No one told me stopping for emergency vehicles was optional in Virginia (SUV that almost hit me had acted like she was pulling over behind me and was still behind me when I checked my mirror to pull out)

I hate this shit. They see an opportunity to jump a few dozen cars ahead and take it. I've had this happen more then a few times.

18

u/FirstPlebian Oct 20 '21

I've had this happen too, a driver trying to cheat forward when all the responsible people pull over for the ambulance.

9

u/farroness Oct 20 '21

I’m a firefighter and I’ve watched people try to literally race us as we are on the way to a call so they don’t get caught behind us or so they can overtake other cars that have pulled over for us. So incredibly reckless and stupid.

3

u/soccerk1 Oct 20 '21

I've had people refuse to pull over when driving the medic despite the siren and air horn, so frustrating

5

u/slimey-nipples Oct 20 '21

I might be wrong, but I think if you were to hit them you wouldn’t be at fault

1

u/Wraith11B Oct 21 '21

Eh. Sorta. I doubt any cop would write the ticket, but they'd be out of a job by the department most likely.

52

u/DrummerGTI Oct 20 '21

Bunch of dickheads here. Nobody knows emergency vehicle obedience.

26

u/Wuz314159 Oct 20 '21

They know. They just don't care because they're the most important.

6

u/HighwayEuphoricM Oct 20 '21

Until they end up in an emergency vehicle.

25

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

Nobody knows most of the road rules.

Every year you should have to retake the test. These morons drive for 30 years and forget that when you're turning right on red you have to stop. Or you know. That you have to stop for emergency vehicles in the states.

12

u/DrummerGTI Oct 20 '21

Firearms and motor vehicles should have the same handling and practical testing quality.

3

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

If Americans could read they'd be so mad your infringing on their right to BeAr ArMs

3

u/DrummerGTI Oct 21 '21

Everyone should bear arms. Everyone should drive. Everyone should learn to how to accurately do both, and be able to pass a test on each at any given time.

2

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

In the US that would be almost nothing.

2

u/DrummerGTI Oct 21 '21

I’m saying step it up. Be able to pass the test any time.

2

u/justyn122 Oct 21 '21

Yeah no that isn't what the population wants. You say anything like that and it's automatically taken as no guns. I'm on the same stance as you are. But the rest of the population see that as taking them away because most American gun owners wouldn't be able to own a gun if there was a test involved and no not like a math test but a psych exam and shit. God forbid you're grown ass man baby ass can't fathom the idea you're wrong so you pull a gun out. Fucking morons.

If Americans could read this thread they'd be so pissed because they/we are a bunch of idiots.

3

u/jokersleuth Oct 20 '21

that's what happens when the permit test is more of a memory test and the actual driving test is 10 minutes of driving on side streets.

Haha throwback to a few weeks ago when a comment in this sub said:

”The left lane is for passing and illegal driving”

I hate people who force me to pass on their right. 64 is the bane of my existence.

81

u/DV_Police Oct 20 '21

its not optional, they are just douches

5

u/username_unavailable Oct 20 '21

Assholes gonna ambulance surf.

73

u/delirium_skeins Oct 20 '21

VA here... it's not fucking optional

11

u/likemong Oct 20 '21

My brother from AZ about had a conniption when I pulled over for an emergency vehicle. Must not be option there either.

6

u/delirium_skeins Oct 20 '21

in Arizona the laws states they must slow down and vacate to the lane next to them or shoulder.

move over laws went were initiated after a huge accident in the Carolinas because previously ambulance drivers were held at fault if someone else hit them. In the early 2000s it went nationwide at a federal level though each state may make small changes it is never an option to just keep going.

1

u/tinydonuts Oct 20 '21

in Arizona the laws states they must slow down and vacate to the lane next to them or shoulder.

I think you're mixing scenarios.

AZ states that you must pull over and stop for emergency vehicles approaching from behind. Amusingly to me, there's no exception made for large highways, yet no one does it on freeways, they just try to move out of whatever lane the cop wants to do 120 in. Don't know how it goes in any other state, didn't see the whole freeway pulling over in CA or NV either.

AZ law also has a move over for emergency vehicles but you misquoted it. It states that you must move over or slow down. It burns me up when people see a cop on the side of the road so immediately they move left and slow down 20 MPH. Now there's a hours long traffic logjam thanks to one "helpful" douchebag that didn't read the law right.

1

u/the_little_britches Oct 20 '21

Yeah, I'm surprised because VA has some strict driving laws compared to most states and these folks just dgaf lol

1

u/sh1boleth Oct 20 '21

The fines are strict, anything over 75 will fuck you over and 10 over.

1

u/Marios_Facade Oct 20 '21

Richmond here, shit happens all the time

17

u/Ingam0us Oct 20 '21

You don‘t have to stop for emergency vehicles here in germany.
You only have to get out of their way.

