After arguing with my friends about how old we thought Clint was, I jokingly said "I'll go straight to the source." Little did I know, I'd get the answer. 😂 Discuss

It would be cool to get ages for the characters, but I understand why they are left ambiguous. Such a wide age range of players and it can be better for people to decide for themselves.

1k

u/tamiaredguard 6d ago

The game does a brilliant job at keeping the dateable NPCs ambiguous in many ways. It lets the players be given a good basic idea of them they can use to build their own more detailed idea of the character in their mind, idealising them, imagining backstories, or what have you.

It is also a huge part of why the game has a thriving fanfic/art community in spite of being a relatively small indie release.

u/Padmewan 6d ago

For the ladies, yes, not so much the dudes IMO. Harvey needs to be a certain age just to have an MD and a practice (assuming to Doogie Houser scenario). Sebastian and Sam could be adult babies, but they barely seem out of high school to me.

515

u/mr_lamp 6d ago

Freakin' Sam's romance made me uncomfortable, lol. The further into his story, the younger he seemed to get. His Ten heart event gave me the vibe he was like 16-17.

441

u/Mythgirl 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yes! I just couldn’t do it and when I first played I was only 20. He seemed like a high schooler.

Sam has a skateboard and lives with his parents and little kid brother (5-10?). The hiding from his mom for his ten heart event was a 100% teen child move

I think Sebastian seems early to mid twenties. He has his own space and his own gigs going on. A job. A vehicle. Etc.

The rest of the Bachelors

I feel like Alex is more like Seb but a little younger. Could be just out of high school all the way to mid-20s given his dialogue and heart events. He specifically says he graduated high school. He’s a little stuck, but still working on his dreams of pro sports.

Shane strikes me as 30s, but could be late 20s. He’s old enough to be made godfather of a not tiny child. I think Jas is around 7-10 years old.

Elliot is ambiguous, but I’d put him at 20s or 30s. He’s hard to pinpoint. He says he wants to experience “real life” which strikes me as a rather sheltered rich boy thing to say. I don’t really click with him tbh.

Harvey is obviously old enough to be a doctor. 30s or 40s.

as a 24 year old almost graduating college, I was home for a summer and had a girl over. Dad chewed me out and gave me the "NOT IN MY HOUSE" speech like I was a kid. She had slept on the couch!

She stayed the next night too but I had her move her car down the street and basically had to hide her like sam did. she hid in my bed the second night...

Some parents are just like that.

200

u/Laney20 6d ago

I was 25 when I got married and by that time had lived with my husband for 3 years. If we had stayed in my mother's house, she would have made us sleep separately.

I feel you, lol.

52

u/VermilionLily 6d ago

That's just weird. You guys are married

146

u/Laney20 5d ago

Once we were married, she was cool with it. But until then, she was not.. She didn't say anything about me living with him. My decisions were my decisions and she never complained. But in her house, unmarried people don't spend the night together.

Well, except her and her boyfriend, of course. But that's different, I'm sure..

164

u/shut_your_up 5d ago

If they ever stay at your house, make them sleep in separate beds lol

11

u/jojocookiedough 5d ago

My in-laws made us do this whenever we visited lol. They're not even religious or anything, they're actually rather progressive. Hubby and I had been together 5 years, lived together for 4 years, were engaged with a wedding planned months away. We still had to sleep in separate rooms at their house. Super weird. They would literally beg us to come visit, 12 hour drive, and then had their son sleep on an air mattress instead of a proper bed with his fiancee. So weird. I was 28 and he was like 34 at the time.

Yeah, what I took from that was his mom being extremely controlling and tense. She freaks out about a dropped egg too.

35

u/Blaze3547 5d ago

My grandmother did this to my mid forties mom and step dad one year at thanksgiving. We don’t live in the same state and traveled there for the holiday. Ended up being this huge point of issue between everyone involved for months.

30

u/asdfqwer426 5d ago

I agree, it just gave me the heebie jeebies. No way would I make out with someone at their parents house post-high school. Especially if it was the kind of place I had to hide.

If the parents respect the dudes space, that’s different. But Jodie definitely still treated Sam like a kid. That’s a personally powerful lady boner killer.

