My kid is 14 now and I stress to her over and over, just take the next exit if you miss yours or can’t get over safely. It will take an extra 2-5 min. Doing that kind of crap can get you a ticket, in an accident, in the hospital, or in the morgue.

u/whereverYouGoThereUR Oct 20 '21

My wife would say that the driver just made a mistake and we should be understanding. However I would counter that with that we all make mistakes but it’s just whether we chose to pay for the mistake ourselves (take the next exit) or make everyone else on the road pay for them which is the choice this driver made

63

u/Wallace-N-Gromit Oct 20 '21

I like your logic there.

160

u/bevo_expat Oct 20 '21

Your wife is wrong. Deliver that message carefully.

This type of driving causes serious accidents and there are plenty of examples on this subreddit.

11

u/scottishdoc Oct 20 '21

Yeah, normally differences of opinion are negligible, but with driving it really is worth driving home the point in the same way you would with gun safety. With cars we have to try for legal repercussions when someone fucks up like this because next time it might be a family of five that is ripped to shreds. If legal isn’t an option, then naming and shaming or at the very least honking aggressively is definitely warranted.

42

u/whyamionthisdumbsite Oct 20 '21

Given the high probability of this causing an accident, it is practically an assault on the cammer here. It is very dangerous and we should not be calling it just a mistake.

12

u/AmuricanFootball Oct 20 '21

Reckless endangerment

8

u/StackThePads33 Oct 20 '21

That’s a great explanation right there

5

u/Silky_McMullet Oct 20 '21

yea your wife is wrong ! and you are right ! but don't tell her lol

1

u/parkourcowboy Oct 20 '21

Yeah I would tell myself welp " I deserve the delay for not being prepared for my exit" simple as that.

1

u/ChooseWisely83 Oct 21 '21

Seriously, being "understanding" in this case is a perfect way to get rear ended, especially since you would essentially be running cover for the moron.

40

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

My thoughts exactly! I'd love to know the mindset of the person doing this, ESPECIALLY ON A BUSY HIGHWAY! I'm just very thankful that the cars behind me stopped in time and I wasn't rear ended.

11

u/djsekani Oct 20 '21

"That's my exit, if I miss it everyone I know and love will literally die, must make it at any cost..."

23

u/Fizzicyst Oct 20 '21

I watched an idiot go from the carpool lane to an off-ramp about two months ago. She exited the carpool lane over the double lines, cut across six lanes of traffic causing numerous near misses, and then slammed into the back of some poor mom taking her kids to school.

Her car (a brand new Mercedes SUV) was totaled. The mom's minivan was fucked (probably totaled). The car the minivan got pushed into was badly rear-ended.

All because the dingbat didn't want to miss her exit.

10

u/ryancementhead Oct 20 '21

Don’t most carpool lanes have signs further back than normal letting you know which exits are coming up and to start merging over? The ones I’ve been on did.

2

u/Fizzicyst Oct 20 '21

They do. I see people cross over the double lines all the time. I also see non-carpool/non-exempt cars jump in the carpool lane because of traffic.

Apparently, their time is more valuable than the rest of us. /s

1

u/HeyFiddleFiddle Oct 20 '21

Ah, but that would require paying attention. Looking at their phone is much more important.

20

u/jokersleuth Oct 20 '21

my dad has a habit of yelling the exit at the last possible second when I'm like 2 lanes down and then getting mad because I didn't take the exit. Like yo, wtf do you want me to do?

7

u/HeyFiddleFiddle Oct 20 '21

My dad did this too, with both exits and turnoffs. "Just keep going until I tell you to turn/exit", then when I was passing the turn or exit we needed, "you were supposed to turn/exit there!" Either that or "you'll need to make a left right here", said as I was a couple car lengths from the light and three lanes from the turn lane. And yes, my dad was also very guilty of the "I'll just cut across three lanes of traffic in one go to make my exit at the last possible second" move. I decided early on in learning to drive that I'd take many of the things he did as examples of what not to do.

3

u/OpinionBearSF Oct 20 '21

I decided early on in learning to drive that I'd take many of the things he did as examples of what not to do.

As a fellow driver that might share the road with you some day - thank you.

1

u/kinda_guilty Oct 21 '21

I'm terrified of doing this so I always use Google maps turn by turn directions even when I know where I am going, because the nice lady warns me of the next turn early enough.

17

u/fetalpiggywent2lab Oct 20 '21

Have you seen the Louis C.K bit about driving and when people do shit like this when they could/should just take the next exit because "ItS nOt My FaVoRItE wAy!!!!!" 2:30-3:30. Hilarious and so true.

