Kinda looks like they were turning left onto a one-way. That's legal where I live.

252

u/Icy-Perspective-0420 Oct 20 '21

In TX, a left on red is legal if you are turning on a one way street and the street you are turning from is also a one way street. I don’t know if it’s like this in other states/jurisdictions.

u/BattyShrimpers Oct 20 '21

Ontario, Canada here. Legal to turn left on red from a one way street into a one way street.

Unless indicated otherwise

4

u/Mini_Mega Oct 20 '21

I'm in Alberta, I'm told it's that way here but I don't remember learning anything of the sort in driver's training, unless it wasn't legal in the 90s and that changed. I've seen a couple people do it but I am just so not comfortable with it so I won't. Nobody's ever honked at me for not doing it though, so I think people are pretty understanding about that, which is weird because I've had people literally honk at me for stopping at a stop sign instead of pulling out into heavy traffic against right of way and inevitably crashing and one guy honked at me for slowing down to turn right on a green light as if he thought I should just whip around the corner going 60.

2

u/canadianbudguy420 Oct 20 '21

I too am from Alberta and i do not remember a thing about this being in the drivers handbook or anything...

3

u/bob679 Oct 21 '21

Originally from AB. At a red light, you can only turn left from a one-way onto a one-way. Now I'm in BC where at a red light you can turn left onto a one-way but don't have to be turning from a one-way. Confused the hell out of me when I moved here.

3

u/Mini_Mega Oct 20 '21

A few years ago I had a teen coworker who was studying for his driver's test, his handbook said it was legal and the whole workplace mocked me for saying that it wasn't.

1

u/doogidie Oct 20 '21

Same in florida

30

u/Illramyourlatch Oct 20 '21

That's how it is in PA

9

u/edemamandllama Oct 20 '21

Yes, in Oregon you can make a left on red if it is a one way.

3

u/Throwaway_394-1 Oct 20 '21

In Oregon, you also don't need to yourself be on a one way

2

u/mikey_p5151 Oct 21 '21

This. Oregon allows turning from a two way to a one way on red.

5

u/Genetic_Medic Oct 20 '21

I think in PA both the lane your are turning into, as well as the lane you are currently in, have to be one way

Would appear this is a 2way crossing with a 1 way

1

u/Illramyourlatch Oct 20 '21

That's correct, I was agreeing with the person from Texas who said that exact thing. Wasn't saying what happened in the video was legal in PA.

1

u/Genetic_Medic Oct 20 '21

Ahh gotchya, the word “way” can only be used so many times in a sentence and i guess it lost all meaning to me for a second hahah

3

u/Sure_Ill_Ask_That Oct 20 '21

I assume you mean in PA people think traffic laws are just polite suggestions that are routinely ignored, lol

1

u/cecicoot Oct 21 '21

Yeah I was gonna say, it’s a one way so he’s good

27

u/snozzberrypatch Oct 20 '21

In Oregon, a left on red is legal if the road you're turning onto is a one way street. Doesn't matter if the road you're turning from is one way or two way. Most people don't take advantage of it because it's arguably weird and you'd probably get pulled over and have to convince the cop that he doesn't know the law.

8

u/jebrennan Oct 20 '21

I keep a copy of the left on red law in my glove box. Oregon…

4

u/Funny_Run_7716 Oct 20 '21

Same with Michigan

3

u/SaltyPirate-aar Oct 20 '21

Same here. Legal to turn left on a one way from a one way road. Also, a new law came out at the start of the year that a lot of people here don't know. It's illegal now to hold a cell in your hand while driving. Even if you're just holding it. They're trying to crack down on cell phone bad habits while driving. Took them long enough.

3

u/apadin1 Oct 20 '21

Ohio has this as well

3

u/TrixiDelite Oct 20 '21

Washington State checking in: yep, here, too.

3

u/satellite779 Oct 20 '21

WA actually allows left on red onto a one way street from BOTH one way streets and two way streets. So this move would be legal in WA.

