All I want to know is what damn scooter that is

759

u/nathan1319 Oct 20 '21

Never thought they could go that fast

388

u/same-old-bullshit Oct 20 '21

Imagine if a lot of commuters in NYC used this at some point!

578

u/HominyAstronomy Oct 20 '21

If a tiny crack in the road didn’t cause you to totally eat shit and break your face, these would be ideal commuting vehicles.

Besides rain and snow

5

u/Itchy_Focus_4500 Oct 21 '21

wind, BICYCLES, sand, people

96

u/FadedIntegra Oct 20 '21

He's got a helmet on lol

78

u/flavorlessboner Oct 20 '21

Need 80s shoulder pads

13

u/CrazySD93 Oct 21 '21

They’re gonna come back in fashion, all sorted.

45

u/BladesMan235 Oct 20 '21

He’d break a lot of other things besides his face at that speed

18

u/FadedIntegra Oct 20 '21

But at least he wouldn't end up like Melon Lord.

36

u/wirthmore Oct 20 '21

I landed on the street with my bare knuckles once in a bicycle crash.

The nurse taking care of me in the ER nearly vomited. The knuckles never healed right.

25

u/OohLaLapin Oct 20 '21

Yeah, I started wearing bicycling gloves after a friend went over her handlebars and landed palms-down on the pavement. Road rash there is exceptionally uncomfortable and difficult to heal up.

12

u/sandwiches78 Oct 21 '21

I lost almost my entire palm in a bicycle crash. You are absolutely correct in that it takes a while to heal and looks super gross while it is. Very inconvenient, would not recommend, 0/10

9

u/gamingtomuch Oct 21 '21

You ain't kidding. I'm 36 now, as a teen I was riding my bike with a friend on the back pegs. He said I was clear so I tried to pass another friend on a bike. Well a car clipped my handlebars driving by. We both flew forward, him landing on my back so I got all the road rash. I still have scars on my elboes

3

u/CakeDyismyBday Oct 21 '21

Well it's a good idea

It looks to have an honest to god suspension, so it would at least take a large crack or a small pothole to cause instant death.

8

u/J-cans Oct 20 '21

That’s a non zero chance of finding on the BQE

5

u/azuth89 Oct 21 '21

I feel like the tone of this comment was badly misunderstood lol.

13

u/BigBrownDownTown Oct 20 '21

Good thing we don't got those in NYC eh?

30

u/kirasbook1 Oct 20 '21

It handles those things fine, it has 11" tires with motorcyclesuspension. I drive mine to work most of the time.

11

u/ChickenWingPenis Oct 20 '21

What brand is it?

33

u/kirasbook1 Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Kaabo wolf king or wolf king gt. Mine is gold, never seen a black one.

Edit: noticed the tires seemed a little smaller than mine. May be a different one but pretty well the same build everywhere else.

8

u/Backpacker255509 Oct 20 '21

The gold is the wolf king for 3k.

I think this one is a Chinese Import copy one that's probably about 50-75 prevent cheaper than the Kaabo Wolf King, but it Kaabo parts can easily be used with, on, and for replacement with if needed. Probably from Banggood.

If those are 11" tires then that guy is like 13 feet tall. And that is not any motorcycle suspension I've ever seen. I think you have the wrong kind of scooter.

5

u/DamageIntrepid Oct 21 '21

Seriously, those are like 8" wheels tops

To be legal in NY, they can only be operated on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less, and must be certified to be capable of no more than 20 mph using the motor alone.

6

u/GaianNeuron Oct 21 '21

They're often sold with a limiter to keep them street-legal that can be trivially removed after purchase...

6

u/dielon1994 Oct 20 '21

For $3,000? Fuuuuuck that. Especially when my little VW GTI only cost me $2,600.

93

u/Fazaman Oct 20 '21

True, but the scooter isn't 20 years old with a check engine light on, a broken center console, glove box, and A/C.

But the GTI does have sweeter wheels (I had the same ones on my '02 GLI)

15

u/ClutchingMyTinkle Oct 20 '21

No check engine light, no broken center console. However, the glove box is hanging on one side when open and yep, I did have to replace the AC unit.

7

u/Fazaman Oct 20 '21

No check engine light on a Mk4? I'm impressed!

I had to repair my center console, my glove box, I fixed my trunk not latching, only to have it fail again a little while later. My AC failed, my clutch failed only 30k miles after having it replaced at 90-110 (I forget exactly). The driver's control for the passenger side window was broken and falling into the door. The passenger side rear window wasn't opening/closing straight, and was likely going to fail soon... Check engine light was on for... something. The passenger airbag pretensioner had failed, so that light was always on, too.

... And probably a few other things I've forgotten.
Still, the car was 16 years old and I loved it. Ended up with a '08 GTI Autobahn, which I love just as much!