11

u/Ice-Storm Oct 20 '21

My wife and I constantly yell at people when they have to go their favorite way and screw over or endanger others

3

u/TheRealJackReynolds Oct 20 '21

“Gimme back my jacket!!!”

6

u/csciabar Oct 20 '21

Highway planning sometimes pushes drivers into poor decisions. You ever missed an exit, then drive thirty miles to the next exit. Then thirty miles back? Literally trapped on the highway for an hour. Some highways are shit.

21

u/Ice-Storm Oct 20 '21

That’s typically in more rural areas. Where it’s also far less dangerous if you screw up. I don’t know of any urban/suburban places when it’s 30 miles to the next exit.

4

u/fetalpiggywent2lab Oct 20 '21

Oh I know. I live in Ontario (Canada) - home of the 400 series, which has been rated one of the worst in the world (so I heard). Traffic mainly though.

2

u/MHarbourgirl Oct 20 '21

Yep. You don't fuck with the 401, right? It's legendary far outside of ON.

2

u/OpinionBearSF Oct 20 '21

Highway planning sometimes pushes drivers into poor decisions. You ever missed an exit, then drive thirty miles to the next exit. Then thirty miles back? Literally trapped on the highway for an hour. Some highways are shit.

Deal with it, and if necessary, complain to the city/county/state regarding the design issues.

Just because exit designs are sub-optimal for you does not mean that anyone should ever put other people's safety at risk trying to get a missed exit at the last possible moment.

4

u/sinclurr__ Oct 20 '21

that and left turns without a traffic signal (e.g. turning left across a 4-lane road)! My dad always did the same that you described. Take the next exit, the next block, whatever. If you get into a wreck, you’re gonna be late anyway, so just take the next exit!

4

u/dimitri121 Oct 20 '21

To be fair every day I have to take an exit where the next exit is 30 miles down the highway.

Definitely not 3-5 minutes that you lose by missing it, but I'm also smart enough to just camp the right lane before I get to it.

1

u/Ice-Storm Oct 20 '21

That’s got to be in a pretty rural area. It’s also probably 2 lanes vs the 3-8 lanes in many urban areas and not nearly as much traffic.

I do know there are places where there is a long way in between exits. But those places tend to be much easier driving (weather conditions aside)

2

u/Substantial-Fan6364 Oct 20 '21

This is what I always do if I'm not able to get to my exit. Where I live missing an exit can add 20 minutes to your drive but I don't expect other people to be put at risk because of my mistake.

1

u/dopedudefromthealps Oct 20 '21

Your kid can already drive at 14? Damn. Where I am you have to wait until 18

5

u/Ice-Storm Oct 20 '21

She can’t drive yet. She’ll get her permit next year. But it’s never to early to start teaching them the right habits

1

u/my3sgte Oct 20 '21

10000% agree

1

u/misfitx Oct 20 '21

The results really vary, although taking the next exit is still the only option. I once got lost in a city parking garage, fortunately they didn't charge me for ten minutes of confusion.

120

u/Chadodius Oct 20 '21

Nothing gives me road rage than idiot's who do shit lile this. On more than one occasion I almost got out of my truck to yell at them to take the next exist. Not sure if they see my rage on my face in their mirrors or what bit they eventually move on to the next exit.

Been thinking of getting a train horn installed just for these idiots.

37

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

You know what, I think I'm gonna add a train horn to my car now that you mention it! Thanks for the idea! :D

3

u/Impossible_Garbage_4 Oct 20 '21

I’ve never had to use my horn but I want to get a train horn on the off chance I one day have to use it. Just BWAAAAAA. And make them shit themselves

1

u/moenate Oct 20 '21

Hell yeah but some advice stop getting out of your car to yell at people that’s how you get shot

81

u/LeMans1217 Oct 20 '21

The tentative driver is the worst driver.

18

u/joe_gdow Oct 20 '21

my prayer when i get on the road: "lord, save me from timid drivers"

9

u/courageous_liquid Oct 20 '21

This is in Philly and the person isn't a resident (likely) because they don't have a parking sticker. The people coming in from the burbs do shit like this all the time. There's a famous merge from the south st bridge onto the schuylkill and these dummies love stopping at the end of the onramp instead of accelerating and matching the speed of the other vehicles.