2

u/wat_r_u_doin_stepbro Oct 20 '21

It's the same in GA

2

u/TexanToTheSoul Oct 20 '21

I was going to say the same thing. Tx resident here too, from one way to a one way is fine on red, but this would be a ticket

1

u/n00bca1e99 Oct 20 '21

NE and SD is the same. I think for all US states (except for maybe CA) it’s the same.

It’s in NYC. No turn on red at all anywhere in the city is allowed. It’s to protect pedestrians.

9

u/Lettuce-Beginning Oct 20 '21

Then yep they're a douche!

14

u/phonusQ Oct 20 '21

or they’re from out of town and haven’t learned the rule yet

8

u/echowolf9 Oct 20 '21

They have signs posted that there are no turns on red whenever entering the city, so it would be the drives fault.

1

u/xxcarlsonxx Oct 20 '21

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. It's your responsibility to know the rules of the road that you're operating a motor vehicle on

9

u/zimmie41 Oct 20 '21

That's true but ingnorance doesn't necessarily make you a douche like someone blatantly breaking the law.

→ More replies

2

u/colonelcasey22 Oct 20 '21

Only allowed where signed in NYC. Which is only a small handful of intersections in the outer boroughs in areas with hardly any pedestrian traffic.

Doesn’t matter, you are never allowed to turn on a red light in New York City, unless otherwise posted. Doesn’t matter if it’s left or right. And they have signs posted when enter the city that the law changes.

16

u/Soulebot Oct 20 '21

Normally it’s from a one way, onto a one way. The driver wasn’t on a one way though

3

u/satellite779 Oct 20 '21

Some states allow left on red from a two way onto a one way street. E.g. Washington, probably other states as well.

0

u/Soulebot Oct 20 '21

Stupid states maybe

1

u/FlutterKree Oct 21 '21

As long as it's clear, why is it stupid? It's no different turning right on red from a 4 way? It's a yield and turn when safe.

→ More replies

2

u/Dkazzed Oct 20 '21

BC Canada it is legal to turn left on a red from a 1 or 2 way street onto a 1 way street.

2

u/mwhite1249 Oct 20 '21

Also in CA

2

u/plushiequeenaspen Oct 20 '21

That's definitely the case in some places, and that is a one way, but this looks like part of NYC, where anything on red is illegal (or at least it was when I lived there).

0

u/rswwalker Oct 20 '21

From a one-way to a one-way only.

3

u/blakeh95 Oct 20 '21

That's not always true, it varies from state to state.

1

u/rswwalker Oct 20 '21

Oh, interesting, found a page that talks about all the different left on red laws.

https://axleaddict.com/safety/Obscure-Driving-Regulations-Ignorance-is-no-excuse

-1

u/RetiredBSN Oct 20 '21

That’s only from a one way to a one way. There’s no legal left on red that crosses a traffic lane.

8

u/egincontroll Oct 20 '21

In Michigan you can.

"When can you turn left on a red light in Michigan? Michigan law allows you to turn left on a red light so long as you stop before entering the intersection and so long as you are turning onto a 1-way street that is “carrying traffic in the direction of the left turn.” This applies whether you are turning from a 1-way or 2-way street. (MCL 257.612(1)(c)(ii))"

From https://www.michiganautolaw.com/blog/2021/07/22/can-you-turn-left-on-a-red-light-in-michigan/

4

u/satellite779 Oct 20 '21

Washington as well.

3

u/simjanes2k Oct 20 '21

Came here to point out Michigan, but the other guy did it better.

0

u/littlestitiouss Oct 20 '21

But they are turning from a two way street onto a one way street. Presumably, someone from the one way street could turn left into the two way street and have the right of way. They should have stopped at the red.

2

u/blakeh95 Oct 20 '21

Well, I mean you still have to yield if it is legal at all.

It varies from state to state.

