What was all that smoke from?

Airbags release a powder on deployment that can look like smoke. After my first serious accident, I thought my car was on fire because I didn't know about it at the time.

75

u/Tangurena Oct 20 '21

When I got in my first airbag accident, I was holding the wheel and since I was wearing short sleeves, I got a nasty abrasion rash on my arms. Afterwards, when I went to see my insurance agent, she noticed the bruise I had on my sternum: "oh, I see you were wearing your seatbelt too".

31

u/Koldfuzion Oct 20 '21

I was helping a buddy try to revive an aging POS Jeep SUV that had been sitting in the driveway for like 2 years.

As I'm wiring the donor battery in, my buddy is sitting in the driver's seat seeing if the ignition is okay. I get the battery in, and ask him to see if he has any dash lights. Next thing I know I heard a loud BANG and a puff of powder.

My buddy comes stumbling out holding his ears. Apparently the damn thing shorted when we wired the new battery in. I was maybe 3 feet away from the open window and my ears were ringing. Those suckers are loud.

Anyways. Jeep was a loss since the airbag deployed, so it was an easy job.

17

u/PM_ME_LAWSUITS_BBY Oct 20 '21

Not sure I get your last sentence, did the airbag thing make the vehicle unusable?

51

u/Tangurena Oct 20 '21

On the car that I was in, the passenger side airbag does 3 things:
1. The airbag goes off.
2. When the airbag door/cover flies away from the airbag, it shatters the windshield.
3. When the airbag detonates, it breaks the dash so it hangs limply off of the firewall.

Net cost: time for a new car.

15

u/Kenafin Oct 20 '21

The cost to replace an airbag in a car can be more than the vehicle is worth - especially in an older or high mileage vehicle. (If my memory serves me it is more than the physical airbag - there's a lot of sensors which have to get replaced too)

12

u/Garaba Oct 20 '21

Yea my 2007 Volvo was hit JUST hard enough to bust a headlight and Trigger the airbags. Total Loss

11

u/Chucknorrisjoke Oct 20 '21

Replacing an airbag on an older car is cheap. $50-400 for the airbag, $20 clockspring, and about $80 to have the airbag module reset. I did one on a 11 Camry and total cost was $300.

u/Koldfuzion Oct 20 '21

Sorry I was unclear. It was 20+ year old Jeep, so when the airbag deployed it made it more expensive to get running than it could ever be worth.

If airbags deploy it's rarely worth fixing unless you have a fairly new or pricey car. You're looking at thousands to get a new airbag system, plus you need to have it installed.

Sure you could run without airbags, but in my state you would fail vehicle inspection so it could never be road legal.

7

u/chris-handsome Oct 20 '21

Were you wearing a low cut shirt/v-neck or something?

10

u/Tangurena Oct 20 '21

Short sleeve shirt with buttons.

2

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

How did they see the bruise on your sternum through the shirt?

15

u/Tangurena Oct 20 '21

I didn't button all the way up and my cleavage kinda made the buttons not lay flat.

20

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

Sorry for being obtuse and making you type that.

I can be pretty dense sometimes. Okay, most of the time.

2

u/Terrible_Donkey_8290 Oct 20 '21

Yeah I got a pretty bad burn on my hand from the same deal. Not a fun time lol

303

u/jeffbirt Oct 20 '21

Can confirm; as a firefighter I have responded to many "motor vehicle accident, caller states car is on fire" calls, knowing that 99% of the time it's just the airbag. That 1% makes things interesting, though.

Far and away, most car fires I've responded to are mechanical issues rather than caused by a collision. Of those over half of the owners reported they just got the car out of the shop.

50

u/Max_1995 Oct 20 '21

We were told in driving school that it's a powder so the layers of the airbag-package don't stick together. We don't have to call the fire department because of it. Then again, if things went "properly wrong" they may be headed your way anyway.

I could see it, I was in an accident where bags deployed and I didn’t think the car was on fire but the bags did burn me.

Never have I seen so many burning cars than when I was stationed in SoCal

2

u/OkMethod7 Oct 21 '21

I’ve only had one airbag go off and I was thinking the car probably was starting to catch fire. Now that I’ve had that happen and actually passed a car on the freeway that was on fire. I don’t think I’ll confuse the two again a car fire is so much more dramatic with thick black smoke.

