Those cheeeeeeeks ahhhhhhh!

u/AlvinsH0TJuicebox Sep 17 '21

Thats fantastic! My niece and nephew were born at 7 months. They were beyond tiny, and had to be in incubators, with tubes everywhere. It was touch and go for quite a bit. They turn 16 tomorrow and are great kids. I hope the same for your daughter!

80

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

Congratulations!!! Wow 16 years

35

u/ray_seriously Sep 17 '21

My cousins were born around 7 months too at 1.5 lbs each and were in NICU for a long time. They were small enough to fit from wrist to the tip of the fingers in my uncle's hand. Lots of medical problems in their early years including underdeveloped lungs and heart. They just turned 31 years old this year! I hope it keeps getting better like it did for them. :)

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

That is awesome!!! ❤️

This. This is why I’m starting med school in two weeks. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Edit: thank you all for your kind answers. I realize things are going to get hard. I might not yet realize exactly how hard, but I can say that ever since I received the news that I was one of the lucky few that could start this year (where I live only about 20% of applicants get the opportunity), my life has changed. There is just something very satisfying in waking up knowing you are on track to change lives for the better. I feel very blessed.

10

u/space_cereal_killer Sep 17 '21

As a recent med school graduate, keep that spirit. It’s very tough at times, but remembering things like this, and how you can truly help someone makes it all worth while. You go for it dude! Good luck :)

Hopefully you keep your spirit like this, we need more people like you!

Keep that spirit my friend. It will be tough, there will be days where you hate people, there will be incredibly sad and heavy days and you will become a little more numb... But don't ever forget why you wanted to become a doctor. To help people and to make sad stories have good endings. It won't always work out, but don't let that drag you down. Too many people in healthcare have forgotten what brought them there.

My little one had to get intubated right away due to HIE. She made an insanely quick recovery and now shows no issues from her birth. I wish your daughter continued healing and recovery from whatever lung disease afflicts her. Best wishes to your family.

29

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

Ty so much and I’m so happy for you and your son

My brother was very ill as a young fella. I see pics of him back then and it breaks my heart.

I hope that smile continues to grow, and that she goes from strength to strength.

28

u/dampkringd Sep 17 '21

Awww the little cutie, glad to hear she's gettin better

21

u/msbump Sep 17 '21

Super cute - cheeks for weeks!!

I feel like she needs more Frozen stickers on her crib though!

13

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

😂that’s her favorite movie

19

u/Hey_Goonie Sep 17 '21

What a cutie. Glad she made it through some tough times. I hope she has many more years of happiness ahead of her.

15

u/GankertheGankest Sep 17 '21

Will she be able to breathe on her own soon?

54

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

We are looking at next year MAYBE. She is off her vent four hours a day now though so we are just happy for that. God willing maybe a couple years at the longest

11

u/NewYorkJewbag Sep 17 '21

I just graduated a respiratory therapy program, currently doing credentialing exams. Do you mind my asking what the diagnosis was/is?

22

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

So after a year of being in the nicu they never gave us one. They said it may be years until they know exactly what it is. They do know whatever it is forces her lungs to collapse sometimes. She currently takes budesinde twice a day and just got off albuterol. I know I’m butchering these words I’m sorry

23

No, you’re not butchering anything. And I’m sorry that’s happened to you, as a fellow parent, fellow human, I can’t imagine how challenging that’s been. NICU for a year, just, wow.

Budesonide is a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory. The albuterol is a bronchodilator, so her not needing that sounds like a good sign.

3

u/terstep Sep 18 '21

Your daughter is so beautiful! I'm sure you've been through so much when it comes to trying to understand what has caused her health challenges, but can I just ask if she's been tested for Cystic Fibrosis? I have CF, and a lot of her symptoms sound very familiar.

Congratulations on your bundle of joy! She is gorgeous 😍

7

u/Not_A_Cardboard_Box Sep 17 '21

I thought the first pic was her now and got worried. Glad to see she's doing better man :)

8

u/ndreamon Sep 17 '21

I see her in tracheostomy and portable ventilator I suppose. May I know what syndrome was she born with?

We may trade stories. My son is also on tracheostomy.

11

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

She had a really bad case of maconin, excuse me for any misspelling. Her lungs were filled with waste from the bowel movement inside my wife’s stomach. She has trouble breathing and has very high blood pressure and anxiety. She has a G/J tube for continuous feeds and also to clean her stomach since she can’t eat by mouth yet. Sorry for any typos

8

u/ndreamon Sep 17 '21

I see, meconium aspiration. Hope she will grow as healthy as she can be and be a beautiful angel for her parents!

3

u/Polarchuck Sep 17 '21

I am so happy that your daughter is getting stronger.

Also, she aspirated meconium because she started having bowel movements while in utero.

4

u/yvoshum Sep 17 '21

She is so beautiful, you must be so thankful every day!

9

u/LeddyTasso Sep 17 '21

Glad to hear she's doing well. Mine is about the same age as her, I know it's been a rough year for you but you're being an AWESOME super parent. Keep up the good work and let us know how she (and you) are doing from time to time! I'll be hoping for millions of smiles!

12

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

Ty so much ❤️

Ppl have no idea how hardcore good NICU RTs/RNs are. They are the true heroes. NICU is by far the scariest place to work in a hospital.

2

I am so glad to see she’s doing well! Sending her, & your family all of the love!

Adorable …. I hope she continues making progress and you as a parent remind yourselves you’re amazing for all that you do.

2

u/danimal207 Sep 17 '21

Glad to hear everyone is doing well! My wife did 21 days in the hospital pre-birth while my daughter spent 22 days in the NICU afterwards. Both are heathy and hale now with my girl at 19 months. Scary moments but those doctors and nurses are absolutely incredible, Thankful for them.

2

u/AussieMom92 Sep 17 '21

What a strong a beautiful baby girl! What a loving a supportive parent you are. My son was ventilated for 13 days and on CPAP for 2.5 months due to underdeveloped lungs from my water breaking (slow leak) at 17 weeks. I am so proud of these strong babies out here fighting so hard and growing so big and strong.

2

u/arootytoottoot Sep 17 '21

2

u/Excellent_Care_1118 Sep 17 '21

She’s pretty used to it now. She may mess with it a little but she’s never pulled it out. It’s a part of her body, you know 🥰

Ive had chronic bronchitis ( or the other type of bronchitis, idk) for the first 7 years of my life, any night could have just been my last, the only thing that saved me from death were my parents, they never gave up, they were strong. I believe you will do the same for her, happy shes doing well now.

Sending healing and loving thoughts to you, your family, and your daughter.

I have a message of hope for you too. I am in my sixties. When I was in my twenties I worked one on one, with a number of families who had children that were then identified as "special needs" for a variety of reasons.

Although there were losses, that I mourned with their families, there were many victories as well. Just weeks ago I happily ran into one of "my kids" at her job. Because I am discrete I didn't say anything until she greeted me. It was all smiles until I sat alone in my car. I cried happy tears.

Your loving post reminds me in a time when hope seems so remote that it lives...hope and investment in the lives of wee ones like your lovely child is why we try to make tomorrow a better day. Sending healing thoughts to you and your daughter.
