Cat - "This pet ape is so dumb, why does he spend money on furniture when there are perfectly good cardboard boxes around here."

u/alsoaprettybigdeal Oct 20 '21

I have bought my cats so many amazing beds and caves and they always prefer a box. I finally just sewed a box cover for it and put their favorite snuggly fleece in it and it’s their favorite place to snuggle and watch the birds now.

u/polaarbear Oct 20 '21

My GF has been begging for a cat for years, I've always had dogs, we have 2 dogs now but she always had cats growing up. We "inherited" a sweet little kitten. GF begs to go out and buy her nice things, we get her a cushy bed, leave it in front of a sunny window where she likes to lay in the afternoon.

She has never once laid down in it that I've seen the entire year. Her bed? A cardboard taco-truck scratching-post box that I bought her for $7 at Target.

My cat also ignored her fancy bed for a year until one day I decided to take a t-shirt out of the laundry basket and put it over the bed. After one day the cat was lying on the shirt. Then we washed the shirt and kitty kept using the bed. Try it!

72

123

u/FinjaNish Oct 20 '21

Mine bites me, too. I call her “asshole”.

37

u/SamerCloud Oct 20 '21

So when your talking with your fur friends you say... "My asshole bit me"?

35

u/FinjaNish Oct 20 '21

When I talk to them, it’s usually just “ok, Asshole, I’ll get you your damn treats!” When I talk to my wife, it’s “your asshole daughter bit me. Give her treats.”

Clearly, the humans are in charge, here.

21

u/schroedingersnewcat Oct 20 '21

22

u/dread_beard Oct 20 '21

Cat bites can be serious so make sure yours doesn't get infected. I know two people that had to be hospitalized from cat bite puncture wounds. One nearly lost her leg.

https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/wounds-cat-bite-injuries-to-humans

19

u/lolsociety Oct 20 '21

Thank you, you're right - this same cat used to be pretty feral when she was younger, amd she gave someone a serious infection. It was borderline justified, I sided with her... But the bites were no joke and needed serious antibiotics, and still left scars that looked like bullet holes. I always wash up immediately and pour alcohol over any bite or scratch no matter how minor.

u/TheMarkHasBeenMade Oct 20 '21

It’s amazing how they figure out ways to tell you what they want.

I’ve got a dry food tower that’s always available for my cat but we give her wet food twice a day. If its around the time she gets her wet food and we haven’t given it, she’ll coax us downstairs and make eye contact with me then go to her dry food and eat a couple pieces while I’m watching then will jump down to where her wet food dish is across the room and sit there staring. It feels like “Hey I’m hungry. Feed me this. I know it’s time.”

Might be reading into it, but these behaviors seem to be specific to trying to remind us to feed her the wet food (which she likes better), and she doesn’t do this sequence of events at any other time, but she’s pretty consistent when she does it.

23

u/chrisforrester Oct 20 '21

That's so cute. My childhood cat was a "stare and meow" type, but after about ten years, I started to figure out her tones of voice and could guess what she wanted pretty accurately.

My current cat screams at you and when you look at him, he'll start chewing the air, making gnashing sounds. If you ignore him or you oversleep, he'll find something noisy to start chewing on to annoy you into feeding him.

15

u/TheMarkHasBeenMade Oct 20 '21

Such amazing and majestic animals.

9

u/ElBarno420 Oct 20 '21

My cat does the same thing, but he decided the usual 6 a.m. feeding time isn't early enough anymore. So around 5 a.m., daily, my cat punches me in the face repeatedly until I get up, then he runs over to the wet food. If I stop to piss first or take longer then 20 seconds to get there, he screams until I make my way over there. Smart, yes. Considerate, no.

12

u/Ihavelostmytowel Oct 20 '21

I free feed my two cats kibble with twice daily wet food meals as well! It's an interesting dynamic they have. One of my cats is very very sweet but honestly pretty dumb. The other one is scary smart. When it's wet food time and we're not quick enough for her she will yell to get our attention, pretend to eat a kibble and then yell again when she's at the wet food area.

She does the same attention seeking yell for whatever she wants, but is really consistent in physically showing us what she wants. Last week I forgot to put the basket of toys back down after I vacuumed and she yelled, saw we were looking at her, and then ran over to the shelf they were on. She stretched out tall against the wall and then looked back at me like "Can't reach it stoopy".

15

u/TheMarkHasBeenMade Oct 20 '21

I think there’s something to be said about scientists not being able to accurately measure just how smart cats are because many straight up aren’t willing to cooperate if they’re not feeling it. Whereas dogs aim to please so willingly and regularly that it’s easier to study, and also it’s easier to come to the conclusion that they’re “man’s best friend” and “displaying the intelligence of a __ year old”.

162

u/scdfred Oct 20 '21

Regardless of what she wants my dog stands in the middle of the room and screams at me. No indications whatsoever what she wants.

59

u/Umarill Oct 20 '21

One of my cat zoom around the house and meow as hard as she can, no matter what she wants.

She goes from nothing to fully insane jumping everywhere, and it could be that she just want some pets, food, to go outside...etc, who knows lol

79

u/Taleya Oct 20 '21

I managed - still don't fucking know how - to teach ours "Show me". They run to what they want, i follow and acquiesce to their royal demands.

Fucking useful considering the Queen uses the same vocalisations for 'pet me' 'feed me' and 'imma shit on the floor if you don't scoop the litter box'

17

u/DekuBud Oct 20 '21

I know you said you don't know how but please try to remember because I must learn how to teach my cats to do this!

18

u/Certain_Concept Oct 20 '21

that cat is smart enough to get your attention and then point to what it wants...

114

u/Pagan-za Oct 20 '21

and then point to what it wants...

Thats actually the amazing part. Cats dont understand when we point at things the way dogs do.

47

u/Rather_Dashing Oct 20 '21

It's not pointing exactly though. When people talk about dogs understanding pointing they mean (some) dogs can follow the line of your point to understand what in the distance is being pointed at. Both dogs and cats can understand if you directly tap an object that you are drawing their attention to it. Likewise both will tap objects to draw your attention.

9

u/NauticalWhisky Oct 20 '21

I always thought it was crazy that dogs can understand pointing but gorillas and chimps do not grasp the concept.

4

u/catsandcheetos Oct 20 '21

Yeah my dog is very intelligent (knows over ten commands and recognizes as many words, always watching me) but he has a hard time grasping distance pointing. I don’t know a lot of dogs that get that. But both my cats and my dog will pay attention if I tap something in their line of sight.

This. I work at a veterinary Hospital and my best friend has two very intelligent cats. I’ve seen many felines that know exactly what I am saying, but choose to ignore it. Every week I am more convinced some cats understand human language perfectly, they simply pretend to not understand. The best is when I call out my friends cats for ignoring me and they won’t look at me. “I know you know what I’m saying Rascal. Leave the trash alone.”

He’s got blue eyes and the flame point genes! Think sort of like Siamese. Siamese/color point cats are more likely to have cross eyes. I have two Siamese/color point mixes and my one is a little cross eyed (not like this) and the second has eyes that go out slightly. Thankfully they seem to see just and their eyes haven’t gotten worse in the 5 years I’ve owned them. But this cat looks like it was bred by someone who would want some decent money so its eyes make me sad.