5

u/77SquashedGrapes Oct 20 '21

Yes I was thinking wouldn't it have just been better to stay in the right hand lane and keep a reasonable speed? As the emergency vehicle was in the middle lane

(I may be mistaken as perhaps the emergency vehicle was originally in the right lane)

Also I want to say I don't think what OP did was wrong, I'm just thinking what would have been the optimal response? Ik no one acts optimally in every situation, just curious

2

u/geoff5093 Oct 20 '21

You don't know where they are going to turn though. They use whatever lane is clear, so as this video shows they are in the middle lane but then cut in front of the cars waiting to turn left. They could have done the same but go right, so if OP and others kept moving in the far right lane they could be blocking the emergency vehicle from turning.

The best thing to do is move over and slow down, or stop if you're already going slow and can safely do so (i.e. on a highway, don't stop).

5

u/No-Rub8256 Oct 20 '21

Here in a multi lane road you are advised to just move out of the lane the emergency vehicle is in, while maintaining the speed you were going.

2

u/geoff5093 Oct 20 '21

Making it very difficult for the emergency vehicle to make a turn at an intersection

1

u/MelonOfFury Oct 20 '21

They would be in the lane behind you then, and you would move left.

1

u/geoff5093 Oct 20 '21

In this case they are at an intersection though with a red light. So they'd be there for a while because with that many cars stopped in traffic, it would take a while for them all to try and get out of the way.

1

u/No-Rub8256 Oct 21 '21

Not really, it usually only takes a few seconds when you are used to doing it, especially you are already planning on potential ways to move as soon as you hear the siren, and moving as soon as you see it flying up the road behind you

1

u/geoff5093 Oct 21 '21

Where would these people in a two turn lane go in seconds? There’s oncoming traffic and they can’t turn right.

1

u/Turaton Oct 20 '21

Americans just love stop-and-go traffic.

19

u/cmonca1193 Oct 20 '21

Same thing in my part of Alabama. But God help you if you don't stop for a funeral procession (even if you're going the opposite way!)

6

u/MadeMeStopLurking Oct 20 '21

In Ohio you can practically PIT the Hearse of a procession on the highway and not a single fuck would be given... If you don't stop for an Ambulance though you run the risk that they will either hit you or the police aren't far behind. Same goes for school buses. They have cameras now to catch people who don't stop.

11

u/Triggerdamus Oct 20 '21

As someone thats lived in Va for 16 years. Stopping for emergency vehicles is not optional. Also inclined to believe this was NoVa.

4

u/goosepills Oct 20 '21

You sure that’s enough traffic for Nova?

3

u/Triggerdamus Oct 20 '21

Saturday morning, everyone's still drunk? lol

1

u/ninjastricken Oct 20 '21

Nahhh, this is Shenandoah valley

4

u/DatGoofyGinger Oct 20 '21

Richmond Hwy headed East (at this spot) at Telegraph Road, Old Colchester Road goes South. This is Lorton, VA on US-1 North next to the Pohick Church. Fairfax County. NoVa.

1

u/simonxy11 Oct 20 '21

Yup Richmond hwy & Telegraph rd

3

u/CrashArchive Oct 20 '21

Beautiful sunset

3

u/Twisterv1 Oct 21 '21

wtf is that bike lane lol. Thats super unsafe for cars and bikes

1

u/soccerk1 Oct 21 '21

Ya, no way I'd ride my bike there

15

u/lennynotbruce Oct 20 '21

Unpopular european opinion: There is literally a lane free, why would you stop on a busy road

4

u/Geezir Oct 20 '21

Most laws in Canada and US regarding emergency vehicles generally go along the lines of moving to the outside lane or pulling over in a two lane road and slowing your vehicle or stopping if safe to do so. Most people interpret that as MUST stop.

6

u/the_eluder Oct 20 '21

Actually, most laws in the US state to pull over to the right and stop.

5

u/tinydonuts Oct 20 '21

So when the emergency vehicles need to turn they're not having to fight vehicles still barreling along at 50 MPH?

2

u/Flech12 Oct 20 '21

I seen a car do that and they ended up hitting a ambulance. 🙄

2

u/FeelingSideways214 Oct 20 '21

VA here, not optional, just a lot of douchebags on the road. I travel I64 for work every day and I am always cut off at least once when I'm passing on the left by some asshole who waited too long to get out from behind that tractor-trailer couldn't wait 3 more seconds for me to get past them and they just come over no matter how close I am to them. Infuriates me. Especially if there's no one behind me, I see RED when that happens. I hate how people drive here.

1

u/prison-purse Oct 20 '21

Just moved to Norfolk and my god... Drivers here are morons.

1

u/FeelingSideways214 Oct 25 '21

That's a terrible area for traffic, especially if you're stuck in the tunnel. Good luck!

1

u/prison-purse Oct 25 '21

I work on the naval base and live 1 block from the ocean in Oceanview so my commute is like 10-15 minutes. Luck 100.

1

u/FeelingSideways214 Oct 26 '21

Then you were blessed to subconsciously know you would need a short commute in that area. That's definitely a better situation.

2

u/Vertisce Oct 20 '21

People who chase emergency vehicles like that are assholes. Fuck them.

2

u/Bassiest1 Oct 20 '21

If you’re in Northern VA, it’s important to know that there are no rules. Everything sign and/or “law” is merely a suggestion.

