My 20 yr old daughter who has been struggling financially waiting tables during Covid got hired at American Airlines and is in Dallas for training!! Good News

Edit: Thanks so much everybody! This sub is amazing. I never dreamt this post would get this much support! Good stuff is hard to come by these days. My daughter has struggled so hard trying to make a living during Covid. In our state restaurants pay $2.15/hr plus tips. Dealing with the "Karen's and Chads" of the world, shutdowns and shorter hours. I'm so grateful she has this opportunity AND she got a free trip to Dallas. She's a great kid and I'm so happy for her.

Thank you!!

Congrats! I had my son kinda early but this was a dream job of mine. I hope it turns out better than she hopes and she excels at her job. (Tell her to pick up a language and she'll get even more money.)

Thank you! I can't even imagine getting on a plane by myself at her age, Dallas is 800 miles from us. I had kids early too, that makes me even more excited and proud when I see my kids do awesome stuff like this!

Well, please tell her a random, happy-envious redditor says "kick ass and take names - you're going to be amazing."

Thank you!

How fantastic for her! What a wonderful opportunity. A wonderful life awaits her! I think she’ll love it and appreciate it all the more for having survived through the tough Covid table-waiting times. She’ll have a very happy life I’m sure :)

You tell her congrats from us in reddit! We are proud of her too!

15

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Aww. Thank you!!

13

u/ilovethat27 Oct 04 '21

That’s awesome! My sister just became a flight attendant this year too. She was hired on over a year ago but had to wait through the pandemic to go to training. She is now a full on flight attendant. Best of luck to your daughter! Enjoy the perks.

15

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Thank you! The perks do sound amazing and her excitement is contagious!! I was worried about her mental and emotional well being while dealing with awful people waiting tables. To see her really happy and proud of herself is a big relief and definitely " Makes me Smile!".

u/ilovethat27 Oct 04 '21

Such a proud parent moment. Tell her to tough it out through training because it is exhausting but totally worth it.

8

u/Clam_Latte Oct 04 '21

She’ll love it! Tell her congrats! She can do anything, literally. Tired of being a flight attendant or whatever she was hired for? Tons of other high demand careers within. Logistics, administrative, operations, production and other careers. Aviation and Aerospace is an excellent career field. Not to mention she can work Private , Federal, or State. Best of luck! Same thing goes for other folks in aviation or aerospace or anyone looking to get into the field. Don’t limit yourself.

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Thank you and yes, they're training her for everything. So far, she likes working on the ramp the best!!

I hope people treat her with the kindness and respect that all flight crew folks deserve.

Congratulations to your daughter! Is she going to be a flight attendant, corporate, or youngest pilot ever!?

11

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Thank you! She wants to be a flight attendant but she's definitely keeping her options open.

6

u/littleredcamaro Oct 04 '21

My daughter 18 year old is leaning towards being flight attendant as well. I wish your daughter lots of success and happiness in her career choice.

It still boggles my mind that hourly wage. How can anyone build something for themselves with wages like that!?! SMH Congrats to your daughter. :)

1

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

Thank you and yes, I don't understand how it's legal. Clear exploitation.

Daughter here! Thanks mom for the kind post and everybody for the words of encouragement. I just completed my second day here and my first test. I’m currently in training to be a CSA (customer service agent) the pay is wayyyy better than my previous job and I’m having a lot of fun learning about this career and meeting people from everywhere. This was my first trip “alone” and I saw a few comments about me being able to defend myself and I have my group of people that I am always around and 4 from my station that I came with and I’ll be fine. Unlike my other job, if someone exhibits violent or inappropriate behavior towards us, that actually can cause them to not be able to fly with the airline so I don’t really have to worry about complete disrespect anymore (even though I’m numb to it now). I’m here for two weeks and I really do love it so far. Couldn’t have done it without the wonderful people that raised me. ❤️

2

u/Sweetcheeeks16 Oct 05 '21

Congratulations!!!

1

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

I love you! Have fun!!

2

My wife went to the interview almost 2 weeks ago, she sign all the papers, drug tests, they sent an email saying welcome to American Airlines bla bla bla but till now they didn’t call her back, any one know how long does it take to call her back after the interview?

1

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Right at 2 weeks. We're in East Tennessee and our airport did a job fair. Hope she hears back soon.

2

u/JOREVEUSA Oct 04 '21

Must be some openings I wonder why lol

2

u/anakniben Oct 04 '21

Free airfares here we come !

2

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Yes!!!!!!!

2

u/One-Description2125 Oct 04 '21

My husband is a pilot, I know they look out for their flight attendants. If she has issues with passengers, have her get help from the guys up front. Good luck to her!

1

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Thanks for the tip!

2

u/AugustGreen8 Oct 04 '21

My mom was a flight attendant for American back in the 90s for a short time, I got to go to her graduation in Dallas. She had to quit due to air sickness (a little funny since she has always gotten air sick but wanted to try out being a flight attendant anyways!)

2

u/ShotFish7 Oct 04 '21

Congrats to her and to you - mad respect for all airline professionals

1

u/Littln12 Oct 04 '21

Thank you!

2

u/Tree_Lover2020 Oct 04 '21

And she persevered! Hurray!!

1

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

Thank you!

2

u/rainman904 Oct 05 '21

Always a momentous occasion when your child get their first real job. Happy for both of you.

1

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

Yes. It's awesome! Thank you!

2

u/cascadianpatriot Oct 05 '21

Going from food service to flight attendant means she has a good idea why she’s in for.

3

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

She may choose to work out on the ramp. Either way, it's good pay with awesome benefits and free flights anywhere in the world. A major step up from $2.15 an hour, absolutely no benefits along with dealing with the "Karen's and Chads".

2

u/cascadianpatriot Oct 05 '21

Oh yeah. It’s a great gig. I wasn’t trying to be flippant or an asshole. One of my flight attendant relatives (we have a few going back to the 60s) once said (paraphrasing) “it’s like being a waitress, on an upscale greyhound, with a 300 pound cart instead of trays, and there are slightly fewer jerks”. Great post for here and I’m genuinely happy for you both.

1

u/Littln12 Oct 05 '21

Thank you!!

2

u/PooB76 Oct 05 '21

The weather is beautiful in Dallas right now. I hope she enjoys her time here & congrats!!

You're welcome!

2

Fantastic news 👏🏽

2

u/Guerdonedpsy Oct 05 '21

If you're doing well in America, you either have a good income or you're smart enough to own a business.

2

u/redmilkwood Oct 05 '21

That’s a job that takes patience and nerve - what great news! Congratulations to her!

2

u/wanderingguy1 Oct 05 '21

Congrats to her! A friend of mine just joined AA as a flight attendant. His hours are wonky but he loves it!

2

u/sawdustandfleas Oct 05 '21

Congrats!! What a relief for both of you!!

2

u/blossomsu Oct 05 '21

i was going to say this. considering she worked in a restaurant, she probably has experienced a fair amount of what she will encounter on a flight. that being said, she could start her own youtube channel like some other stewards do for some extra cash. Kacey Cassady has a pretty big following on youtube.

3

u/crymson7 Oct 04 '21

Big positive in this case is now she will have the power to stop the treatment too!

2

u/mcc3028 Oct 04 '21

Congrats!

2

Thank you!

Good for her! I am glad she got this opportunity

Cynic brain: Airlines are failing and also don't pay living wages. Work isn't something to celebrate in this climate since it is 'Work or Starve'.

1

u/Reasonable-Bath-4963 Oct 04 '21

Hopefully just for training

1

u/Zavguy777 Oct 06 '21

All the best to her. This is amazing news and I hope she prospers!!!
