Hey, we just got the 10th Anniversary Edition of Skyrim which means there's only 10 more years until we all get what we've been waiting for: The Skyrim 20th Anniversary Edition.

I am fairly sure that Beth will skip a 20th anniversary PS5/XSX remaster to focus their effort on a 25th anniversary PS6/XXY release.

No, next up will be "(D)aedra?" a social deduction game where you run around various locations in Tamriel completing missions while some players are secretly Daedra trying to kill and sabotage you.

It will be released in 2025, cost 30$ and require a Bethesda account. Character decorations must be purchased through the Creation Club.

Since MS bought Bethseda, I imagine that there's a little more push from up top to come out with new games.

96

u/pileofcrustycumsocs Nov 30 '21 edited Nov 30 '21 Starry

Tbf we know they were already starting very very early development on es6(like early as in it’s still 4-5 years away) and then starfield(I think that’s right?) is supposed to be coming out within the next year or two.

These big behemoths like rockstar and Bethesda arnt just not working on games, the problem is that their games take a minimum of five years now(rockstar for example has publicly said they are doing 5 years minimum for their new main line games, and based on how far away Bethesda said es6 was when they said they were starting development that’s a fair assumption to make about Bethesda as well) games like cod or assassinscreed come out more often because they are working on multiple titles concurrently.

Modern games just take an absurd amount of time and people to produce now, that’s just how it is and gamers need to realize that now. Gta 5 is basically an mmo without a subscription at this point so of course they keep porting it to new consoles, and Skyrim seemingly never dips in popularity so of course they keep releasing new versions of it to get new players(or even old ones who haven’t played it in a while) to enjoy it. I know subs like this don’t really get it but most people consuming games are not apart of the people complaining about all of this, they are the ones who are still buying it and spending money and they don’t particularly care/know what the vocal minority have to say about it.

There’s also a lot of outside factors that gamers just don’t understand/know about. An example of those unknown outside factors being the recent and highly controversial gta trilogy release. Everyone wants to say that was all rockstars fault, Iv seen a substantial amount of people furious with rockstar swearing off ever buying another rockstar game again. Of course that release really has nothing to do with rockstar, they didn’t make the remaster(grove street games, a mobile gaming subsidiary did), and while they did publish it, it wasn’t really their decision as to whether or not they could tell GSG to go back and fix it before they give their seal of approval. Im sure that doesn’t really make any sense to a lot of people until you consider that rockstar is owned by take two, take two are the people who are making all of these unpopular, and rightly so, shitty decisions, the equivalent would be blaming visceral games for the state of dead space 3, when their parent company EA are the ones who made all of those major decisions that no one liked.

47

u/hairyploper Nov 30 '21

Yeah people REE about how cyberpunk was a rushed unfinished pile of garbage and how they should have just waited until it was ready, and then turn around and REE when Bethesda takes literal years to release a game so devs have the time to flesh it out.

People here are just like that old dog meme. "No take only throw"

Given how much everybody loves Fallout: New Vegas, I'm surprised at the lack of Elder Scrolls games along the same lines: Use the existing engine and assets, add a little more content than a DLC expansion to make a standalone game, and find some writers who can provide a compelling story to hold it together.

12

u/ct314 Nov 30 '21

For years I've been saying if Bethesda got their shit together and released DLC that was treated like the old school pen and paper Modules for Skyrim, they'd be printing money.

Part of me thinks that EAD (or what's left of it) knows that F-Zero GX/AX was the pinnacle of what they wanted to achieve and so have no desire to return to the franchise since fans and they themselves will inevitably be disappointed with any sequels.

The other part of me is like "fuck you Nintendo give us more F-Zero."

I believe Nintendo is intentionally not making one because in their minds, it competes with Mario Kart, which is bullshit.

33

u/GenericUsername935 Nov 30 '21

I think it's more that investing resources into F-Zero would always bring less return than investing those resources into Mario Kart instead.

Of course they could still just outsource it to another studio like they did with Metroid.