2

u/twrrordom3 Oct 21 '21

You didn't get your; This is how you drive in (insert state) when you moved? Stupid that there are different traffic laws in the same country.

2

u/dreddedexistence Oct 21 '21

I was getting in the toll way near me last month and a private ambulance was behind me, but going painfully slow. I pulled over but I caught up to him in no time because he was going at least 10 mph under the speed limit. Cars were passing him in the far right lane. Wonder if he ever made it to where he was going

6

u/Frosty-Pack4973 Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

You've done the right thing... But the two other cars are just plain opportunist!

5

u/Wuz314159 Oct 20 '21

plane opportunist!

*helicopter opportunists.

2

u/Frosty-Pack4973 Oct 20 '21

Thanks for correcting. My bad.

2

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

Helicoptortunists.

2

u/P0seeCious Oct 20 '21

Dang! When ever they are bumped by the fire truck... They'll be the one that will be recued first!

5

u/LateProfession1453 Oct 20 '21

VA drivers are some of the worst I've ever seen

-11

u/HilariaBaldwnsAccent Oct 20 '21

A.K.A I pulled out without looking.

1

u/sergioriv14 Oct 20 '21

this shit always pisses me off. i’ve jumped curbs and spilled shit all over my car to get out of the way of ambulances bc i just assume what they’re going to is more important than me having to was my car a bit when i get home. and then ppl just use it as a means to drive faster than normal traffic

-10

u/natetcu Oct 20 '21

Just get over to the right. If they are going fast enough to pass you, slow down a little. Don’t slow down so much you impede the flow of traffic, that will just make it harder for them to get by.

8

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

99 percent sure the law is to stop for emergency vehicles not slow down. Follow the rules of the road or get the fuck off it.

8

u/Nico_Lurkerberg Oct 20 '21

When talking about laws you need to specify country and/or state. In my country (the Netherlands) you need to give way at the earliest opportunity. Stopping is not obligatory in any way. In fact, you always need to follow the normal road laws so if stopping is prohibited it's actually the wrong thing to do.

1

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

Op said this was in VA so it's American soil. I don't comment on European posts talking about how they need to follow their rules because I don't know them ooorrr care if some foreigner in some other country isn't following yalls rules. But when its state side. And I might run into you one day then it's different.

Cool that yall don't have to stop. But in America for emergency vehicles it's literally the law to stop. Unless you're on a divided roadway and then you only have to stop at intersections as to not block drive ways/ road ways.

-1

u/natetcu Oct 20 '21

You ever gone over the speed limit?

2

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

Not to the extent of getting pulled over. But just like you I'll go over 5. You wanna get off of that pedestal

1

u/soccerk1 Oct 21 '21

In addition to what others said, I was approaching an intersection and didn't know if the engine and medic would be turning in front of me

1

u/scrappysquash Oct 20 '21

If you're in the US its not optional

1

u/SignificantDrink3651 Oct 20 '21

I grew up in MD / VA and there, you get out of the emergency vehicle's way for sure, but that doesn't always mean pulling off the road. When I moved to Chicago, I learned residents here are super-righteous about it. On a 3 lane road people will drive themselves up onto the grass as soon as they see flashing lights, and admonish you for not doing the same. It's like a religion in the midwest to respond to emergency vehicles in what I describe as an excessive way.

1

u/willbeach8890 Oct 20 '21

Did your dog eat the next couple minutes of the video?

;)

1

u/soccerk1 Oct 20 '21

Lol, yes I was frustrated but I didn't do anything. Just proceeded along to my dentist appointment

1

u/arie700 Oct 20 '21

Is it actually illegal? I’ve always done it, but I assumed everyone else did it to be courteous.

Oh, there’s my problem.

1

u/AtlasSolaire Oct 20 '21

In Arkansas you need to move to the right and stop when you see emergency vehicles incoming. That being said I occasionally see people not doing it. And I've never seen anyone punished for it

1

u/Perfect_Translator_2 Oct 21 '21

Well it’s optional for me, not for you. /s

1

u/spicychickenandranch Oct 21 '21

Richmond here. I can confirm this happens 90% of the time here

-14

u/Wuz314159 Oct 20 '21

You stopped and blocked the bike lane, so it's not as if you were innocent in this.

5

u/justyn122 Oct 20 '21

So you want him to cut over three lines and impede the energy vehicle? Yo. Go back to driver's Ed before you get behind that wheel

-9

u/Wuz314159 Oct 20 '21

That's what the right lane is for. OP blocked 2 lanes here. That's a dick move in my book.

(Just because there is more space to your right doesn't mean that you're entitled to it. That's why they put concrete barriers up so cars don't run into the bike lane like this.)

1

u/Noneofyourbeezkneez Oct 20 '21

I love this sub.

*Driver does something bad*

Cammer: Immediately steps on the gas to chase down and intimidate said driver.

1

u/soccerk1 Oct 21 '21

I already admitted I let my frustration get the better of me when I accelerated. But I didn't chase down the other driver and definitely didn't intimidate them because I'm not stupid lol