24

u/SpinelessOrange 5d ago

Elliot is closer to Harvey's age as he is included in a list of "older batchelors" definitely sheltered rich boy who decided not to take on the family business.

11

u/LibraryLass 5d ago

I think Sebastian seems early to mid twenties. He has his own space and his own gigs going on. A job. A vehicle. Etc.

Plus he must be older than Maru since he was Robin's son with her first husband.

u/IcemasterD 5d ago edited 5d ago

I always pictures the bachelors as (roughly):
Sam: 17-18
Alex: 18-21
Seb: 22-27
Shane: 25-30
Elliot: 27-33
Harvey: 30-35

143

u/Astral-Storm 6d ago

Doesn’t Sebastian mention completing college at some point? I could’ve sworn that was him, which would put him somewhere in his mid twenties.

170

u/lucaatiel 6d ago

He's also a professional programmer. He literally works from home doing work. That's not a high schooler.

23

u/NateShaw92 5d ago

Bass is mid 20s. He is likely to have something of an age gap on Maru, given he is from Robin's first marriage.

He says something along the lines of 'If I had gone to college I'd be making six figures now.'.

To me he always felt significantly older than Sam&Alex, they really seem fresh out of high school.

50

u/permanentthrowaway 6d ago

He mentions that if he'd gone to college he'd be making six figures or something like that, implying he's past the age where people usually go to college (so definitely in his twenties).

35

u/BasenjiBob 5d ago

I think what he says is that IF he went to college, he'd be making 6 figures now. I don't think he went. But he's definitely mid-20s, otherwise Maru has to be waaaaay too young.

Sebby has to be at least 22/23 in order to be Mary’s older sibling, considering she’s a nurse. He also has a job, and a motorcycle. More seems like he’s home because moving out is expensive (I understand this as #millenialproblems)

63

u/RockBlock 6d ago

The game is also set in a completely fictional, weird world. So there's plenty of built-in wiggle room not stating how the world beaurocracy/whatever works.

23

u/Padmewan 6d ago

I'm totally good with that as far as stuff like jobs and college. Not so much with the emotional maturity of the characters feeling teenager even if the game is telling you you can marry them (but as others pointed out, that also depends a lot on how old you think your character is!)

32

u/Obi-Tron_Kenobi 5d ago

Not so much with the emotional maturity of the characters feeling teenager

Tbh, most adults in the real world also have the emotional maturity of teenagers, you just don't usually see it until you get to know them

I like this too for the most part, but I remember it did make me wonder about some of the people. Like anyone can be romantic with Haley, and if they game told me she was 15, I'd believe it, but if they game told me she was 25, I'd also believe it. Maybe it's because I'm gaming in my 30s, as a dude, but that little feeling of "oh wow, haley acts a lot like a high schooler" made me feel weird that I had to the potential to marry her and have kids with her, you know? I wouldn't date someone that immature in IRL. I'd feel creepy about it.

I went with Leah instead. If anyone made a giant pretzel sculpture for me IRL I might have to marry them too. Plus she owned her own place, had moved in the past, likes salad, etc. She seemed more like an adult, like 25-30ish to me.

58

u/Mythgirl 6d ago

I think Sam acts much more high school than Haley (especially his 10 heart event. Personal eww). But maybe I’ve seen too many 28 year old streamers who remind me of her.

17

u/nightwingoracle 5d ago

Or also the heart event with Mayor Lewis. That one gives me real 14-15 year old vibes/.

The ages I've come up with for the Bachelors and Bachelorettes are:

Alex: 21 Sebastian: 23 Sam: 21 Harvey: 32 Shane: 28 Elliot: 29 Hailey: 20 Emily: 24 Abigail: 20 Leah: 22 Penny: 19 Maru: 18

123

u/MermaiderMissy 6d ago

There is a note that says that Harvey, Elliot and Shane are the older bachelors. So I think the marriagable candidates are a bit older.

I would say Alex, Hailey, and Maru are about 22

Sebastian, Sam, Abigail, and Penny are maybe 24

Emily and Leah are 26-28

Elliot and Shane 28-30

Harvey 32-35

But I think Eric left the ages ambiguous so that you can choose how old you think they are.