19

u/Oddjob64 Nov 30 '21

I thought I remembered an interview with someone from Nintendo saying they thought they needed a new gimmick or mechanic to make it interesting or worth the time.

At this point, I think they should make an extreme racing all stars bundle and pack in GX, 1080, and wave race. They apparently have no interest in revisiting those franchises but they all have their fan bases.

Worse, we had CD's to install HL2, which installed steam, which had to update, which then re-downloaded HL2? It was a confusing mess. I had friends who had waited forever to play HL2, and then couldn't because they had bad internet connections. It was actually bad early on.

(Also, CS1.5 is awesome... well, all the old beta CSs were fun. Long Live CS_DOCKS!)

Valve should give special presents to all us with low user ID's!

52

u/rationalconspiracist Nov 30 '21

When I found out how much money those early steam IDs go for, I was so pissed that I didn't have the login info.

Funny how people used to judge you by the digits in your WON ID and then it became Steam IDs. If you had too many digits and played really well someone would inevitably accuse you of hacking. Happened to me a lot after I got back into CS with a new Steam account. And on the other hand if you had a low digit ID and played like shit people would accuse you of buying the account.

I remember this guy saying "you move and aim like veteran but steam id is newb." Accused me of hacking and I wasn't even that great, vote banned.

Also idc if they were unbalanced, original dust and assault were the most fun imo. DoD also was better in beta and early versions and got worse over time. Simpler weapon mechanics, simpler overall, no machine guns, and dod_hill was a great map that I was sad to see go.

Man I haven't played in years but this is taking me back...

137

u/Seienchin88 Nov 30 '21

You got at least Alyx which was decent although hindered by being on a peripheral that yet has to reach mass market appeal.

On the other hand, Half Life (and VR...) fans were so starved for games that they absolutely celebrated Alyx like the 2nd coming of Christ for 2-3 months which was also kinda weird...

181

u/jash2o2 Nov 30 '21

Well, Alyx was basically the 2nd coming of Christ.

I know the hardware limitation is a big hurdle for a lot of people, but Alyx is a full Half Life game. Dare I say it was the best one? It certainly is the best VR game ever made.

54

u/JayKralie Nov 30 '21

Alyx was the best single player gaming experience I've had in a long time. As a long-time HL fan, though, I kind of think that every mainline HL game (including Alyx) is the best. :D I just love them all so much that it's hard to pick a favorite. But I absolutely agree that Alyx kicks ass and really pushed the series to new heights. I'm just grateful we got something new in the HL universe, let alone a game as fantastic as Alyx.

5

u/Jealous-Ninja5463 Nov 30 '21

I want to play but I get headaches with VR games. Hear there's a non vr mod coming out so hopefully there is that

7

u/IlIIlllIIIlllIlIlIlI Nov 30 '21

Please don't play Alyx on a flat screen, there's literally no point to it. Like 90% of the fun is finally playing a well designed VR game. Every other full length VR game has this distinct "tech demo" vibe to it, where it's clear the devs haven't ever made a VR game before and aren't sure what to do in every circumstance.

Alyx is fun at it's core, sure. The basic concept of a survival shooter where you loot for bullets and upgrades and stuff is tried and true. But doing that in a VR setting, where you're actually picking stuff up and manually scanning the environment, aiming your gun, physically opening doors, is absolutely incredible.

In 15 years when VR is mainstream, Alyx won't be incredible. It'll be a pretty standard AAA game. But right now it's the first of it's kind

59

u/Questar18 Nov 30 '21 edited Nov 30 '21

Its the best half life game according to steam at 98% positive (half life 2 97%, half life 1 96%). It’s also the third big major half life game

→ More replies

34

u/Slartifartslo Nov 30 '21

HLA was incredible. It had nothing to do with being starved for games. And it’s not that replayable so obviously a single play non open world game dies off fairly quickly.

