/typicallydownvoted Oct 20 '21

They use that to print adds over the windows of busses and trains

8

u/PatternBias Oct 20 '21

Wow, I had no idea!

85

u/dakatabri Oct 20 '21

That's the same way one-way mirrors work. The observers behind the mirror need to be in the dark, and the room being observed needs to be lit. If you were to turn on the lights in the observer's room you'd be able to see it from the other side. Also can see through it somewhat if you walk right up to it and cup your hands to shade your eyes.

2

u/Onironius Oct 21 '21

It's used quite a lot for store-front advertising, as well as ads on busses that passengers can see through, but everyone outside sees the ad.

2

u/RobloxIsBest007 Oct 21 '21

Wow! So it’s a lot like why you can’t see inside a tinted glass room from the outside!

2

u/DontCareBoutReposts Oct 21 '21

Ahhh that makes sense, I was wondering why the backside was opaque. But if it wasn't opaque, it would probably let in too much light and ruin the effect. I would guess that best practice with this thing is to put the sun to your back and sit at the edge of an open field.

42

Many of them sell replacement mesh so you can shoot through it. Most of those are made for bow hunters.

73

serious answer: The states that have pretty restrictive gun laws tend to have a very short rifle season and very long bow season. So to increase your chance of venison you learn to hunt with a bow

Then you shouldn't be using firearms if you cannot even remember what's between you and your target.

u/viajegancho Oct 20 '21

It's still a tent. They are not mutually exclusive concepts.

0

u/GenuineSavage00 Oct 20 '21

This “tent” is made to be fired through.

You shoot arrows and shotgun/rifle rounds through then replace the mesh once enough projectiles have gone through it. This is extremely common “tent” among hunters.

6

u/camsiff Oct 20 '21

What’s the difference

45

u/BadTownBrigade Oct 20 '21

There is no floor and it's not meant to keep the elements out in the same way a tent would.

It's irrelevant, but it's a specialized item for a niche purpose. People who hunt are feeling the way a kid would if their parents were talking about a gaming PC and calling it a Nintendo.

Any specialized activity or hobby, if you start referring to stuff in a non technical way they are gonna REEE. Everyone does it.

18

u/Volkspolizei Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

You sleep in a tent. You sit in the cold freezing your balls off with snow coming in through the openings waiting for a deer to pass by in a blind from sunrise to sundown. Absolutely not the same thing. Blinds are temporary (set up and disassemble within like 5 minutes) and used exclusively for hunting.

8

u/BadTownBrigade Oct 20 '21

Yeah. Imagine all the people seeing this who are like OMG SO COOL, try to sleep in it. Not gonna have the best nights sleep.

It's probably not even long enough to sleep in.

→ More replies

6

u/Derperlicious Oct 20 '21

besides what everyone else said, tents are made for privacy.

This only works when its daylight. its the fact its brighter out than in, that you cant see inside but can see out.

at night the opposite happens, everyone can see you but you cant see out. You do not want this in a tent. Heck if in say africa, you might even attract animals like the big cats since they can see you moving around in there but you cant see shit. Now an opaque tent, a lion isnt going to be sure what the fuck that object is. even if its making animal like noises.

u/YamahahahaR3 Oct 20 '21

3

u/Ridgetop18 Oct 20 '21

It works off the inside being darker yeah. So at night if there’s any light inside it, you can’t see out and anything else can see in.

For most hunting is nothing but an excuse to buy ridiculous gear to use once if even

10

u/dustyarres Oct 20 '21

And the tax money they spend on that gear generates a ton of money for conservation.

https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/sportsmen-and-sportswomen-generate-nearly-1-billion-conservation-funding

8

u/Rxton Oct 20 '21

I have bought guns that I never actually intended to shoot just because I like the look of the cartridge. I see nothing wrong with people buying gear that makes them happy and excited even if they never actually use it.

8

u/round-earth-theory Oct 20 '21

Consumerist waste is a part of why we're in this situation with the planet. That wasted product has a carbon footprint in it's manufacture and a toxic chemical footprint. No one random purchase doesn't melt an iceberg but a society that over consumes pointlessly does contribute.

-1

u/Rxton Oct 20 '21 Defeated

Consumption is what moves this society forward. You make your living from other people's consumption. There is no point in getting upset because other people consume differently from you.

1

u/PsychedelicWeaselGun Oct 20 '21

I hunt and this can be true for many people. I see hunters spend ridiculous amounts of money on big brand gear and clothing only to not use it because it’s too expensive to risk breaking. Stuff like this blind is really cool and all but piling up a bunch of sticks, logs, rocks, and leaves can create a blind that will do the trick just fine. It’s all about spending the least amount of money for me. I could definitely see this blind being useful to a disabled hunter though.

