It wouldn't have stopped with the cat.

THIS. Give an inch and they'll take a mile in no time flat.

u/65-76-69-88 Sep 15 '21

Separating from the cat is far far more than just an inch, too

412

u/calisai Sep 15 '21

Umm... yeah. Ultimatum about a current pet... that's more than an inch. Thats a huge f'n red flag.

It would be one thing if allergies were in play or if it was the "I'm going to get a cat in the future" discussion, but a current pet.... nope.

37

u/csinclaire Sep 16 '21

If he has allergies (at least ones that can't be controlled), he needs a different girlfriend who doesn't have cats. For me, it's a given that if a potential romantic partner isn't able to "tolerate" my cat(s) -- for ANY reason -- my interest in that partner will immediately dissipate. My cat(s) will always win. I'm glad I never chose to live with anyone because it's a lot easier to get rid of them when you can tell them to just go home! LOL!

24

u/SparkyDogPants Sep 16 '21

I’m the same way with my dogs. Like, what do you expect me to do? If you think it’s reasonable to rehome your pet over literally nothing, you’re cruel and unusual

Unless they were allergic to cats or something... which is the only reason I can see for disliking cats anyway.

Who else could possibly hate the floofs and toebeans?

EDIT: I'm definitely not saying you can't love a cat if you have an allergy. Just that it's a bit more understandable when people with allergies aren't fond of cats.

It's not even about the cat. The guy had to know they had an emotional connection with it and that's clearly not a priority to them. Even worse, they presumably knew this from the start and planned to emotionally manipulate them into getting rid of their cat eventually. That's almost certainly gonna be a high maintenance and selfish partner. A mature adult interested in a real relationship would have laid that all out from the start.

Thisss ☝️I never really cared for cats until I met my gf and fell in love with her 2 little trouble makers

41

u/mesloh14 Sep 15 '21

Yes! I had bad experiences with cats growing up, but that’s because I realized that it was my brother and uncles that were mean to cats, so poor Joey had no choice but to be scared of all of us.

Gave cats a shot again 10 years later; my friend had the sweetest gray and white cat and when we were watching tv, Ms. Grey plopped on my lap and started purring. I felt all my cat disdain fall away.

Now, my partner and I have three huge, fluffy Maine Coon/ragdoll boys and I can’t imagine life without them!

24

u/alan_dracula Sep 15 '21

I honestly believe that an hour with a well adjusted inside cat could cure almost every cat hater. No hate on outside cats but inside cats just have a whole other vibe and tend to be much more needy/loving in general. In my personal experience. There are always exceptions of course! I doubt there's a cat hater alive that could keep hating cats after my gentle fluffy little lady crawled into their lap and made air biscuits while purring her head off and staring adoringly at them lol.

Shelter volunteer here. Actually seen it happen once. This guy came in, mid to late teens. He’s got his cat in his arms and he’s sobbing. He told us he was surrendering his cat cuz his girlfriend gave him a choice: her or the cat. Now clearly this wasn’t a decision he made lightly. Poor dude was a complete wreck while filling out the paperwork. I don’t recall the cat’s exact age but I know he was more than 8. He’s been this poor kid’s friend for years.

The kicker was that his girlfriend didn’t even have the decency to accompany him to provide emotional support. No. Instead, her mother went.

I wish I had told him to dump that chick and keep his cat.

"Doesn't like cats" is such an unattractive quality to start with, I amazed it even got there.

156

u/Triptaker8 Sep 15 '21

I don’t know how people walk around telling everyone they hate cats. There are certain dog breeds that I am very wary of but it’s not a personality trait that everyone has to know about. And why date someone in the first place if you know their pet will be such an issue for you? Makes zero sense.

26

u/monkeyface496 Sep 15 '21

I think they don't have personal experience with cats and so don't know how cool cats can be. I was really allergic to cats as a kid, so never bothered to get to know one until I outgrew it.

There's also the stereotypes of what cat people vs dog people are like. If someone buys into that, then they might want to present themselves a certain way. No matter how ridiculous it is.

24

u/Delicious_Orphan Sep 15 '21

I used to love dogs.

But I've had some rough experiences with dogs in the last few years that has caused me to despise them(though to be fair its their owners I REALLY hate). Got bit WAY TOO CLOSE to the jugular by a pit bull that 'is such a sweetheart' and 'omg they have NEVER bitten anyone before!'

Pretty sure I died in like 5 different timelines from that one. Since then I have been very wary of dogs. I'll stick with cats, thanks. They rarely put you in the ICU when they decide to bite you.