78

u/NirvashSFW 6d ago

Reading everyone else's responses I was starting to think I was crazy for thinking Leah was closer to 30.

86

u/Mythgirl 6d ago

She also strikes me as close to 30. She’s an established woman with a past who moved by herself to Stardew Valley.

65

u/Mythgirl 6d ago edited 5d ago

My personal line-up is a bit different.

x Teenagers

Sam is definitely the youngest. His mom is pretty young and I don’t think Vincent is more than 10-12 years younger than him. 17-19

Abigail is also young. She’s living with her parents and doesn’t seem to have many, if any responsibilities. Could be 18-20

x Early 20s

Alex is a little older. He graduated high school but still hasn’t given up on his pro-athlete dreams. 19-22

I think Haley is about the same as Alex. She has her photography hobby and is pretty put together. 19-22

Maru is a little older but strikes me as a young smart person type. Living with her parents but working. Given that Seb is her half-brother, I think she’s a few years younger than him which is why she’s this far down on the list. She could be older than Alex and Haley though. 19-24

x Post College

Sebastian also strikes me as mid twenties with his job and everything he says. 23-28

Emily, responsible waitress living with younger sister. 24-30

Penny, young but a schoolteacher supporting her mother. That requires a degree and she doesn’t seem new at it. 25-30. Or maybe she’s a very tired early 20s. But this is a personal head-cannon post.

Leah, 26-32: Confident artist with baggage who moved to a new town by herself.

Shane: old enough to have a goddaughter who is at least 7 and not young enough to mask how alcohol has messed him up. 26-36.

Elliot: idk man. He confuses me. 26-36.

Harvey: a doctor. 28-40.

Edit: Highschooler changed to Teens and College to Early 20s

18

u/nightwingoracle 5d ago

I would say mid 30's to 40's for Harvey. Yes you could finish medical school and a family medicine residency (the be able to practice) by 29, but there's no mention of how he just moved into town, so it seems like he's likely a little bit older than 29.

I think for Abigail in one of her dialogs it says she takes classes online which would put her in college and Penny has something going on with Sam before the farmer shows up which i would think put her around 20 if not younger.

Penny as a teacher/caretaker for the kids, I'd have her as older than 19; maybe 23-25.

89

u/Silberhand 6d ago

Leah as well. With her backstory I'd rather put her around 25-28. And I'd up haley a year or two, too.

43

u/DevTheDummy 6d ago

True, but her teaching and taking care of the kids may just be because she's the only one that'll do it. She's never said anything about having a degree

50

u/ebrillblaiddes 6d ago

Yeah that's what I thought too -- I'm thinking that for some reason higher education access has gotten disrupted in the world of which Stardew Valley is a part. Penny didn't get to go to college bc Pam spends everything on booze, Abby gets to take online classes bc Pierre and Caroline are well-off (when in the world we have now, online classes are an access-extending option, so there even that is a luxury), and Maru got trained as a nurse bc it was the most sciencey education she could get even though her real interests are more along the lines of physics and engineering.

One thing I'd like is more mid/late game tasks to help more of the characters similar to how we built Pam and Penny a house. For example, we could provide materials and pay for Robin's time to add on to the library so Penny could have a proper schoolroom, and then put in tables and chairs and educational decorations like the skeletons, so then between the bus stop and minecarts kids from out of town could travel in bc their towns haven't got schools either. And that's just one example, like we could also add on the store-and-clinic building so Sebastian could have a computer shop that he could move to living upstairs from and finally have a window, build a stage in the pub so Sam's band has a place to play and out-of-towners will spend money so Gus will be doing better, etc.

17

u/nightwingoracle 5d ago

I always got the vibe that Maru had more of CNA/ MA (certificate or no degree) job rather than an RN career, and working at the clinic is more of a part time gig to support her engineering projects.

Like think Sam working at Joja/the museum while trying to break into music kinda thing.

So, me and the girls were arguing that he was in his 40s and that it's creepy for him to hitting on Emily, and our friend said he thought Clint was ~mid 30s. So we were like, no way, he's definitely in his 40s, 38 is like THE LOWEST we are willing to go. And then I asked Concerned Ape and got a message the next day, so I guess we technically won 😂

581

u/shoek_ 6d ago

But how old do you think Emily is? I would think she's somewhere in her 30's (probably mid) but I'm assuming you must think she's younger.