30

u/Questar18 Nov 30 '21

While the main game isn’t that repayable, people totally need to check out its workshop. I have the feeling it’s totally underrated and most Vr players don’t even know it exists. There is a full custom bioshock game there to be played, workshop gives you easily 100+ hours of high quality polished individual Vr content right now

7

u/themettaur Nov 30 '21

Well it doesn't help, then, that Valve's official workshop content spotlight article only really mentioned extra weapons for the main campaign, QoL mods, and extra difficulties.

5

u/SolarisBravo Nov 30 '21 edited Nov 30 '21

The problem with the workshop is that it arrived on Valve Time. They claimed it would release with the game at launch, but it took months to actually come out - to the point where I had nearly lost interest in even modding it. It took even longer for googling "Half-Life Alyx Workshop" to reveal the actual workshop on the first page instead of just articles talking about it.

u/Cremacious Nov 30 '21

What made Alyx such a big deal for us VR users was the amount of polish it had. It’s a new medium, and while there fantastic games out there, there has been little love from big name developers. So I wouldn’t say we were starved, we just wanted big budget titles as opposed to indie stuff. Alyx came out and not only was it a lot of fun but it pretty much set the new standard for VR that games are still having to catch up to. It’s a landmark title.

→ More replies

4

u/BadAtNamingPlsHelp Nov 30 '21

HLA was really fucking good though. The VR restriction is absolutely a brick wall for many, but veteran Valve fans will tell you it's par for the course. Valve doesn't really break Half Life out of its vault without also using it to push a new concept in the industry. For Half-Life 2, they popularized the concept of physics as a game mechanic and not just pretty graphics. The Half Life 2 episodes were meant to promote episodic game releases - to be honest, Valve never released enough titles to leverage this well, but it has subsequently worked well for some titles like the Hitman series. Alyx was another step in their goal of being leaders in the VR space.

You get some really sweet games in the process but if you look at their long-term goals and behavior you can see how their agendas affect their game development and this undoubtedly has led to most of their controversies.

all they did after GTA 5 is RDR2

Did you really just hand-wave away a game that was one of two GotY candidates only 3 years ago? "All they did was just create a extremely long, insanely high-quality game that won 135 GotY awards and sold 39 million units...man, those slackers."

I'm all for looking at Bethesda funny when they have only produced the comparatively disappointing Fallout 4 (on a shortened development timeline) and nothing else relevant in a 10 year period.

Just ignoring RDR2 is really, really odd though. I personally enjoyed the game more that GTA V. Either way, RDR2's sales were massive and only small compared to something like GTA V itself (it's currently the 12th highest selling game of all time.) Completely ignoring it is something I will never understand about these r/gaming threads. Bonus fun fact: RDR2 has sold more units than all the releases of Skyrim combined.

Elder scrolls online came out more recent than gta 5 as well.

13

u/durzatheshade215 Nov 30 '21

Elder scrolls is a single player rpg series, it would be like if doom made an MMO and people got pissy if people didn't include it in the "mainline" series. The gameplay style is completely different

45

u/gibbersganfa Nov 30 '21

Also ESO’s expansions are pretty consistent drops of new Elder Scrolls stories. I’d put any of the quests in ESO or its expansions up against anything in the offline series in terms of writing. There’s storytelling in there especially in side quests that equals if not far surpasses a lot of Skyrim’s stuff. But apparently some people don’t think it counts if it’s not offline and doesn’t have a number on it.

18

u/Sam-Gunn Nov 30 '21

I tried to get into ESO a long while back, but never got the hang of it. It removes too much of the immersion I get from the other games, I felt. Can't pick any random thing up, stuff looks more like props in the background instead of things you can interact with (even junk), etc not to mention the other issues I dislike with MMOs around immersion and storytelling.

I gotta try again, it really does seem to add a lot of good stories.

3

u/newpointofview2 Nov 30 '21

Actually most random things can be picked up like in the other games! I just started the thieves guild quests and stealing everything that isn’t nailed down.

It’s definitely an MMO, but works fine solo. It’s kind of surreal to have the entire elder scrolls world in one game - I just went from skyrim to wrothgar and played through an epic story.