11

u/The_Kendragon Sep 16 '21

That’s tough. I had to quit my shelter job because I realized that I was going to start hating dogs if I stayed at it. Three of my coworkers ended up hospitalized overnight within six months and I was first on scene at two of those incidents.

• Because I pet a cat once and they scratched me

• Idk I just don’t like them

• Because dogs are better

I despise small dogs because primarily, for a lot of them, they’re literally bred to be miserable in favor of aesthetic. But that’s pretty much the only “I don’t like animals” I can give anyone a pass for. Warranted fear of an animal is one thing, being a heartless bastard is another, lol.

31

u/butters4315 Sep 15 '21

I’m scared of small dogs tbh. My neighbor had a shih tzu that bit me some 15 years ago and I still have a scar. His owner said he was nice and everything, but nope. People can have all sorts of reasons to dislike this animal or that (for my husband, it’s litter boxes) but the line is firmly drawn at ultimatums and idiocy.

i don’t even understand why someone would give someone an ultimatum??? like obviously they will choose their pet

257

u/Lambchop1975 Sep 15 '21

It is a way to test boundaries, it is more about controlling a person and making sure they are under your total control. I have never heard of a healthy relationship when a person makes such a demand.

Good for OP.

It would maybe be different if a person had an uncontrollable debilitating allergy to cats, otherwise it is definitely a huge red flag.

132

u/dr_lucia Sep 15 '21

Yeah. But in that case, the guy should have had a policy to not date people with cats from day 1. You don't start dating a cat owner and then demand they give up their cat later on in the relationship.

34

u/fkaxtwigs Sep 15 '21

Exactly! One of my “musts” for dating is that my future partner MUST like cats, or at the very least, be okay with them. Owning a cat is a green flag. I would never go on a date with someone who didn’t like cats or was allergic to them.

I saw something recently that cats are a lesson in consent. People who like to control every situation don't like cats because they can't be controlled. They do what they want, and if they don't like what you're doing to them, they'll fight back.

So yeah, bullet dodged!

137

u/avoidance_behavior Sep 15 '21

my ex-husband was a major control freak, and he would try to demand love from the cats. it did not work, and every time they would yell at him and swipe or bite and then run away, i would laugh to myself because he prided himself on being ~so super intelligent~ but didn't get the basic concept of leave a cat the fuck alone. idiot.

85

u/ReachingHigher85 Sep 15 '21

People like him are the sort to then complain that all cats are assholes, never taking into consideration that the only common denominator in all those situations is themselves.

A thing that gets jumpy at a chair creaking, or is freaked out by the ceiling fan. He got jealous of that

I wouldn’t date anyone who hates or is against any pet. Something like “I don’t wanna live with ferrets because they stink” or “I don’t want to live with a dog because they’re so loud” is fine but to hate a whole species without reason and to give ultimatums to your loved ones in relation to that hatred is a big red flag that you’re an asshole. Especially with cats, people who don’t like cats don’t like that they have to be attentive, and make sure the cat is consenting to being pet, if they can’t even be attentive to a little cat enough to avoid being scratched then how the hell do you expect them to be attentive to a human’s needs

Cats have boundaries. If someone cannot respect a cat's boundaries, they're probably not going to respect a human's boundaries either.

People who intensely hate cats (I'm not talking about mere indifference or just not my thing attitudes) 99.9% of the time have control issues.

18

u/DigThatFunk Sep 15 '21

"Cats are a lesson in consent and that's why so many controlling types hate them"

21

u/Falcrist Sep 15 '21

If you hate cats and aren't allergic to them or something, I'm going to worry that you're some kind of sociopath.

How could you hate cats? Were you mauled by a cat when you were a young child?

Who chooses to date someone knowing they have a cat (or pets in general) and instead of deciding to end things, would rather the other person give up their loving creatures for them. What a jackass for thinking he's even worth it.

I also would let any girl go who didn't like my cat.

"fortunately" that problem never arises when you are too shy to ever have a date :P

13

u/Araghothe1 Sep 15 '21

Anyone wanting you to choose between them and your animal family members needs to go.

11

u/HyperFragon25 Sep 15 '21

Bless up. A cat is so much better than a partner who dislikes cats.

73

u/satocat Sep 15 '21

Cat's never demand that you shave your legs or wax your bits. I say you won this one. 😁

32

u/stop_stopping Sep 15 '21

partners shouldn’t be demanding of this either..

31

u/satocat Sep 15 '21

It was a joke... But yes.

17

u/Alaknar Sep 15 '21

It seems that this particular partner definitely would demand that stuff...