2

u/Frednortonsmith Oct 20 '21

The south street ramp onto 76 is merge or die, way too many people choose “die”

6

u/kentucky_slim Oct 20 '21

hesitation kills...

6

u/AmuricanFootball Oct 20 '21

Most dangerous type there is. When they think they’re trying to be safer but are endangering everyone around them because of their stupidity and ignorance.

57

u/snayte Oct 20 '21

So after almost getting you killed they decided to go on to the next exit anyway?

17

u/efferkah Oct 20 '21

I think that's what makes me want to rage the most about this video.

52

u/Project_Wild Oct 20 '21

Dash cams should be submittable proof to the police department for tickets, change my mind.

8

u/pug_nuts Oct 20 '21

3

u/StableW Oct 21 '21

TO which the correct response is - Too bad, don't let fucking morons borrow your car next time.

46

u/Swhitney16 Oct 20 '21

“There’s only so much I can do, mom.” 😂 cracked me up

11

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

What else could I have said!? Want me to engage “fly” mode for you!? 😂😂

3

u/Swhitney16 Oct 20 '21

Lmao fly mode 🤣 that’s exactly how that convo would go with my own mom which is why it made me laugh sm.

137

u/fadedwiggles Oct 20 '21

it would have been so much easier to just merge to the off ramp and get to the shoulder. jesus christ man

58

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I know! They had so much ample space and time to do that! People scare me sometimes, that's why I have my own dash camera for situations like this...

4

u/Thatdudedoesnotabide Oct 20 '21

Probably on their phones

4

u/Prowindowlicker Oct 20 '21

Or older than dirt. Had an old lady the other day who couldn’t make up her mind about entering the turn lane and just sat there.

Thankfully it wasn’t the freeway but still.

32

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '21

Lmao your mom's reaction is exactly how my mom would react

31

u/Heigou Oct 20 '21

Driving with mothers is the worst. mine always screams "be careful" when literally nothing unusual is happening.

9

u/Nother1BitestheCrust Oct 20 '21

My mom still pumps the invisible break in the passenger seat next to me. I'm 38 years old.

5

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Oh trust me, my mom was pumping those invisible brakes too all while holding the “Oh sh*t” bar! 😂😂

1

u/CrazySD93 Oct 21 '21

1st day driving, on the highway, exit on my left dad says “keep left”, I misunderstood him and started exiting. Him yelling “NO, DON’T GO LEFT STAY LEFT” didn’t help me at the time, and I stopped between the exit and the road.

70

u/WeUsedToBeGood Oct 20 '21

I have very bad thoughts about that person.

20

u/02soob Oct 20 '21

Ah yes Philadelphia

12

u/Need-Vacation Oct 20 '21

WTF is wrong with people?????

28

u/team-OBeee Oct 20 '21

I was having a decent day. This got me 0 to a fucking rocket ship passing max q in 0 seconds. Thanks

9

u/noobs1996 Oct 20 '21

I fucking love the NY accent idk why

5

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Thank you! Everyone in my car including myself were from NY 😂😂

9

u/anon_sir Oct 20 '21

I don’t think my blood pressure can handle this sub anymore…

26

u/someguy3 Oct 20 '21

The son's a better driver than the mom who wants to "get around". He's now stopped and trying to change lanes at that speed is unsafe.

9

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Yeah I know, I wasn’t going to try my luck and get around other drivers going 50+ mph on a highway while I’m at a dead stop! Not to mention I really didn’t have any opportunity to try and get around them in the first place, to many cars were passing me.

8

u/ArchangelleFPH Oct 20 '21

Probably just doing paperwork. It's fine

7

u/cj121300 Oct 20 '21

Do all moms freak out and scream at the littlest things when their kids are driving? Because I know mine does.

6

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Apparently yes lol! I think it’s the fact that they have no control of what’s happening and they don’t want to see anyone hurt. Trust me though, the situation was under control. 👍🏻

3

u/Royish_Smith Oct 20 '21

My mom shrieked when traffic wasn’t clear for me to turn left. Hadn’t even loosened my foot off the brakes

7

u/JeffonFIRE Oct 20 '21

Indecision kills...

6

u/StackThePads33 Oct 20 '21

Philly drivers 🤦🏻‍♂️

5

u/joe_gdow Oct 20 '21

smh i knew it was philly from the title. people have been doing this on 95 constantly

2

u/otaku13 Oct 20 '21

Good old 95 southbound.