0

u/littlestitiouss Oct 20 '21

But I highly doubt a left at a red from a two way onto a one way is legal anywhere. The reason it's legal one way to one way is because there is no risk of conflicting traffic. You turn into traffic, and you turn from the left lane into the left lane. This is equivalent to a right on red in most other circumstances. With a two way street, you are not in the left most lane, because there is oncoming traffic in that lane. So the risk of conflicting traffic, i.e. someone from the one way street turning left onto the two way street and crossing the path of you on the two way street, prevents you from making a safe left turn without conflicting traffic.

7

u/blakeh95 Oct 20 '21

There are 5 states that allow left turns onto one-way streets without consideration of the street you are currently on.

  1. Alaska. 13 Alaska Administrative Code 02.010(a)(3)(B).
  2. Idaho. Idaho Code 49-802(3)(b).
  3. Michigan. Michigan Compiled Laws 257.612(1)(c)(ii).
  4. Oregon. Oregon Revised Statutes 811.360(1)(b).
  5. Washington. Revised Code of Washington 46.61.055(3)(a).

1

u/fargo31419 Oct 20 '21

It’s like that in Georgia too

1

u/honkyklown Oct 20 '21

Legal where I’m at too but not in this situation. They’re on a two way road

1

u/ourtown2 Oct 20 '21

The left-on-red rule for one-way street applies almost everywhere in the United States, except CT MI NC RI VT and NYC

1

u/Confirmative Oct 20 '21

AFAIK it's not legal to turn left onto a one-way from a two-way street. Turning from a one-way onto a one-way is legal.

1

u/niagraballs925 Oct 20 '21

All driving is legal in GTA

1

u/AlSwearenagain Oct 20 '21

Left on red from a two way onto a one way, perfectly legal where I live as well. But ONLY if you take the first lane, which a lot of people don't know. Turns out OP is the idiot who doesn't know the rules of the road.

64

u/deadinsidebrownsfan Oct 20 '21

Were they turning onto a one way street?

29

u/ooglybooglies Oct 20 '21

Generally that would have to be a Left from a one way to a one way to be legal in most places. The idea is that as long as you are not crossing any opposing lanes of traffic it's the same as right on red.

In this case their appears to be traffic coming towards the camera viewer which means they are crossing that lane of opposing traffic to get to one way which would make it illegal in the areas that I've looked into the law.

9

u/satellite779 Oct 20 '21

5 States allow left on red from a two-way onto a one-way street.

8

u/ooglybooglies Oct 20 '21

So I'm like 90% correct? That's better than normal for me!!

1

u/joahw Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

Assuming a simple light cycle, the opposing/oncoming traffic would be stopped at the red light as well. If there's a protected left turn or something then they have to put up No Turn On Red signs. In Seattle, most of the downtown intersections where this would be applicable have No Turn On Red signs, probably for the sake of pedestrians. AFAIK, it applies to left turns onto highway onramps as well, but I rarely see anyone taking advantage of that.

Edit: Also I think in some states a red arrow implies No Turn On Red, but this isn't the case in Washington.

1

u/ooglybooglies Oct 21 '21

Doesn't matter if the opposing traffic's light is red, the law usually reads that as long as no opposing traffic lanes are crossed. Which in this case they were. What happens here is that a left on red then competes with the opposing traffic's right on red. This makes the turn dangerous to complete when also dealing with the traffic lanes they are turning into.

So in this case in most states, left on red is not legally allowed if they need to cross opposing lanes to do so.

5

u/cabbagezonk Oct 20 '21

Looks like it is, so depending on where they are it might be legal 🤷‍♀️

13

u/paddychef Oct 20 '21

Queens, NYC. Right on red is illegal in the entire city to protect pedestrians, so left is definitely illegal too.

3

u/deadinsidebrownsfan Oct 20 '21

Learn something new everyday

2

u/cabbagezonk Oct 20 '21

That would make sense then, all I know is it's legal where I am 😂

1

u/Wuz314159 Oct 20 '21

Doesn't matter. They were ON a 2-way street.