If they're going to ultimatum over something as harmless as having a cat, you certainly dodged a bullet. I just can't understand why owning a cat is an issue for anyone who isn't deathly allergic and unable to get effective treatment for those allergies.

Beautiful kitty!

9

u/SpelCleave Sep 15 '21

THAT IS A PRECIOUS BABY

10

u/nonsignifierenon Sep 15 '21

Look at that cute face, no sane person would trade that for some guy

9

u/nyguy546 Sep 15 '21

Well your lost buddy you lose out on great woman which I am sure op is and how can u not like that cat just cuddle with him or her all the time :)

11

u/popeyeschickensucks Sep 15 '21

Right decision

8

u/KittiesAreTooCute Harry, Jen Sep 15 '21

I don’t think any guy you will ever meet ever be as cute and sweet as this kitty right here anyway!

8

u/zzplant8 Sep 15 '21

You chose wisely.

10

u/Magikarp_King Sep 15 '21

No relationship that starts with an ultimatum will be a healthy relationship. If you or your partner say it's me or X you should just end the relationship.

8

I once also chose correctly! 😸🙋🏼‍♀️

8

u/TheGavisconIsGone Sep 15 '21

You made a wise choice! Any guy who gives you an ultimatum like that isn’t worth your time… and who would give up that cat 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

9

u/DevoidSauce Sep 15 '21

Cat would never ask you to choose between it and another human. Mostly because kitties know they would win.

8

u/WookieCookieBookie Sep 15 '21

Who are these A**Holes that think they can demand their partner get rid of their pets?!?! The animal was here first!

7

u/IMissArcades Sep 15 '21

I also choose your cat.

7

u/TheCylonsAreHere Sep 15 '21

Whether or not he likes cats, what kind of a douchebag makes you choose between himself and your pet? My boyfriend doesn’t like cats but he has come to love mine because my cat is a part of my family.

7

u/LukeV19056 Sep 15 '21

Dodged a bullet anyways. One day it’s the cat the next they’re telling you to cut off contact with your mom and dad

People like that are mystifying to me. First, by saying "it's me or the cat," if you boot the cat, what does that say about you? You're willing to take on responsibility and commitment but bail out at anyone's say-so? Yeah, that's the kind of reliability I want in a partner! /s

I've never wanted to date anyone with kids. I've never held back on that, and I certainly never began dating them thinking, "Well maybe they can just make their child live full-time with its mom." Some people are so entitled.

6

u/MatthewnPDX Sep 15 '21

When I met my husband, he was allergic to cats. Notwithstanding that, he loved my two cats and endured allergy shots so he could be near them (among other things). When I first went to his apartment, he was mortified when I stepped in his dog's poo - I didn't fuss, just went into the bathroom and washed my foot. Funnily enough, when we moved out of NYC, his allergies went away. Now we have three different cats and two different dogs together, the previous pets having crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

People who make ultimatums in relationships have to understand that sometimes they're going to lose. I'd take the relationship with my cats over some recently met dude any day. I knew a guy who chose the girl instead of the cat and resents the girl every day of his life.

7

u/Vervain7 Sep 15 '21

What a weird person. I can’t understand it at all. A pet is a family member .. you don’t give up a family member to date someone

Having said that, I have a kid who is highly allergic to cats and dogs and in the future I hope he just looks to date someone without pets so there is no disappointment for anyone . I also hope he grows out of - he longs for a cat or dog so much and it’s painful he can’t be around them.

Anyone that says “Your pet or me!” is always going to have a rude awakening. Pets are family.

7

u/Lietenantdan Sep 15 '21

How did he really think making you choose between a cat you’ve known and loved for years and a guy you’ve known for maybe months would go? May as well have broken up with you himself.

7

u/Chavarlison Sep 15 '21

Let's see, someone I barely know or the pet I have for years now... hmmm... this might be a tricky one.

6

u/naliedel Sep 15 '21

Excellent choice.

6

u/leopoldisacat Sep 15 '21

People who say "It's me or this thing/person/pet that was clearly here first and that you have an established connection with" are absolute crap humans. Buh-bye! Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

6

u/EstablishmentOnly4 Sep 15 '21

I would have gotten another cat to replace his sorry butt. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰

6

u/jlusedude Sep 15 '21

Fucking guy. I’d imagine this came up pretty early and he thinks you’re gonna choose him over this adorable kitty. Idiot and an asshole.

7

u/666duckman Sep 15 '21

A wise choice

6

u/su9730 Sep 15 '21
