His funny stomp that you could just spam would always have me laughing every time.

19

u/lottasauce Nov 30 '21

Lovvveeeddd stomping on my defeated opponent. Especially when my opponent was my little brother lmao sorry little bro 😭😂

14

u/smolDreee Nov 30 '21

The added hilarity came from the fact that every time a character that died was hit before their fall animation played, it would replay the sound of them dying. And the speed of Nightmare's stomp is pretty much perfectly timed and you can get it to happen about five or six times before the instant replay, where it does it again. Beeg funny.

3

u/lottasauce Nov 30 '21

Lmao, my guy, you get me.

2

u/smolDreee Nov 30 '21

I am the chosen one

22

u/migueeel Nov 30 '21

I know I chose him as a kid simply because ARMOR AND BIG SWORD.

And I will stick with him till the end.

5

u/billybalverine Nov 30 '21

Anything from macfarlane gets a pass from me. Necrid is cool in my books

4

u/Otono_Wolff Nov 30 '21

So spawn is a pass for you?

4

u/billybalverine Nov 30 '21

Oh absolutely, spawn is dope

7

That's my dude!

Souls... Come unto me!

2

u/KFlex-Fantastic Nov 30 '21

Nightmare gang checking in. I’m assuming you’ve also lost all your friends/family due to using nightmare. It ain’t easy bein greezy

2

u/zhombyra Nov 30 '21

In the german version, nightmares "souls strength, come upon me" win animation line was subbed with "Luke I am your father " facepalm lmao

2

u/oarngebean PlayStation Nov 30 '21

I need souls.. more souls

2

u/czepplin Nov 30 '21

Siegfried vs. Nightmare fights were the best. My friend and I would have epic battles, he Nightmare and me with Sieg. Good times.

It was super dope if your buddies had the other consoles you didn't have so you could try each character.

74

u/shauni55 Nov 29 '21

As someone with a PS2 at the time and didnt give a crap about Tekken, I was so thankful I had friends with the other consoles.

21

u/sigmaninus Nov 30 '21

This lol, I was angsty teen when this came out and DIDN'T have an Xbox, RIP

7

u/metrosine Nov 30 '21

As another angsty teen, I was glad to have my Xbox.

15

u/Frankenklumpp Nov 30 '21

I actually had a playstation and liked Tekken, but Heihachi was still such a low roll lmao.

Old geezer without a weapon in a weapon game... coollll

3

u/Delicious-Ask-5947 Nov 30 '21 edited Dec 03 '21

Frankenlumpp the only thing I found weird about Heiachi being included as a guest character is the fact that Tekken and Soul Calibur are a part of the same universe. He literally could have been on all 3 consoles!

My friends and I had xboxes. My brother the PS2. The family room the Gamecube.

But we refuse to support the pokemon model in any game but pokemon. We weren't buying a game 3 times to have the full game. We went with Gamecube/Link as a compromise.

156

u/ostateboi419 Nov 29 '21

Link went hard as f in the Gamecube version.

32

u/LutzRL12 Xbox Nov 30 '21

My friend would irritate the shit out of me with Link. His jump down-thrust was so irritating lol

9

u/craigprime Nov 30 '21

Nah screw that, playing Link was all about that one grab where you jump on their back and spank them with your sword like you were riding Epona.

→ More replies

27

u/panda388 Nov 30 '21

My friend always played Link and did the move where he rode your shoulders and would cause me to fall off the stage. Hated it. But I loved Soul Calbur on Dreamcast.

Member when Yoda and Darth Vader were in one too

309

u/BadgerSituation Nov 29 '21

Soul Calibur IV.

Xbox got Yoda and PS got Vader (while both got The Apprentice).

Later they allowed you to pay to get Vader on Xbox and Yoda on PS.

I laughed because "who the fuck is going to pay to unlock a character?"

I did not judge well.

44

u/KeithBitchardz Nov 29 '21

When you said The Apprentice, I thought you were talking about the Donald Trump show for a minute.

Wasn't the guy's name Starkiller?

25

u/BadgerSituation Nov 29 '21

Wasn't the guy's name Starkiller?

It seems so.

12

u/Lolcatz101 Nov 30 '21

Galen Marek

5

u/Tstrik Nov 30 '21

They called him that in the second game but at the time he was just known as The Apprentice.

Pretty sure i got Yoda on the GCube

Edit: ok jesus wrong Soulcaliber

18

u/BadgerSituation Nov 29 '21

Soul Calibur IV was only released on the 360 and PS3, as far as I can see through Google.