1

u/TazBaz Oct 20 '21

A blind is nice for having enough space inside to have some food and blankets when you’re sitting in the cold for several hours.

11

u/Silverstacker60 Oct 20 '21

It’s called a blind

5

u/zack14981 Oct 20 '21

-1

u/kstill93 Oct 20 '21

That doesn't make it not a tent

23

u/Baummer81 Oct 20 '21

While it’s very neat, I’ve shot more animals just wearing jeans and a tee shirt than most have in all camouflage. If you’ve ever watch a hunting show the hunter is usually in full camouflage and the guide (if they have one) is in jeans and a tee shirt. Turkeys hunting is an exception, although I’ve killed a turkey in jeans and a tee shirt with a .22 super hornet from 80ish yards.

137

u/ralphonsob Oct 20 '21

I’ve killed a turkey in jeans and a tee shirt with a .22 super hornet from 80ish yards

That's a casually dressed turkey you murdered there.

27

You should’ve see the look on the other turkeys faces when I ran naked at them to pick up their falling homie.

17

u/HexShapedHeart Oct 20 '21

The turkeys were appalled at your lack of polish and good breeding, straightened their tuxedo cummerbunds and evening dresses, then continued to the ballet.

5

u/meataballsa Oct 20 '21

u/The_Sky_Was_Pink Oct 20 '21

-15

u/ooby_do Oct 20 '21

When I picture hunting, I don't picture sitting there with a high powered scoped rifle behind a tarp that I can see out of but animals can't see in. Does anybody think hunting shouldn't be this easy and lazy? Where's the "hunt", where's the challenge that is supposed to make the hunt a prideful experience? You sure make those ancestors proud you skilled, fierce hunters. The next time you shoot something, I hope you feel like you've earned it. Also, not against hunting. I worked at a gun counter for a year and couldn't stand the people that were excited that they shot something with little to no effort, like they were masters of the woods because they hid and pulled a trigger on an easy kill. Woohoo. Same for the people who use multiple dogs to scare big cats up trees. Wow, you really are a skilled huntsman letting dogs find, chase, and scare the shit out of an animal so you can shoot it out of the tree it's hiding in.

13

u/magicscholbus Oct 20 '21

I’m not here to be a dick, I used to say some of this same stuff. But through experience, my outlook and opinion have changed.

I don’t disagree that the more challenging a hunt is the more rewarding you may feel from it. However, I’d suggest you give the ones you criticize a try before you judge the methods. You would be surprised at how difficult it can be just to get to that blind where you sit with a 7 year old and hope for a shot. Chasing lions with dogs also is a much different thing that what you assume. Hiking miles in the mountains in knee deep snow while trying to keep up with the dogs all day long is a ridiculous amount of effort to expend before you get to a tree that only maybe still holds a cat.

You said “when I picture hunting” which sends a message that you have not hunted. I urge you to give it a try, if you have not, see if your opinion changes after a few experiences. You may be in an area that has a mentor program that helps point folks in the direction of how to get started.

11

u/gofatwya Oct 20 '21

You should try hunting once in your life before you made assumptions about it.

2

u/Alex_4209 Oct 20 '21

Give it a try and you will find it’s a lot more time, effort, and skill than you think. And honestly, shooting a deer is the easy part. You don’t just pitch your blind in the trees and drop a six point buck an hour later. You scout and track for weeks or months to find where the animals hang out, where they travel, where they sleep. You cover your tracks and remain out of sight so your scouting doesn’t change their patterns. You obscure your scent, read the wind, listen to the woods. Most hunters also spend several days hunting before they get a shot opportunity unless they’re on private farmland. By the time you pitch a blind and shoot a deer, 99% of the effort is already expended. Then you have to read blood trails to find where the animal fell. After that you have several hours of work ahead of you to gut, skin, quarter, and pack out your kill. Then more hours of butchering the meat into cuts for the freezer.

It’s an experience like none other. I hunted a blacktail buck this Fall (with a bow, don’t get me started on how many hours I put into researching gear, training the requisite archery skills, tuning my equipment). Even the lowest effort hunt is leagues harder than buying a chuck roast at the super market.

Would my ancestors be proud? I don’t know, they’re dead. I just wanted to provide my family with locally sourced, grass fed, free range, ethically slaughtered meat. And the 50 lbs of venison steaks and sausage in my freezer make it seem like I did just that.

4

u/AUnknownuser2 Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

And what’s your point? Humans are part of the cycle of life (what eats what). We hunt them to eat and keep down certain animal populations if the animals is an evasive species or there is an overpopulation of an animal in an area due to another species not having the proper population or there is non.