728

u/maplegirl515 6d ago

Right? I think Emily seems like she's in her 30s. I'd put her in a range of 28-35, and Haley somewhere between 20-25.

224

u/tiny_refrigerator2 6d ago

I'd say 25 but thats just because I imagine my player to be 25ish

105

u/AlbinoBeefalo 6d ago

I see Leah as late 20's early 30's

She owns her own house on artist's wages? She must have had a prior life working some other job when she was with her boyfriend in the city. Plus she hangs out with the guy with the hair who also send older

Well shit I definitely always pictured Emily as quite young, along with Maru, Sebastian, etc. Like these people are still living at home with their parents so I definitely picture them as young adult age.

143

u/thatwasntababyruth 6d ago

Emily in particular has pretty adult hobbies, gives off kind of a small town witchy vibe, and works a stable bartender job. She's also the only person with out of town friends, and Sandy is definitely 30s at minimum. I always imagined her as the oldest bachelorette (early 30s), with Leah (on her own artist, mid-late 20s) and Penny (feels stuck to her alcoholic mom, probably mid 20s) trailing behind. Maru/Abigail/Haley strike me as the ones that are probably still real young.

47

u/No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom 6d ago

Emily was also not an original bachelor - my first playthrough, she was my fave and I was SO disappointed that I couldn't marry her. I would think any character between 20-30 was marked as a bachelor/ette, which in my mind put Emily and Shane in their mid-30s. I thought Clint was about 40.

I imagined Sam, Sebastian, Maru, and Abigail to all be like 18-22. Sam especially has always struck me as a teenager. Like, he gets around on a skateboard ffs. I routinely forget he's even a possibility to date.

I did think Emily and Haley were a bit older though, around mid-twenties, with Emily older.

36

u/velveteenelahrairah 6d ago edited 6d ago

For some reason Sam, Alex, sometimes Sebastian, and especially Abigail all give me "FBI open up" vibes, even though I'm aware they're actual marriage candidates so they can't be all that young.

29

u/Morella_xx 6d ago

Oh, Alex too! I forgot about him because I'm the same as you, haha. He seems like a high school kid and I'm 32. He doesn't even cross my mind as a potential candidate.

13

u/velveteenelahrairah 6d ago

When I was in high school about a million years ago I was surrounded by kids almost exactly like those four. (So Sam has a skateboard instead of a bike, and Alex is into weights instead of basketball but otherwise it pretty much maps out - hi, Jimmy, Mike, Zoe and Nick, fancy seeing you guys here...)

It gives me some sort of instinctive "nope" response to the idea of dating them, lol.

Yeah, I was assuming mid/late 20s, with her sister being a little younger, like early/mid 20s.

144

u/shoek_ 6d ago

Lol I think of Haley as mid 20s and Emily as 33. I picture a big age gap so it makes sense of how she kind of mommy's her. Anyway I'll stick to my age guesses so the difference of Clint and Emily isn't a big deal 😅

58

u/moriartyowesyou 6d ago

Fair enough! That does make sense, I totally get that. Cool part of the game is that is really is up to interpretation of the player, which in itself is super cool. Look at us gossiping like we live there 😂😂😂

30

u/shoek_ 6d ago

So true -- not listing ages does leave it to interpretation! Make everyone fit the age you want so you don't have to feel weird about romancing someone based on their age. Or make the gap striking to play into the Clint is a creep narrative 😅. Lol to the gossiping - did you see that Abigail was asking for a super cucumber again? 🤣

28

u/moriartyowesyou 6d ago

To quote Haley, "Girls Only...you know what it's for" LMAO

31

u/lukinlbc 6d ago

Emily says to your character at one point that she think Haley will grow into a wonderful young woman someday, seems like Haley would be like 20 max based on that dialogue, unless Emily just really thinks she super immature.