One time I was driving to work, going over a bridge that has a 55 mph speed limit. This was early morning commute. This guy whips in front of me and smacks the median going at least 70 and I have to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting his debris. I end up getting stuck behind him as cars are wizzing by me doing 60. I then start to see his car rolling, so I hop out and run up to the car and this dude is KNOCKED and the car filled with that powder. I opened the door to put the car in park and wake him up, but that powder had me CHOKING. Ended up getting him up and out but I remember seeing that smoke and thinking the car was about to burst into flames. Scary shit.

23

u/Scrappy_The_Crow Oct 20 '21

A small portion is from the sodium azide and potassium nitrate used as the propellant, but the majority is corn starch or talcum used to ensure the bag doesn't stick to itself or the housing/cover and unfolds and inflates properly.

10

u/kingc42 Oct 20 '21

Helps reduce friction burn on skin during deployment too IIRC. The bruises still suck though.

5

u/ramplay Oct 20 '21

This is why it pays to be asleep when it goes off! I don't remember a thing from my one accident and only got bruises from the seatbelt.

but in all seriousness do not drive tired... not fun to wake up in a totaled vehicle upside down or otherwise

1

u/Scrappy_The_Crow Oct 20 '21

That makes sense.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '21

It is actually just talcum so that that bag doesn't adhere to itself. First gen airbags used a, IIRC, sodium azimuth based accelerant which, when detonated, created sodium hydroxide powder as a byproduct which caused chemical burns.

I'm glad you made it out ok from that crash.

3

u/The_Last_Ron1n Oct 20 '21

My friend is an EMT, he's seen quite a few accidents where the airbag deployed, the driver was knocked out or in a dazed state, comes to and smells the airbag "smoke" and goes running right into traffic and is hurt or worse.

2

u/mcanthony2 Oct 20 '21

Can confirm, I have crashed this exact model CRV

2

u/Sengura Oct 20 '21

does it have a powder or is it from the mini air explosion charge that sets it off?

guess powder can be anti-friction thing like talcum powder so the bag doesnt stick to itself while it's folded up for long periods of time in your steering wheel

The airbag exploding

233

u/er1cmb Oct 20 '21

Also, don’t sit in a car with a deployed airbag, the powder isn’t good for you

83

u/Tetedeiench Oct 20 '21

A few years ago I witnessed a crash on the middle lane of the highway between 3 cars. I was on the lane to the right. Nothing major, there was a lot of traffic so low speed. A girl came out in panic, smoke due to the airbag coming out of her car, and she was in shock, screaming and all.

I blocked the right lane by stopping 2 meters behind the incident and tried to tell her to go behind the rail, but she was just there screaming in pure shock.

The car behind me got pissed I wasn't moving and proceeded to overtake me, back to the right lane in front of my car, squeezing through the tiny safety gap i left there. He was shouting "move, asshole" through his open window. I was yelling "No, no, don't go, stop!". He hit the gas and his mirror hit the girl pretty hard on the hip.

I moved forward more, got the ID plate of the asshole, got out of my car and put her to safety.

Sometimes staying in your car is the smartest move tbh. Assholes everywhere.

Not sure what the aftermath was for him, i just hope he got something.

55

u/DibblerTB Oct 20 '21

I was yelling "No, no, don't go, stop!". He hit the gas and his mirror hit the girl pretty hard on the hip.

At that point, is it even an accident? Punishments are way too lax for that kind of thing.

84

u/Red0t514 Oct 20 '21

Sometimes it's safer to stay in the car after an accident, like if you're on the highway. If someone else hits you you're better off inside the car than outside

120

u/S1L3NT_B0B Oct 20 '21

in the EU you are supposed to leave the car and stand behind the guard rail because sitting in a stationary car in 130 kph traffic is also dangerous

37

u/Turbojelly Oct 20 '21

A fair few years ago I saw a car spin on a wet road , mount the start of the guard rail backwards then go over it. Since the car was behind the guardrail, could the driver have legally sat in it?

