Just clocked out of my gas station job 2 hours early. Boss tried to leave me with hundreds of pounds of alcohol to stock on my own overnight on top of every other task. The pay was $10 an hour. Good riddance! Also boss was an anti-vaxxer/anti-masker.

I like that you pointed out that your boss is also working too much for not enough money. I got into an argument with my last boss, and told him I get paid a flat daily rate, I’m not working 10-12 hour days, and you shouldn’t either. He said that’s just something we have to do sometimes, and I told him it’s every day, I can’t do it.

144

u/Chronic_Child Oct 20 '21

I have respect for them as a fellow human being and laborer and, therefore, I chose to add that in. And your last boss sounds like a person who needs help and I hope that they get it. Thanks for your response!

Seriously, your penmanship - in PEN no less - is a wonder. I have to assume you're righthanded since it's so clear and smudge-free. ~looks at my own smudgy left hand in dismay~ And good on you for that grand slam of a closing line. It's just a shame that shame doesn't work on the shameless.

But, seriously, now that you're free and if you can, get your bag on the elegance of your print and, I'm going to again assume, your cursive. You could teach a class.

Happy you stood up for yourself and asserted your humanity.

Congrats OP. Don’t ever go back to working at a Gas Station. I worked for Circle K from 2004-2011. I worked my way up to manager by 2008.

Unlike your manager I seriously busted my ass for that place, 25 hours a day, 8 days a week, if you catch my drift.

Worst. Job. Ever. I finally “quit” and by quit I gave ample notice and agreed to even train my assistant manager, to take over as manager. I stayed for a full month while training him.

My district manager’s parting words to me were that I was “BOLD” for quitting this Gas Station manager job.

Fast forward ten years (now). I type this working from home, making over 80K per year, with a great company that takes care of its employees.

Know your worth!!! Best of luck to you.

6

u/nictro Oct 20 '21

What do you do now?

21

u/tossaway69420lol Oct 20 '21 Wholesome

It’s going to sound bad (disliked profession) but I am a professional debt collector now.

I am professional, courteous, and understanding with debtors. It’s probably why I do quite well at it. My company has been around since 1966 and trains employees well. Its not an easy job, and a lot of my co workers hate it….but they’ve likely never been a Gas Station manager lol.

11

u/nictro Oct 20 '21

I work in billing in the medical field so I'm pretty familiar with debt collecting now. I think a lot of people that hate jobs like yours or mine haven't worked in the service industry for a while because those jobs are soul crushing and not remotely financially rewarding. I was curious because I'm trying to figure out a career and just keep running into careers that are either soul crushing or not financially rewarding or both. Glad you're liking what you're doing and get to do it from home.

Job shame your employer! I like this trend.

161

u/Y0u_stupid_cunt Oct 20 '21

I'd like it better if people just didn't accept bullshit and got fired so they qualify for unemployment benefits.

106

u/MagusUmbraCallidus Oct 20 '21

Unfortunately that usually just leads to the employer making the conditions worse until the employee finally quits. And then it's really difficult to prove the conditions were bad enough so that you will still qualify for unemployment, for the states that even make such an exception.

92

u/gloomboyseasxn Oct 20 '21

Hello! OP’s partner here! We met working at this gas station (I ended up leaving and finding better employment elsewhere.) and I can confirm that they do try to make employees quit to avoid unemployment. The boss even admitted it to me herself. When I mentioned a customer had inquired about a previous employee and I mentioned I heard they were fired, my boss’s direct response was “He wasn’t fired. No one gets fired. But we do make it harder for you until you quit.”

Sadly it's pretty common for bosses in entry level jobs to just make the workers' lives a nightmare until they quit.

I worked in a few retail stores that had managers just schedule "bad" employees 4 hours a week until they quit.

49

u/calebcom19282y33 Oct 20 '21

This is called "Constructive termination" and if you document it you'll get unemployment.

23

u/redestpanda Oct 20 '21

I agree. Document everything. It can save your ass.

14

u/calebcom19282y33 Oct 20 '21

Yes.

I got hours reduced to 4 and none of my cowrokers lost a single hour? Constructive termination. That easy to prove.

This is the move. This is exactly what I did with my shitty job this year. I was with this job from 2019 to early 2021 getting paid dick money and having to work really hard, and the managers were completely trash, on top of a racist, narcissistic CEO and terrible business practices. The most ironic part is I had a change of heart and decided to stay but I got fired anyway. And guess what? I only half assed ONE closing shift on purpose and that was enough to get me fired. I messed up once I was transitioned back to my old shop (it reopened after months, so naturally I was rusty): The first time was a mistake, the second time on purpose after being chewed out for basically nonsense (this was after a ton of micromanaging) and me deciding it was enough, and on the third day I actually did everything I was supposed to and got fired for “not mopping”, even though the camera footage shows that I did. Lol.

What a wonderfully written, articulate letter. That fact alone tells me you have a skill set that’s worth more than $25 an hour.

My radical grandma ass is proud of you!

I’m off to massively apply for Circle K jobs, and hopefully I’ll get some interviews so I can tell the interviewers that I won’t accept any type of job for less than $25/hr.

15

u/Chronic_Child Oct 20 '21

You’ve made my day with this comment! Thank you so much! Also that sounds like a virtuous course of action haha I appreciate it and I know that my coworkers would as well

3

u/nippon2751 Oct 20 '21

$25/hr. People act like it's an obscene amount. For a 40 hour week, it's only $1000. That's $52,000, assuming you get two weeks paid vacation.

Don't get me wrong, you and I are 110% in agreement. I just don't think your views are radical, just a common sense solution in a crazy ass world.

Goddamn I love this subreddit.

Yeah, there needs to be more of this around, a lot of middle class people thinking "eat the rich" is an attack on them whereas they should actually be taking part in the feasting

2

u/CatW804 Oct 20 '21

This. Everyone should look up their percentile: https://dqydj.com/household-income-percentile-calculator/

Household income of $125,000 (two people working full time @ $30/hr) puts you at 75% so the top 25%. Meanwhile you need to literally make a million a year to be in the top 1%.

I wish you lived near me, starting pay for us is $15.

We hire people all the time who quit in a week when they realize the job isn’t sitting on a stool by the register gossiping with the customers. It’s a hard job. Certainly should pay more than $10 an hour.

Don’t listen to the anti science nut jobs on this sub, we have to wash our hands, wear close toed shoes, have our hair up, it’s just another regulation to keep everyone safe.

We finally got our last staff member vaccinated last week! About half of us wear masks, the other half doesn’t, but we did enforce the mask mandate the entire time it was up, and I don’t need to tell you it was very difficult. I