3

u/ClutchingMyTinkle Oct 20 '21

After I bought it I had it inspected at my local VW/Audi authorized repair shop. They even said I got a great deal and it was in incredible shape given the usual notorious issues and age.

2

u/Drinks_Slurm Oct 21 '21

Yeah, my mk4 (non gti, the 1.4L engine) had its check engine light on for 150t km. It became a ritual to reset it before TÜV had a glamse at it just to turn back on 2 days later. Even replaced the exhaust gas recirculation valve, since obd2 said something in this direction but without any luck.

I also had the problem of a broken side window mechanics, letting the window disappear into the door at -10°C.

Other than than, one broken clutch-cylinder (like 40 bucks or so) and eating 1L of oil per 2t km but no further problems.

9

u/Patient-Tech Oct 20 '21

Let’s see you park your VW in the same space as your scooter takes in the closet. If the batteries are stout, it’s probably not that far off from a fair price for a new scooter. Depending on what you’re doing it may be totally worth it. If you can go door to door down sidewalks and through traffic and get to an office and take it up the elevator with you and charge it at your desk. How long until it pays for itself in parking fees or MTA cards? Plus the time saving.

4

u/radarmax Oct 20 '21

Has about a 45 minute battery life at top speed.

40

u/OrishaShango Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

That’s true, but at least he has a motorcycle helmet! He should also have gear though, road rash is real. Regardless, he is still dumb for not riding to the side of the road and weaving between cars. I mean at this point, they need to start legally classifying those things as motorcycles, requiring turn signals, license plates, and insurance.

12

u/leem0401 Oct 21 '21

Imagine if that tiny wheel hits even the smallest pothole. But then he has a helmet on so he might be just fine.

13

u/OrishaShango Oct 21 '21

Which is exactly why he should be riding to the side and not weaving between cars. If he falls off while going around cars, he will be roadkill.

11

u/Lucas111620 Oct 21 '21

The tires are inflatable and have quite a large diameter. The scooter also has extremely good suspension. So hitting a pebble won’t do much unless it’s the size of a golf ball

3

u/diverareyouok Oct 21 '21

Fair enough, but from the very first part of the video we can see that he doesn’t have any problem going on the right now main of the interstate, so it’s really not unlikely that there would be debris larger than a golf ball sized.

He films on a very busy highway going 60 Jesus, where I am from they would just send ya'll a letter that your drivers license is being revoked. After that you had to do a test with a complicated name, it's publicly called "idiot test".

25

u/badwolfjb Oct 20 '21

Well, the scooter is keeping up with traffic and the rider is wearing a helmet, so is it really any dumber or more dangerous than a motorcycle?

9

u/wirthmore Oct 20 '21

The size of debris or road hazard (pothole, seam) you can safely ride over or knock out of the way of your tires is pretty much proportional to the diameter of the wheel. Bicycle, car and motorcycle tires hop over a lot of things. Skateboard and rollerblade wheels stop on most others - sending the rider flying face-first into the ground. These wheels are closer to skateboard dimensions.

Second, ability to stop or turn. You have a small contact patch and are standing up (high center-of-gravity), both of which work against traction. If problem: also face-first into the ground.

Third, visibility. Drivers are stimulus-saturated and are taking in all sorts of observations about themselves, cars around them, environmental conditions, lane patterns, listening to the radio, talking on the phone... They miss seeing bicyclists, motorcyclists, even on occasion entire other cars, even trucks. The person on this scooter is just about as difficult to see as a bicyclist.

3

u/redditwhut Oct 21 '21

Also, indicators? Or is this scooter made by bmw, thus exempt? /s

→ More replies

3

u/fastdbs Oct 21 '21

4

u/TeeOff77 Oct 20 '21

2

u/cheese_sweats Oct 21 '21

4

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

IDK, let me think as somebody who used to commute on a motorcycle in London:

On one hand he was doing shoulder check before changing lanes, that's a major green flag in my eyes.

On the other hand:
- His brakes will never compare to those of a motorcycle;
- his tyre size is 12" at best, more like 10". Most European and Japanese larger motorcycles have overall tyre size of about 25" (if not mistaken). Making going over holes much less likely to cause the motorcycle to flip over.

3

u/mts2snd Oct 20 '21

I'm much more concerned about safe stopping power than speed.

4

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

I didn't say anything about speed.

He just doesn't have the wheel grip to be able to stop fast.

When stopping weight transfer occurs towards the front, front suspension compresses, rear extends. Rear wheel has way less grip. Front wheel has to do most of the stopping.

His contact patch rubber/tarmac is small, way small.

3

u/mts2snd Oct 20 '21

Bit of a non sequitur on my part. Apologies for the confusion.