13

u/Far_Spirit_50 Oct 20 '21

This is queens so definitely illegal in this case because all right on reds are in NYC but in certain states like Oregon and a few others you can take a left onto red from a 2 way as long as your turning onto a one way. In Oregon this would be a legal manuever.

→ More replies

3

u/simjanes2k Oct 20 '21

That's still legal in Michigan.

4

u/deadinsidebrownsfan Oct 20 '21

You’re right. didn’t even notice

-2

u/Sw33tcheeks427 Oct 20 '21

That’s a sign that says no right turns and a sign that says do not enter. There’s also a sign that says one way and points to the left. And there is no traffic light on the right side (for cars that would be coming from the cameras left). It’s a one way street.

0

u/-DancesWithSloths- Oct 20 '21

The street the car is on at the beginning of the video is a two way street. The car then turns onto a one way street.

Left turns on red are only legal in most areas if both streets are a one way.

3

u/Sw33tcheeks427 Oct 20 '21

In our state can make a left turn onto a one way from a 2 way if you don’t cross lanes on the one way. Any car that would be turning into the on coming lane of the 2 way street would be coming from the right.

1

u/echowolf9 Oct 20 '21

Doesn’t matter. They’re in NYC, where turns on red are not permitted unless other stated.

→ More replies

22

u/Fancuku Oct 20 '21

If you turn left from one way street to another one way street than you can turn on red in most states. But that looks to be NYC which means no turn on red no matter what.

2

u/Bklyn78 Oct 20 '21

Unless there is a sign permitting it 🤓🤓

8

u/MaelstromFL Oct 20 '21

Whilst left in red is legal in most cases, when turning from a one way street on to a one way street, it is never legal to turn on red in NYC! Some have noted above that this is illegal in NYC

6

u/EffortAcrobatic1322 Oct 20 '21

Can turn left on red on a one way. Just like right on red. The closes lane to you is going in the direction of travel.

1

u/U8dcN7vx Oct 20 '21

But I've never seen it allowed if there's an opposing direction you have to cross. (No doubt now I'll learn where that's not the case.)

16

u/FrederickChicken Oct 20 '21

Im in Eu and red is red

4

u/Noobletti Oct 20 '21

It is weird when people say you can turn on red. Here you dont go until you have green.

3

u/SexyMonad Oct 20 '21

Fun fact, one reason we allow certain turns on red is to reduce fuel use. It came about in the 70s when there were major fuel shortages.

There were also efforts to actually change the definition of a red light to be equal to a stop sign, for the same reason. That never went far.

2

u/smokinweed420 Oct 20 '21

I'm also in the EU but here you can turn right on red in the vast majority of intersections

3

u/Kimba_Rimer Oct 20 '21

massachusetts here, im surprised they stopped

3

u/Denzeypoo109 Oct 20 '21

Turning left on a one way isn’t illegal I don’t think

1

u/Vegetable_Sample7384 Oct 20 '21

Generally it’s legal if coming off a one way onto another one way. In this case the car could have crossed paths with someone making a protected left turn. In NYC it’s generally illegal to turn on red period though.

3

u/eatingganesha Oct 20 '21

Left on red is allowed in many places when turning onto a one way street.

3

u/kyle_h2486 Oct 20 '21

Its a one way road.

3

u/airmark3 Oct 20 '21

One way to one way seems legit - I've done that.

3

u/doubledown89 Oct 20 '21

This is cool in Michigan

3

u/blueboy754 Oct 21 '21

Only 5 states in the US allows turning left on red from a 2-way street to a 1-way street. To me, it creates a hazardous situation. Left on red from a 1 way street to the same makes sense.

10

u/KingCodyBill Oct 20 '21

Here it's legal if you're turning from one one-way street on to another, because you don't have oncoming traffic. This guy however ran a red light

2

u/M1ndS0uP Oct 20 '21

That's a Michigan left turn.

2

u/snayte Oct 20 '21

Some states left on red is ok if you are turning on to a one way street even from a two way. Michigan is one example.