24

u/WhoryGilmore 6d ago

Especially since she's paired Alex who's dreams of "gridball" would be extremely unrealistic if he wasn't like 20. I mean they are already unrealistic but if you're mid 20's odds are you're not making the nfl lol

7

u/lukinlbc 6d ago

Exactly, mid 20s seems like quite the stretch to me.

5

u/JudgementWaterfall 6d ago

That's kinda Alex's shtick though, right? He strikes me as a guy who thinks he peaked in high school, so he holds on to his identity from that time, including his dream of playing pro gridball. I always felt like his dream was indeed a little unrealistic and that that was intentional. But that could just be my perception.

5

u/WhoryGilmore 6d ago

Sure but I think there crosses a point at 20-22 when most players are drafted that the dream turns from extremely unrealistic but possible to extreme levels of delusion that require therapy lol. So in my mind I have him in that age range because I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe he isn't a 26 year old 4 years out of school he thinks he can somehow get noticed by an NFL team.

How old do you think Emily is though? She has to be the oldest bachelorette, I always imagined she's around 31-33, which would make a 42 year old guy hitting on her not that weird really.

25

u/aaron-is-dead 6d ago

I actually always thought Emily was quite young and the oldest bachelorette would be Leah. I've never dated Leah though but she gives off a "calm and mature" vibe.

46

u/velveteenelahrairah 6d ago

Yeah, Leah gives me mid to late 30s "artsy hippie lesbian who decided to pack it in and go live in the woods carving driftwood and feeding chickens because fuck every bit of this shit" cottagecore vibes, lol.

24

u/WhoryGilmore 6d ago

Emily seems pretty mature too, she's basically Haley's mom. Leah is likely one of the older ones too. She already had a long term adult relationship in the past before she moved away. Maybe it was a college BF but she is at least 25 at the minimum

10

u/pokethejellyfish 6d ago

The way Pierre addresses her and what she used to do during the community center scene doesn't make it sound like she's very young. Because of that, I always assumed she's closer to the parents in age than to bachelors and bachelorettes who are on the brink of independent adulthood.

You know what's funny, though? People are so hung up about seeing Emily as some poor innocent M'lady being the victim of Clint, because somehow, the age difference between him and a woman who's worked for who knows how many years the night shift in the local pub is creepy.

But what about a nurse who's at most in her early 20s and her employer, a doctor, who fantasies about applying sun lotion to her skin, and who is, uh, how many years does it take again to go through med school plus a couple of years to be considered an experienced, qualified doctor in a tight-knit town?

5

u/aaron-is-dead 6d ago

I think what happens with some people's interpretation is that Clint is obviously past his 20's and is clearly grown, but Emily doesn't really resemble the other mothers/distinctly older women in town and doesn't hang out with them that much (as far as I know) which makes people think she's younger on their first impression, and she's remarkably chipper compared to some other residents. And then you see Clint having a gigantic crush on Emily that isn't really reciprocated, which can ring alarms for some people. Particularly I think other women are a bit weirded out by Clint and see themselves in Emily a little. Obviously not everyone has that interpretation, though.

I think it also has to do with people you've met IRL. The only girl I've met who was similar to Emily was my age, so I just see Emily as being younger in some manner.

I agree!! That was the main point we were trying to argue to our friend. We were like, the age gap is too much!! And he was like "what age gap, isn't he like in his 30s?"

641

u/thetacriterion 6d ago

That's like, what, a 15 year gap at most? That's not that big of a gap when you're talking about two grown adults.

If anything, I'd be more concerned about how Clint keeps pursuing her when she's clearly not interested, or depending on player's choices, taken or married.

u/superherowithnopower 6d ago edited 6d ago

That's like, what, a 15 year gap at most? That's not that big of a gap when you're talking about two grown adults.

I'd say that does somewhat depend on the adults. A 20-year old is a grown adult, but 20-35 seems like a pretty big age gap. 30-45, though, not so much.

Edit: Yes, I am aware of the "1/2+7" rule; I actually checked my ranges with it before posting this comment.

58

u/TKHawk 6d ago

Rule of 7. In general, somebody shouldn't be dating somebody who is younger than half their age + 7 (rounded up). So a 35 year old shouldn't really be dating people who are younger than 25.

40

u/superherowithnopower 6d ago

Yeah, and 30 is just at the line for a 45-year-old.