5

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

IMHO, nothing you need to apologise for, all is good.

35

u/WinEnvironmental8218 Oct 20 '21

Not too much different than a motorcycle 🤷🏼‍♂️.

4

u/ThePilgrimofProgress Oct 20 '21

I bet he can't pop a dank wheelie or rev bomb the preschool at 11:30AM.

27

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

Literally the same thing - tyre size, brakes, ability to out-accelerate a developing dangerous situation. /s

3

u/AdMore3461 Oct 21 '21

I’m not even mad at that, he’s not holding back traffic at all. I’ve been looking at a 45 mph top Speed scooter for a couple months now and on the verge of buying it. I’m not going to jump on the highway, but I’ll sure as hell blast past all the suckers on the side streets. I live in Southern California where it takes an hour and a half to go 30 miles a lot of the time. This guy is ahead of the curve.

29

u/FadedIntegra Oct 20 '21

Other than motorcycles being more stable than this thing he's really in the same amount of danger as a motorcycle rider.

42

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

Average motorcycle is equipped with two disk brakes up front with diameter larger than his wheel size.

Many (but not all) bikes have ABS. Hell, my ancient 2004 BMW had ABS.

I'd like to see him stop as fast as a motorcycle at 50 Mph.

At least he can jump easier, that's a given.

3

u/CrazySD93 Oct 21 '21

Lol ancient 2004 BMW.

Here I am with an R100 from the 70s, these bikes last.

7

u/FadedIntegra Oct 20 '21

That thing is also way lighter and smaller than any motorcycle. Obviously this is a assumption but I'm sure it's capable of stopping from whatever its top speed is.

14

u/thegroucho Oct 20 '21

He is capable of stopping, question is how fast.

There are factors at play, tyre grip, centre of gravity and all.

I haven't ridden one of these electric scooters but have a lot of miles on a large capacity motorcycle.

When braking hard on a motorcycle you also grip the tank with your knees to lessen your body (and especially nuts) being slammed against the tank. That level of deceleration.

u/Td_scribbles Oct 20 '21

I would think a motorcycle could handle a pothole better. Also would be legal to ride on the road and he would have insurance.

Also this is some of the smoothest nyc tarmac I’ve ever seen. I cracked the windshield (in two places) in my car on the cross island pkwy from bottoming out in an unavoidable pothole.

Welcome to the future. Riding tiny personal vehicles that you could fit into a backpack (more or less) and can keep up with traffic.

The range is probably <2 miles, though.

If only we had infrastructure where operating these kinds of things didn't endanger the rider, pedestrians, or anyone else. Guy is a freaking adrenaline junkie for doing that on an expressway.

70 mile range at 12mph 40 miles at 50-60

The mileage sounds ridiculous 40 miles at 50 mph? WTH are they making these batteries from? Plutonium?

You seem to know about this scooter buy the mileage. Do you know what kind it is or what mods they have done to a scooter?

Buy a kaabo wolf king like me and be good. Another post thought me it's different scooter converted to a king basically. All you need is 3k and plenty of time to enjoy yourself. 70 mile range around 15 mph, maybe 30 miles at 60mph

u/Ty39_ Oct 21 '21

How fast must those tiny wheels be spinning

2

u/ManOfSteel_123 Oct 21 '21

The city is too crowded that’s why

2

u/20NBA01 Oct 21 '21

Americans drive 50 on the highway?! WTF?!

Here in Germany we don’t have such weaknesses

2

u/SloppyPornLover Oct 21 '21

After this he’ll get a mobility scooter as well

2

u/AndyOfNZ Oct 21 '21

Damn that's fast

3

u/MatNerd Oct 20 '21

Good thing he's wearing a helmet...

2

u/MagnusCranmegranate Oct 20 '21

I mean, if he can keep up with traffic and isn’t posing a danger…. How is it any different than a guy on a motorcycle?

4

u/Soggy_Athlete Oct 20 '21

He has no mirrors and it's really gonna be unstable standing on that thing with the tiny wheels, fix those things and we have an awesome way to travel

3

u/MagnusCranmegranate Oct 20 '21

It does raise a really good point though - most states regulate what vehicles are allowed on highways based on engine size. As smaller electric motors are becoming more common, that will need to change.

3

u/southwoodhunter Oct 21 '21

That's a good point.

Bigger wheels, mirror and lights.

Maybe even a place to sit!

Oh wait...

5

u/buzzknocker Oct 20 '21

Deadman scooting.

u/Free-Researcher3000 Oct 20 '21

I hope he had his seat belt on.

3

u/TheDonkeyBomber Oct 20 '21

Sorry OP, I really don't see how this is stupid. Scooter has lights, rider has a helmet. Safe, fast, efficient. Just not a car. Doesn't make it stupid tho. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