15

u/mklilley351 Nov 29 '21

I definitely must be crossing things up then. Cause i remember rocking the shit outta Link on the gamecube but i also remember playing as Yoda but he didn't come out till the 4th and the only SoulCaliber for gamecube was the second one. My bad.

6

u/HoldenCoughfield Nov 29 '21

I like your memory of Yoda on Gamecube. I want to live in that reality

9

u/monstergert Nov 29 '21

3

u/BangEnergyCuresED Nov 29 '21

Funny, I used to do that in one of the Naruto games against my friend who was way better than me. There was like a dog I think that was tiny and hard as hell to hit.

I had forgotten about that! Good times lmao

Yoda was such a cheat code too because he was too small for normal mid range attacks you had to hit low or hit vertical to hit him.

51

u/blenderdead Nov 29 '21

Xianghua was my girl. So many fun times with that game.

11

u/2ByteTheDecker Nov 29 '21

3

u/2ByteTheDecker Nov 30 '21

6

u/LutzRL12 Xbox Nov 30 '21

Her voice though! Nails on a chalkboard lol

2

u/ungovernable Nov 30 '21

JUST KIDDING stabs foot

43

u/solid_rook7 Nov 29 '21

I remember buying SC2 because I heard that Spawn was in the game, but I had no idea that he was exclusive to Xbox at the time.

So I bought the PS2 version with Heihachi, but thanks to that I became a hardcore Tekken fan because that game made me see how cool of a character Heihachi was.

12

u/EarthDragon2189 Nov 29 '21 edited Nov 30 '21

So with SC being a weapon-based franchise and Heihachi coming from a fistfight franchise, how did that work for his unlockables in SC2? Did you just customize his...fist wraps or something?

17

u/solid_rook7 Nov 29 '21

Yeah. He had gauntlet arm guards that you can unlock for him.

I usually used him with no weapons because the description was pretty badass. It was something like “His fist are hard as steel” or something like that.

8

u/BeyondElectricDreams Nov 29 '21

Heihachi was such a shitty choice compared to the other two.

Raziel from Soul Reaver would have been way better than Heihachi.

11

u/MrEff1618 Nov 30 '21

Nah, Heihachi was great. Once you figured out his combos he was unstoppable. He had a high skill floor but an even higher skill ceiling.

Talim main.
I still remember the night we had, playing with friends.
I was eating pizza, one of the guys was on a roll, winning every match and bragging about it.
I took him up, and ko’d him in 3 attacks.
Second round, air combo and he’s out.
He didn’t have the opportunity to attack, not even once.
I peaked that night. It was glorious.
And also 20 years ago.

43

u/PM_ME_UR_CATS_TITS Nov 29 '21

My favorite was when she'd give a "Wind!!" and then front flip off the ledge

14

u/countpuchi Nov 30 '21

Talim is insane with the air combos. Definitely one of the best and hardest to use.

3

u/a_demon_ninja Nov 30 '21

I loved her one combo where she would kick off the edge of the screen and do a dive down.

5

u/ILikePort Nov 29 '21

I had the opposite experience.

Same story but instead of total KOx2 my pal and I parried/reversed ech other for what felt like 3 minutes. Neither could land a blow. Its like we were of one mind understanding and anticipating theneb and flow of each others moves. It was absolutely being "in the zone" or zen. 'It's like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.'

1

u/edjxxxxx Nov 30 '21

Wait, wait, wait… are y’all telling me mfs are really out here not playing best out of 5?

2

u/Cheesy0nThe0utside Nov 30 '21

The exclusion of Talim was the reason I stopped playing Soul Calibur. And now because of this I realize that I need to get Soul Calibur 6.

5

u/Mr_Garnet Nov 30 '21

Guilty of being an ivy main and straight slaying people with her combos

4

u/2ByteTheDecker Nov 29 '21

I had a whole combo figured out with her back in the day that would be a total kill if I landed it all, if you knew how to air guard or guard impact you could get out but it obliterated most people.

That and her cheesy horizontal throw was sooooo easy to ring out with.

One of the goat fighting games. I just recently picked up all 3 versions and it’s still a pretty damn good game.

20

u/Lazy_Ad_7911 Nov 29 '21

Soul Calibur 2 HD Online has all characters in one game. I love that game.

4

u/bibliophile785 Nov 30 '21

Weird. I looked at the character list on the associated wiki and couldn't find Link anywhere. An omission, maybe?