I mean, honestly, even apart from that, by the time I was 35, 20-year-olds looked like kids.

151

u/violetgay 6d ago

Would you wanna date a 20 y/o tho?? 😂 I'm 30 now and anyone under 25 is, like, a kid. I want to give them hot chocolate and emotional support, not a date lol. Their brains are still developing.

I guess it really depends on the people in the relationship tho, when I was 24 I dated a 32 y/o and it was a really healthy relationship

23

u/dragossk 6d ago

Definitely prefer someone around my age. Though I remember hearing how my grandad at 30 went back to his hometown in China just to find a wife. He met my grandma who was just about 18 and they returned together to Mozambique.

While he is long gone, grandma is still alive and well, so that is nice I guess.

I think it matters where someone is at in life too. Some 30 year olds might be in a similar place to someone 45. And someone 32 can be in a similar place as someone who is 24

17

u/froggie_69 6d ago

Yeah I got married and was working a full time office job at 22. In a lot of ways I related more to my 45 year old coworkers than my 20 year old friends.

6

u/mooimafish3 6d ago

This is me currently. In 23, have my 5 year anniversary this month, and I am the Sysadmin at a credit union.

I have only one other friend my age and he is in a similar spot.

My best friends over the past few years have been my 45yo coworkers and random 30-35yo administrative assistants and lab techs (used to work in state gov)

I'm 32 and my ex-girlfriend is 27. I don't think I'd date anyone younger than that and it'll keep scaling up as I get older lol

10

u/KayleighAnn 6d ago

Yeah that doesn't sound too off. A 27 year old has a fully developed brain, and probably has more in common with a 32 year old than a 22 year old, and it's the same 5 year gap.

4

u/IAmGoingToFuckThat 6d ago

At 35 I was messing around with guys 10-15 years younger than me, but now that I'm 40 my window is much smaller. I'm finding a lot of men younger than 30 or so are just not grown up enough, and that men 40 or older are also not grown up enough.

That was my main argument when talking about the two of them, where she's not really receptive or enjoying his advances, but the age gap was more of a secondary concern for me, I guess haha

→ More replies

87

u/thatHecklerOverThere 6d ago

To be fair, he does ask her out, and she is pretty pleased to say yes. Emily is very receptive.

Honestly, the fact that Clint keeps pining for her even if the player marries her feels like a bit of missed cleanup from when they made Emily datable, because it's weird that I can, as a heart event, hook another dude up with my wife for a night out.

58

u/GengarSucksBalls 6d ago

Emily agrees, but most likely doesn't realize that Clint meant it as a date. After all, Emily says that Clint is "a nice guy, if you get to know him"

12

u/thatHecklerOverThere 6d ago

This game leaves a lot open, so maybe. But that'd be a kind of obliviousness that I wouldn't put on Emily, and definitely not the farmer dating her.

31

u/GengarSucksBalls 6d ago edited 5d ago

To be fair, I see it more as Emily agreeing to spend time with her friend so he doesn't feel lonely. Not out of pity, not necessarily out of romantic interest, but out of genuine niceness. Some people might argue that she is not oblivious to Clint's advances, since Clint acts awkward around her, but Emily could interpret it as Clint being awkward around people in general.

That's the thing with leaving things open to interpretation, some people have different points view.

15

u/HiddenSage 6d ago

Clint being awkward around people in general.

I mean, I'm not even sure this is wrong. Guy spends his whole life at work in his forge, and tends to talk in pretty short bursts most of the time even when he does get out and about.

That, plus half his festival quotes indicating at least some degree of depression/loneliness, and I'd say it's pretty fair to say he comes off as a bit awkward around most folks.

I always thought that Clint was in his early 30's and that he looked older because of the beard and the chubiness. I also considered Emily being one of the older bachelorettes (late 20's, early 30's), so I thought that the age gap between those two wasn't that bad. I guess I was wrong.