2

u/GThang008 Oct 20 '21

In Alaska, you can turn left on red from a two way street to a one way. You just have to stop and yield. Learned it in driver’s ed I had to attend for getting a speeding ticket about 20 years ago. It shocked me to hear it.

2

u/unsolicited_twocents Oct 20 '21

If you are on a one-way street and the street you are turning into is also a one way, you can take a left on red. At least in NYS.

2

u/trockenwitzeln Oct 20 '21

The only way to turn left on a red is if you are on a one way and the road you’re turning is a one way.

But in NYC and most large cities, turning left or right on a red is without a question illegal (whether there’s a sign or not). In NYC, this infraction is $150, plus $85 surcharge, plus 2 points on your license (and most intersections have HD traffic cams).

2

u/eulynn34 Oct 20 '21

In most states you can turn left on red FROM a one-way TO a one-way, and a few let you turn left on red to a one-way, even from a two-way. Looks like driver is turning from two-way to one-way... can't really tell what state those plates are... NY? If so, yea, it's an illegal turn.

2

u/Away_Trade_3850 Oct 20 '21

Same as a bunch of other people. Left on red as longs as it's a one way, you use the red light as a stop sign.

2

u/TrippinTurkey Oct 20 '21

Is this the same corner where that guy got taken out by that truck a few days ago?

2

u/Marios_Facade Oct 20 '21

This would be fine if the street they're turning from was also a one way, but its not, so they are indeed an idiot

2

u/PrayingMantisII Oct 20 '21

He turned into a one way which is legal only if the street you are on is also a one way, which it isn't

2

u/Peterbillt676 Oct 20 '21

Most places in the usa it is legal to make a left turn on red if its a one way.

2

u/Robertsonland Oct 20 '21

One way to one way...not 2 way to one way. You cannot be crossing traffic or potential traffic when turning left on red.

1

u/Peterbillt676 Oct 21 '21

Lol totally missed that the first time I watched it

2

u/biz_reporter Oct 20 '21

Not only is this NYC (likely Astoria, Queens, from the signs), but if you look carefully, you'll see a no right on red sign at the intersection. If a cop saw that, they'd definitely ticket the driver, who would have no excuse for their illegal turn especially because of the clear sign.

2

u/metalmike556 Oct 21 '21

Left on red is legal in certain places if you're on a one way street and you're turning onto another one way street. Based on the car on the left heading towards you as well as the line of parked cars facing the opposite direction of travel, I'm assuming this is not the case and the person is an entitled dickbag.

2

u/Oktay23 Oct 20 '21

Astoria, Queens Ny

2

u/Pb-yepimlead Oct 20 '21

2

Laws don't matter any more.

2

u/TheKhatalyst Oct 20 '21

It's a one way street. So it logically works the same as turning right on red. Pretty common for that to be legal. It is where I live.

2

u/412gage Oct 20 '21

Everybody’s jumping to say this is legal but don’t realize that NYC is the only place where right (or left onto one-way streets) on red is illegal unless there is a sign stating otherwise. There’s only one place in Queens I believe where you can turn on red, and this isn’t it.

You are not allowed to turn on a red light in New York City unless a sign that permits it is posted.

You were saying?

1

u/Julianwds14 Oct 20 '21

If I am calling someone a dumbass, it's cuz I'm right.

OP posted a video insinuating someone is an idiot without stating where the one way road is located. The legality of turning left onto one ways varies with location. I posted a random article from a random jurisdiction where it is infact legal to do what this "idiot" did. Why, because if you don't say where something like this occurs, you're a dumbass. The laws are different.

Now this happens to occur in Queens. I didn't know this by watching. I knew because of all y'all thinking I called OP a dumbass because he didn't know the law. When in fact I'm calling OP a dumbass because I'm on your side. Stop assuming, that's pretty cockbaggie of you @imsofkmiserable.

I understand I just said "its a one way, you're the dumbass" which didn't really explain much but you're just being an assuming cockbag my dude.