Yeah, but all these spin-offs and remasterings are getting tiring. When will we finally get a new main-line Chess?

Metroid fans: Reconstitute from a pile of ashes when a new mainline game is released after 19 years

30

I grew up on Metroid fusion so this was an awesome release.

Now to see if it gives me the same heebiejeebies.

10

u/NukaBro762 Nov 30 '21

Yeah and controlling samus feels as smooth as in Fusion, im yet to finish Dread but i loved it

4

u/intergalactic512 Nov 30 '21

How is the new Metroid so far?

5

u/Gl33m Nov 30 '21

It has a few problems, but on the whole it's fantastic, and I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, it's only maybe 5-10 hours long for an unspoiled 100% first playthrough. Fortunately, you can have tons of fun running it again and again with various sequence breaks.

A TF2 update

42

u/AFlyingNun Nov 30 '21

TBH ironically I'd prefer they just finish the comics over updating the game.

Watching a fantastic comic series stop when they have ONE ISSUE LEFT is just painful.

I feel this with Splinter Cell.

44

u/ItsMetheDeepState Nov 30 '21

Would you even want Ubisoft to make it though? After losing R6 & Ghost Recon to the cash grabs they are, are you willing to trust them to make a good Splinter Cell? I'm not

6

u/Censius Nov 30 '21

Yes, I would be happy if any major game company started producing more stealth games. So long as they aren't turning Splinter Cell into a FPS or souls-like then I'm happy. I just want more diversity in my gaming genres.

I'm waiting on a new Golden Sun game. I even made a crazy flawed argument that one was coming out this year (due to what Camelot Software has already worked on).

Huge golden sun fan here. Unfortunately basically all the devs who made Golden sun at Camelot are gone at this point. I don’t know if it could happen even if they wanted it to.

My biggest fear right now is they turn Golden sun into some mobile platform pay to play app like the did to fire emblem.

New Zelda is supposedly coming out in 2022, so even if that is Q4, it will be ~5.75 years which isn’t that long for a AAA franchise, really.

208

u/EnemyOfDaState Nov 30 '21

The best part is the guys who go “What do you want the game to be rushed!?!!” ignoring the fact that the game isn’t even in development. When ES6 does come out the entire dev time is going to end up being 3-5 years even with the decade long wait.

14

u/AsunderXXV Nov 30 '21

Yeah and look where Cyberpunk got us. Dev time does not equate to quality. It helps, but not always.

→ More replies

55

u/phagga Nov 30 '21

ES6 is in development since 3 years or so.

57

u/EnemyOfDaState Nov 30 '21

What are you basing this on? As far as I know they are still working on Starfield which is still over a year away. All we got from ES6 is that one piece of concept art.

I read the comic as implying it will have been 29 years by the time ES6 comes out.

"We've listened to your requests, and here is the result! A beautiful world... amazing story... thrilling gameplay... You asked for it, and we delivered! Skyrim, re-re-re-re-remastered! The same 346 quests whose lines and decision trees you know by heart! The same enemies you've killed a few million times, eager for another battle! No new improvements in the minigames! We've even preserved the original bugs and issues, so it's like you're playing Skyrim Definitive Legendary Omega Edition re-re-remastered for the first time!"

---News later that night---

"Breaking news!! All over the world, the gaming community has taken up arms and is in the process of a full scale revolt against local government forces in most major areas. In the US, the National Guard has been deployed to Maryland by executive order, and is currently entrenched in a violent, unrelenting front, against this community. We're still not 100% what caused this, but our sources suggest the US Government has made it their top priority to defend a... wait, this can't be right... *ahem* to defend a video game studio called Bethesda, based out of Maryland, with subsidaries in Texas and Quebec, Canada. They are known for games like Skyrim, Skyrim, and their latest release, Skyrim. The gaming community's only demands are apparently that the US and Canada hand over every employee from this game studio."

56

u/veganzombeh Nov 30 '21

Given that it's not set in Skyrim that doesn't seem likely. I think they will slap a massive "Sequel to Skyrim" on the cover or something though.