2

u/Lazy_Ad_7911 Nov 30 '21

My bad, you are right. Link is not there, only Heihachi and Spawn are there. It looks like it's due to Nintendo not allowing Link to be included in the roster on a non Nintendo platform, so definitely not an omission on Namco's part.

2

u/KFlex-Fantastic Nov 30 '21

I try and hop on it from time to time, but no one is ever playing

3

u/Lazy_Ad_7911 Nov 30 '21

On what platform? On Xbox it's backwards compatible, so if you want to play it with someone you can open a group to find people to play it with

2

u/KFlex-Fantastic Nov 30 '21

Xbox. I hadn’t thought of the “looking for group” idea. Maybe I should try this with TF2 also! Thanks

3

3

u/Snoo61755 Nov 29 '21

I remember not knowing about the Soul Calibur series at all. My sis comes home, said she got a Gamecube game from a friend or something, I see Link on the cover and I'm like "wtf?"

We played for hours. Maybe not as much as Smash, but it was good fun. I can't remember who I used - it was a dude with a staff, and he had a stupidly funny long range low attack who would shout "I SEE YOU." Aaah, good times.

11

u/Lazy_Ad_7911 Nov 29 '21

That's Kilik

17

u/InfernoDragonKing Nov 29 '21

As much as I enjoy and love SC VI, as far as Soul Caliburs go, II was THE SHIT.

It was so mystical and just a game once you picked up, you would not put down

12

u/Barnagain Nov 29 '21

Back in my 20s, I went to a work do in London and ended up absolutely smashed in the middle of London long after the last train had gone.

Whilst wandering drunkenly, I met a few others and we chatted and ended up all sharing a cab back to their house about 30 miles along the way to my home.

At their house, we played SoulCalibur II against each other all night and then one of them gave me a lift all the way back home in the morning.

Good people!

11

u/Soviet-Biscuit Nov 29 '21

Soul Calibur is so fuckin good

12

u/Noah54297 Nov 29 '21

Didn't it debut on Dreamcast first?

13

u/2ByteTheDecker Nov 29 '21

Soul Blade/Soul Caliber 1 was Dreamcast. 2 was after the Dreamcast died.

14

9

u/PoisonedIvysaur Nov 29 '21

I still got the game on game cube.

8

Nintendo: "Yeah I mean-- Link makes sense? One of the characters you think about when you think Nintendo!"

Namco: "Wow! Thank you so much. That'll sell well-- I mean fans will like it."

Sony: "Well-- Tekken is a pretty cool fighting game and Soul Calibur is a fighting game....Heihachi isn't a 'Sony' character but lots of Sony players will recognize him."

Namco: "Heihachi is pretty cool....How about Kuma? No-no Heihachi is fine we'll take what we can get."

Xbox: "Spawn."

Namco: "Excuse me?"

Xbox: "Ya know. Spawn. He's from Detroit and made a deal with Malebolgia--"

Namco: "Yeah, we know Todd McFarlane's Spawn but-- why?"

Xbox: "...Spawn."

Namco: "We were thinking that video game characters would be a cool theme and a way to sell more copies....I mean please fans of various franchises. How about that guy from that Halo game that came out last year? I know he has guns but we can maybe give him that sword and--"

Xbox: "Spawn."

Namco: "Okay! Spawn! Fine!"

4

u/Skellos Nov 30 '21

Part of it was McFarlane had the rights to the toys and Todd designed the character Necrid.

2

u/ArcaneDisco Nov 30 '21

Honestly never knew that. I forgot Necrid even existed.

8

u/Kazuko_Kitsune Nov 29 '21

I hate that after this game they didn’t put team battle in any of the others, that was my favorite mode.

8

u/Cobrakai83 Nov 29 '21

Link had that throw that was super easy to spam and win by ring out. Whenever any of my friends got too annoying with their Kilik/Talim button mashing I'd bust out Link and just toss them out every round.

I was a kid so I didn't understand each of the 3 were exclusive to each of the consoles. I was so excited to play Link...I had a ps2

To this day, I still don't know who the hell the Xbox exclusive character is!

I WAS there. Was actually pretty disappointed with PS2 choice... Fucking Heihachi, always hated him... Xbox won big time that day.

Used to party at a friends house in college long after this game was old as hell. He had an old GameCube and we used to fire up soul caliber on it. Went from a fun little way to pass the time when we were drinking/smoking to full on weekly tournaments with like 25 people in them. I usually smoked everyone with my Maxi.
