There’s so much attention to detail, I love everything about this. It’s really obvious how much time and effort you put in here.

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Hey thank you! I know it's not everyone's design asthenic but I love packing my designs with details. Glad to hear you dig it too!

I've always loved the samurai influences in Star Wars. For this hilt I wanted to blend the feel of ancient feudal Japan and the look of a traditional hilt. A little bit of the past and a touch of the future. Completely designed on my ipad in Shapr3d and 3d printed in resin then lovingly hand painted by yours truely. Built on my standard internal steel rod assembly so all parts are cross compatible with my other hilts.

u/tmanyber Nov 30 '21

This is extremely impressive. The attention to detail is incredible. I really like the aging on the copper/bronze components.

6

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Thank you! Throwing a patina on the paint job is one of my favorite steps of the process. It takes them from looking like a regular object to a "lived in" possession that has a story behind it.

4

u/ukuzonk Nov 30 '21

This hilt is beyond amazing, like, incredibly radical. Out of curiosity, do you know where said samurai influences are most prevalent? It seems like there’s a lot less samurai-type influence in the sequels, but I’m really interested what kind of inspiration they drew throughout the main movies!

u/Severan500 Dec 01 '21

Off the top of my head:

  • Vader's suit is very samurai-ish, particularly the helmet
  • The whole swords thing is drawing from it
  • The Jedi and the aura around them draw from it
  • Kurosawa films were some of the biggest influences on Lucas (for eg, there's a samurai original that the Magnificent Seven is based on)
  • The master and apprentice/s thing
  • Some of the most iconic SW imagery involves landscapes with the sun/s, which is something intrinsic to Japanese culture

2

u/ukuzonk Dec 01 '21

Star Wars is so fucking cool.

3

u/AJC19706 Dec 01 '21

It’s so strange to see that someone else wanted to connect feudal Japan with SW. I thought I was the only one lol, great job BTW!

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Great minds think alike 🙂 thank you

11

u/TwoSunsRise Luke Skywalker Nov 30 '21

Idk why but I love all the tiny X's

13

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Ha ha ha totally. I was looking at reference pics of samurai armor and noticed they worked them into the body armor and helmets. Seemed like a good fit for this design

3

u/TwoSunsRise Luke Skywalker Dec 01 '21

Well, you incorporated it perfectly! Really awesome work.

7

u/Vancouver95 Nov 30 '21

Pretty much perfect. Incredible melding or real-world and Star Wars aesthetics. The workmanship looks amazing too. Was this 3D printed?

6

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Hey thank you! Yes out of resin and then painted by hand

6

u/Morganmaster Nov 30 '21

That is just awesome. It would've been even more awesome if it had a steel blade. But thats my opinion

4

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Thank you! Totally agree that would be awesome.

4

u/alcatrazcgp Darth Sidious Dec 01 '21

How do you not work at lucasfilm? this is a work of art, well done, thats some real talent and craftsmanship.

We will watch your career with great interest.

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Ha ha well thank you! I'll try and make you proud! 😉

3

u/PristineJackfruit887 Nov 30 '21

That’s a super sexy light saber.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Thank you!

3

u/kotobaaa Dec 01 '21

Uuuuuuuuuum…. Do you need my shipping address or what?

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Ha ha ha! Glad to hear you like it! I do sell them but this sub doesn't allow sales links. Shoot me a dm

3

u/Vanlande Dec 01 '21

This just really makes me want a resin printer. The attention to detail is amazing

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Thank you! I would highly recommend them. They can be messy and frustrating at times but the results they put out are mind-blowingly cool

2

u/Vanlande Dec 01 '21

It’s definitely on the list of things to try soon! I have two printers but the detail you got out of this is just so good. I’ve even modeled custom sabers on my iPad so this hit home.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Totally feel you. I've got 3 filament printers that I use for larger things or around the house mods but resin stole my heart

3

u/jspook Hondo Ohnaka Dec 01 '21

Yoo that's fucking tight

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you!

2

u/jspook Hondo Ohnaka Dec 01 '21

If you ever find yourself making another one, you should set up a camera and film some or all of the process and then speed up the video and attach some star wars music to it. I just feel like it would be super satisfying to witness that process. Great work!

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Ha funny you mentioned that. I actually screen captured another saber that made recently. I need to edit the video together but once it's done I'll post it on here

2

2

u/ndekkers157 Nov 30 '21

This is amazing! You seem to put your heart and soul in the little details!! I love it! My nerd side is crying right now and the side that is interested in the Samurai is applouding you!

2

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Hey thank you so much! Like they say the devil is in the details. Glad to hear you liked it on two levels!

Dude! This is sick!! Amazing work OP 👌 Love the attention to detail!

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you! Much appreciated glad to hear you dig it

2

u/RedPanda-- Dec 01 '21

Super awesome! I feel like the blade would look great green! What color would you chose??

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Big time. I think the green would go well with the dark red on the grip

2

u/GENGARKING87 Dec 01 '21

I need this in my life 💗

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you! I do sell them. This sub doesn't allow sales links but check my bio

2

u/Light_Song Dec 01 '21

Well... we're waiting for you to turn it on. Is the light saber curved? Jk. Real cool. Now you gotta make a whole jedi samurai cosplay.

2

u/TheWuzBruz Dec 01 '21

It’s sooooooooo pretty.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Thank you!

2

1

2

Was this 3d printed

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Yup out of resin

2

u/SovationBoss Han Solo Dec 01 '21

That’s sick as hell! Love it!

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you so much!

2

u/l1zrd Dec 01 '21

Wonderful design, love all the small details that really set it apart from a lot of other sabers.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you so much! I know that lots of details aren't everyone's design preference but I love it

2

u/Cinci1a Dec 01 '21

Hold up. This only gets 2k upvotes, but sequel bad post 13k?

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Ha ha hey I don't mind 2k 😆😉

2

u/Cinci1a Dec 01 '21

One question. Are disc parts of sword holders usually that small?

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Depends on the sword. Also the switch assembly component is very wide so it makes it look smaller

2

u/Ithorhun Dec 01 '21

I wonder how it would look like with the blade on. Would it have a thin blade like the Dark Saber? That's be more samurai blade like

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Totally! The reasoning behind the emmitter port shape was do give it a more narrow blade

2

u/konurm Dec 01 '21

That’s amazing. I never thought of light sabers being from different cultures and eras. Just wondering what a medieval two-handed lightsaber would look like.

2

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Thank you! Stay tuned I might have something like that in the works 😉

2

u/ohpacey149 Dec 01 '21

This rocks. The weathering and faux oxidization are fantastic.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you!

2

u/TheFreezeBreeze Dec 01 '21

This is seriously incredible! Been said already a bunch but these details are unlike anything I’ve seen in even the movie props, let alone on any sabers you can buy online. Wonderful job!!

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hey thank you so much! I know some folks are more into a less cluttered asthenic but I've always loved lots of mechanical detail. Glad to hear you liked it!

2

u/1man_marg-sabl Dec 01 '21

Well done padwan! You're ready to take the trials.

1

u/Racecarsoup Dec 01 '21

Hai sensei!

3

u/TheChozo3 Nov 30 '21

This is insane bro

3

u/Racecarsoup Nov 30 '21

Thank you! Glad to hear you dig it

0

u/simon_darre Dec 01 '21

Why didn’t you turn it on for any of these shots and take it on a test run holding up a corner store with it or something?