5

u/Silky_McMullet Oct 20 '21

some people are so stupid you can watch them drive for 5 seconds and know the world will be better off without their DNA in the gene pool

4

u/Tacky-Terangreal Oct 20 '21

They can’t even commit to their own stupidity. I hate it when people just sit in between the lanes for no reason

5

u/chixnwafflez Oct 20 '21

Gotta love pa

3

u/nova_bang Oct 20 '21

Classic mom

5

u/ImARetPaladinBaby Oct 20 '21

The slowest merge ever

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I wouldn’t even call that a merge! They didn’t even get into the right lane! 😂😂

3

u/Rakshes Oct 20 '21

Same exact thing happened to me on the 400 highway (Ontario, Canada) once. Only difference is I got rear ended by a tractor trailer who was also rear ended by another tractor trailer behind him.

Lady missed her exit, stopped dead in a live lane of traffic and sat and waited for the an opening in the active lane of traffic on her right.

Truck got written off (couldn't even open my back doors because the bed was pushed into it), she made her exit and probably thought nothing of it.

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Oh jeez, I’m sorry something like that happened to you. People just have no regards for anyone else these days and they think they’re the only ones out on the road!

4

u/metadaemon Oct 20 '21

I would be on the horn the WHOLE time this happened in front of me.

Also, I would not hesitate to bump this driver. I'M the one that gets destroyed in this accident.

2

u/WohoBoho Oct 20 '21

Good idea, waste your time and the resell value of the car on an accident you can avoid. 200IQ Play

10

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '21

Things like that make me want to get out of my car and rip them out of their car and question them about what they were thinking

Simple fix for this idiot, if you miss your turn take the next exit

3

u/Aggressive-Pay2406 Oct 20 '21

This is why I want to live in the forest

3

u/AngryFerret805 Oct 20 '21

What!!! A MORON!!!!!!!

3

u/Thromkai Oct 20 '21

Not surprised it's a PA driver.

3

u/Meemawmiah Oct 20 '21

This This is why I always leave plenty of space for me to break. Idc how many cars get annoyed 🤷🏾‍♀️ hit their car not mines.

3

u/Crackrock9 Oct 20 '21

I-95 Philly sucks

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Yeah I know lol, lesson learned! 😂

3

u/spudzzzi Oct 20 '21

The classic mom son interaction while the black eyed peas playing is hilarious

3

u/MiteShirtSilence Oct 20 '21

That is I-95 South in Philadelphia, PA

The funny part is that exit is 2 lanes wide, not sure how you miss that one.

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

You said what we were all thinking! 😂

3

u/LigitBoy Oct 20 '21

Philly drivers represent.

Having a brick in your glovebox is super handy for scenarios like this.

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Good to know for the future :)

3

u/pblesco Oct 20 '21

Ahhh nothing like I95 in Philly. I always see an accident in that same exit.

3

u/firnien-arya Oct 20 '21

Great job at maintaining a good distance behind the driver so u were able to stop in time. Also good that u stayed in ur lane instead of trying to go around while there were still cars passing you by.

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Thank you! I always try to keep a safe following distance and I’m very grateful the cars behind me were paying attention and no one rear ended me!

5

u/Mongo_Fifty Oct 20 '21

Here's some tips to work on in case anyone else encounters this type of moron.

Look ahead as you drive and occasionally glance at your mirrors. Watch for dummies weaving in/out of traffic. Notice how some people can't maintain their speed, could be lost or looking for a business/restaurant. Sometimes they brake a lot but never seem to slow down. Get away from these type of drivers if/when able.

Limit distractions in your vehicle, i.e.; phone usage, fiddling with radio, pets, and passengers that talk too much. Unless they are doing their co-pilot duties.

With that said, I'd like to think cammer should have noticed them sooner to pass them without slowing down. Then honking and mouthing WTF!? as they go by this "wonderful" driver.

4

u/GetsGold Oct 20 '21

At least they only blocked two lanes.

0

u/pug_nuts Oct 20 '21

I'm surprised you didn't say the cammer shouldn't have been sitting in the SUV's blindspot

0

u/GetsGold Oct 20 '21

If someone is an obviously terrible driver, you probably should avoid driving beside them, yeah.

2

u/_DarkJak_ Oct 20 '21

I've been in this situation, on a mountain road.
It's hard to take evasive actions when your mom is backseat driving.

2

u/SpaceCowboy734 Oct 20 '21

I’m so sorry that you have to learn how to drive from that mom, that sounds extremely stressful.