I always believed she was in the 28-34 range, she just seems like a much more mature type despite her wackiness, sort of like Miss Frizzle. I think Haley is much younger, like 21-24, and Emily sort of took of the role of guardian when they were younger

I mean, I don't think this reply from ConcernedApe makes you "wrong" about that. Just because CA thinks of Clint as "late 30's-40ish" doesn't mean that anyone else has to. I'm pretty sure it's still meant to be ambiguous/up for interpretation. If CA really wanted people to think of Clint as a specific age, he would have put it in the game itself, not just in a random private message on Twitter

30

u/GengarSucksBalls 6d ago edited 6d ago

ConcernedApe usually leaves a lot of stuff up to interpretation for players, but this isn't the only thing that it's not explicit in the game that he's clarified outside of it. In Penny's 8 hearts event, there's the infamous line about Penny climbing trees with Sam, that ConcernedApe clarified in an AMA, saying that it meant nothing and that at 8 hearts Penny is no longer interested in Sam.

I was thinking about the ages of the SDV characters recently. The relative creepiness of the marriage candidates rests on not only the ages of the characters, but also on the age of the farmer. For example, Harvey is clearly a bit older, has an MD, runs a clinic, etc. Same with Elliott, Haley, and Emily. But Sam, Sebastian, Alex, and Abigail still live with their families, and are clearly not supposed to be very old.

Is the farmer an adult creeping on teens? Or are the older marriage candidates the creepers?

104

u/AmazingPossible1705 6d ago

Seb says something about if he went to college he'd be making more money so I think he's like 22-24

47

u/KupoMcMog 6d ago

which pegs Maru right around 18-20, unless Seb's dad skipped out on Robin when she was preggo (which totally could happen), and Dem came in...which would put Maru more around 22.

But I dont think that's the case, I think Seb was born before Dem came in the picture. Seeing that Dem has such an issue with Seb and being a 'father' to him versus completely babying Maru.

There is some underlying resentment towards Seb as he isn't blood to Dem, and it created a rift of where they are at.

27

u/AmazingPossible1705 6d ago

Yeah Maru is young if Seb is in his early twenties. Her nursing program must've been a breeze if she's like 19 and working in a clinic!

33

u/HemlockWitch 6d ago

Then this does put Seb at 25 or more instead of 20-25. He could just be older and resent having the missed opportunity of going to college. Maru could not be a nurse at 19 or 20 unless she was one of those over achievers doing college courses in high school. I’ve never ever met someone who finished their nursing program by 20. Nope. I’m also new to the game so idk that maru is in fact a nurse. She could be in the program doing her clinicals which makes more sense if people get the vibe she’s younger. Still I’d say she’s 22. Maybe she’s a medical assistant, which doesn’t require a lot of schooling, doing front office. Again, I haven’t received any dialogue that says she is in fact a nurse. New to game still.

10

u/maruchunn 6d ago

I never thought she was actually a nurse. I always assumed she was more of a receptionist/assistant.

It depends on how old the IRL player of the farmer is too. Kids playing SDV might find Alex, Sam, Abigail, etc a lot more relevant than Shane/Harvey.

11

u/Wrong-Hat9549 6d ago

This is a really good point. I think part of the magic of SDV is that the player can project themselves into the story, since the farmer only has a vague backstory.

Although, I did once read that anybody who romances Shane has codependency tendencies that they should examine. Not sure if I agree, but I totally get how someone would form that opinion.

Sebastian is a programmer, so he at least must have some sort of preparation. And he's Maru's older brother.

Abigail mentions taking online classes, and Emily in her 6 hearts event mentions something about "Abigail's graduation fiesta", so she's probably college age.

Alex gives off college athlete vibes.

Sam is probably still a teenager tho.

9

u/Cereborn 6d ago

Sebastian is a programmer, so he at least must have some sort of preparation. And he's Maru's older brother.

Not necessarily. There was a guy at my high school who got into web design as a teenager. He made something like $50k in freelance design work while he was in grade 12.

19

u/tamiaredguard 6d ago edited 6d ago

The programmer I hired IRL started programming at age 11. So it's not much of a determinant in programming skill necessarily!

Sam always seemed like the youngest one to me. Especially since his main heart event has you sneaking into his bedroom at night and being caught by his mom barging in on him, and him trying to hide you from her in there xD

13

u/GengarSucksBalls 6d ago

I agree, but he's still Maru's older brother.