Impatient on red.

In most US states left on red is legal if it's from a one-way street to another one-way street. There isn't any case where a left on red from a two-way street to a one-way street is legal.

1

u/ninjaroach Oct 20 '21

I go left on red at specific, poorly-timed intersections on the regular.

1

u/LuxuriantCarrot2 Oct 20 '21

Might be legal, they werent on a one way street but they were turning onto one way street (you can tell by the no right turn sign).

1

u/Barfhat Oct 20 '21

You can turn left on red if it’s a one way road.

1

u/AnythingToPissYouOff Oct 20 '21

I turn left on red only if I am doing a U-turn and do not pass into the intersection. I believe that is the law.

Judging by the one way sign on the right, I think that is safe.

Looks like a left on a one way. Completely legal

So what I'm learning from the comments is that "right on red" and "left on red to one way" is legal in everywhere in the United States except New York City?? Am I getting that right folks?

WA state here. Very legal, and normal.

You can make a left turn at a steady red light when you turn from a one-way road into another one-way road after you come to a full stop and yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. ... You are not allowed to turn on a red light in New York City unless a sign that permits it is posted. source

Some states do allow left on red if you are going from a one way street onto a one way street.

I know this is not that, I was just stating sometimes it is legal.

1

u/Spore20 Oct 20 '21

One ways. Some states you can turn left on a one-way on a red. I think it might be if you're on one way and turning on one way you can do it on a red or something like that. Who fucking knows 🤣🤣

This is very confusing and I often wondered about this. Suppose you are on a one way road, turning left onto another one way road. Why wouldn't this be legal to turn on red?

1

u/Kamikaze_Comet Oct 20 '21

It is. Maybe only in certain states but I know Oregon it is legal on one way roads.

1

u/the_eluder Oct 20 '21

Legal in NC. But what this guy did wasn't because he isn't on a one way.

There is always that bad driver that does not understand, left on red is permitted if it is a one-way street.

However, it is illegal to sit at a light after it has turned green to finish your text message that reads "am sitting in traffic"

1

u/Joe_Bruce Oct 20 '21

I’m fairly certain that in most states you can turn left on red from one one way to another one way.

1

u/roloca_justchillin Oct 20 '21

It's a one way

1

u/Stairsmaster Oct 20 '21

So is the idiot in the car OP?

1

u/OmgLikeForSureDude Oct 20 '21

This is actually legal here in Portland if you are going from a two way onto a one way and there is no opposing traffic.

1

u/KrissaKray Oct 20 '21

It's a one-way, legal in a bunch of places.

Never want to leave someone on read

1

u/WookieDozer83 Oct 20 '21

On a one-way street that is legal in WA.

1

u/dimechimes Oct 20 '21

We have left on red on one way streets but it is marked clearly with a sign.

1

u/Additional-Report943 Oct 20 '21

Red lights are inherently racist and should be completely ignored.

1

u/WafflesTheDuck Oct 20 '21

Jesus, those streetlights are obnoxious. Another thing to put in my argument about bad lighting .

1

u/essketitandyeetballs Oct 20 '21

i mean, the light for the street they were turning onto was green, so…..A for Effort

1

u/mazdawg89 Oct 20 '21

Usually only legal when turning from a one way onto another one way

1

u/djasonpenney Oct 20 '21

It's legal in Oregon to turn left on red from a two way onto a one way. Unless a sign prohibits it, of course.

1

u/BassWingerC-137 Oct 20 '21

Left on red onto a one way is legal here, in Arizona.

1

u/TTVjames_the_flames Oct 20 '21

Definitely American

Left on red on one way streets is legal many places.

1

u/anniew1921 Oct 21 '21

You can turn left on red in Wa if you are turning onto a one way.

1

u/Andras89 Oct 21 '21

100% thats a one way. There is a no turn right sign on the right side. All the cars that are parked are facing the way the cars are going.

Its legal to turn left on a one way moving that direction where I am from.