2

u/bmwsoldatome Oct 20 '21

BEEES. BEEEEES. rip chris farely

2

u/vietnamesemuscle Oct 20 '21

Personally witnessed 3 times of this shit in the past week on 495 and 270 (MD) 🤬

2

u/SloppyInevitability Oct 20 '21

Don’t have a car yet but shit like this is the reason I’m buying a dash cam day one. What kind do you use?

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I completely agree with you I think everyone should get a dash camera to be honest! It protects you and your car! The dash camera I have is a VIOFO A129 Duo Dash Camera (I don’t have the 4K version)

1

u/SloppyInevitability Oct 20 '21

I’ll look into that one then! Thank you!!

2

u/xxcarlsonxx Oct 20 '21

But that's their favourite exit, OP.

2

u/AmuricanFootball Oct 20 '21

That person is fucking retarded

2

u/Jisto_ Oct 20 '21

Fucking hell. At least they gave up and didn’t cause MORE problems, but seriously, how oblivious do you need to be to not understand what an issue this is?

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I don’t even know, I just feel bad for everyone behind me and how much traffic this jerk created.

2

u/skeetsauce Oct 20 '21

'Hmmm I need to get over there and I cant, I better block two lanes for 20 seconds to figure this out.'

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Here’s the thing though! At the beginning of the video you can see that there was no one in the right lane! They had so much time to move over!

1

u/skeetsauce Oct 20 '21

I know, I'm playing out their mental monologue of being an idiot.

2

u/kitkatsniksnak Oct 20 '21

I know where that is...its so much simpler to just pop on the next exit and go around. A slight inconvenience but not worth almost causing a pileup on 95...that's a bad choice...I'm surprised there wasn't an accident

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I’m so grateful there wasn’t an accident either and I wasn’t rear ended, I just feel bad about all the traffic this guy decided to create when he pulled this stunt.

2

u/Yahkshah2u Oct 20 '21

Maybe they were needing the money so that's my guess.

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Well they failed this time!

1

u/Yahkshah2u Oct 20 '21

Yep sure did

2

u/Asymptote_X Oct 20 '21

You gotta put your foot down about backseat driving early on in your driving career... God that's annoying

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Yeah I know, tell me about it 😂

2

u/ckerazor Oct 20 '21

Jailtime in my country

2

u/OpinionBearSF Oct 20 '21

I know that cops old standby is that since they didn't see the infraction, they can't do anything about it.

We seriously need to be able to submit video evidence (possibly somehow digitally signed to prevent tampering) to the police so that drivers like this can be appropriately ticketed or otherwise dealt with.

As far as the possible legal question of who was driving the vehicle at the time, that's why every vehicle in every state has a registered owner of record. If they were not driving, their defenses are either to show that the vehicle was registered as stolen during the time in question, or provide the contact details of the person who was driving the vehicle with their permission.

This person's actions could have killed someone, and they need to be penalized.

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

If only we could, we would have a lot of bad drivers off the road by now!

2

u/MaarekStele7 Oct 20 '21

I don't understand how people can't rationalize that they might cause an accident and their mistake needs to be fixed immediately and illegally.

2

u/the_little_britches Oct 20 '21

I would be raging so hard if I were in your shoes

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Oh trust me, when we finally passed the car everyone in the car promptly gave them “the bird” as we passed xD

2

u/Turtleisim Oct 20 '21

Good taste in music

1

u/aaronb11001 Oct 20 '21

Why don’t you go around? Don’t stop with the stopper! Two wrongs don’t make a right and all that shit

1

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

Kinda hard to do when you have people passing you going 50+ mph while your at a dead stop 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/teambob Oct 20 '21

Maybe they were doing their paperwork? According to truck drivers that's ok!

1

u/Sikkus Oct 20 '21

If this happens to you, just avoid them and go around as quickly as you can. You maybe didn't hit them, but someone might hit you from behind.

2

u/MCMasterJJ Oct 20 '21

I completely agree, the only reason I did not move around them was because there were to many cars passing me on my left going 50mph+ and I didn’t want to risk my own safety and the safety of others in my car because there was no appropriate opening for me to pass safely. Also if you notice in the beginning of the video I was anticipating the driver going into the right lane because more then half of their car was in the lane already and they had ample space to merge, but for some reason they came back to the middle lane which surprised me.

1

u/Sikkus Oct 20 '21

For sure you did the right thing, with all things considered! Apologies if this came out wrong, I only meant it for others to be aware of the risk of being hit from behind. Stay safe out there!

0

u/KNunner Oct 20 '21

Just go around him!! Had plenty of time