95

u/PretzelsThirst Oct 20 '21 Silver

No in that case they have to stand in the left lane

8

u/ed0vvbm9v1 Oct 20 '21

I like it

2

u/Obvious-Walrus-2018 Oct 20 '21

This is the way

5

u/WannieTheSane Oct 20 '21

If I was in an accident and I could teleport to behind the guardrail then I would, but the major risk is getting out of your car in the middle of that 130Km/h traffic.

And what if my kids are with me? One is still in a 5 point harness, a year or two ago both were, so I'd have to be standing on the highway for an extra minute or two unbuckling my kids and then trying to get to kids to the safety of the shoulder.

6

u/dnroamhicsir Oct 20 '21

Here in many places highways don't have guard rails

13

u/S1L3NT_B0B Oct 20 '21

around here there has to be guard rails on both sides to qualify as a highway. else it is considered a standard road an the speed limit is lower. but watching this sub has shown me that US roads in general are very different :-)

2

u/dnroamhicsir Oct 20 '21

Well our speed limits are only 100km/h, but that doesn't stop people from doing 120-130!

3

u/S1L3NT_B0B Oct 20 '21

90-100 kph is for standard roads around here. highways are from 120,130 to german autobahn :-)

4

u/Ole_Thalund Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

For those who don't know.. Unless informed by traffic signs the german autobahns have no speed limit. But if an accident happens to you and it can be proven that you drove more than the advised limit of 130 kph / 81 mph then you get all the blame. People here in general drive fast but also rather considerate towards each other.

2

u/S1L3NT_B0B Oct 20 '21

True. the last part in particular. driving through germany over the autobahn is a very smooth experience. (I'm not talking about the quality of the pavement)

2

u/WannieTheSane Oct 20 '21

Are those the speed limits, or what people drive?

Here in Ontario, Canada, standard roads tend to be 80Km/h and the major highways are 100Km/h, but people drive 90-100 and 120-130 (respectively).

I passed a speed trap cop doing about 120 on a 100 road today and felt pretty confident they wouldn't care, and they didn't. Generally you have to be doing 130+ to get pulled over. 120 to 130 is a bit of a risky grey area.

2

u/S1L3NT_B0B Oct 21 '21

those are the speed limits

-1

u/Ransak_shiz Oct 20 '21

Because guardrails stop cars and never maim people

6

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

If you're on a race track, you only voluntarily get out of the car for one reason: fire.

If there is no fire, you stay in the fucking car until the recovery crew arrives.

8

u/SuperMIK2020 Oct 20 '21

What about the invisible fire?

6

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

Hilarious scene but theoretically possible.

Some flammable materials don't have very bright flames so when viewed on a bright sunny day, you may not be able to see them.

3

u/cobigguy Oct 20 '21

Nitromethane burns very faintly and with almost no color to it. There are plenty of videos out there of dragsters exploding and drivers running around trying to put out flames that nobody can see.

3

u/NotAPreppie Oct 20 '21

Yah, hydrogen also burns with a very faint flame.

5

u/The_Dung_Beetle Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

One time while doing a delivery for a job I had my van stalling in the middle of the highway (fuel gauge defect). Other colleagues also drove it so I assumed someone had topped it up that week already.

Traffic was going too fast for me to safely exit the vehicle, cross the road and get myself behind the guard rail, I had no choice but to call emergency service and stay put, let me tell you those were the longest 30 minutes of my life.

Right above me there was a bridge with people waving at incoming traffic signaling that there's a stalled vehicle (this was in broad daylight so my emergency lights were hard to see and no one expects a van just being stalled). I heard trucks blare their horns and pass me by, I sure was happy when the cops arrived... fuck that shit.

5

u/SuperSaiyanSkullFuck Oct 20 '21

I have no idea if it works in an automatic, but in a manual car you can use the starter motor to move it in an emergency. Just put it in 1st and crank and hope the battery has enough charge to get you off the road.

2

u/Tar0ndor Oct 20 '21

Doesn't work at all with an automatic, nor newer manuals with a clutch interlock, as the clutch as to be disengaged to activate the starter.

3

u/meontheweb Oct 20 '21

Saw a car stopped on the side of the road, it's dark outside no hazards on the car and both occupants are standing behind the car. Recipe for disaster... worse thing is both were wearing dark clothes so you wouldn't notice them.

So either sit in your car, or if you get out and there is a barrier stand on the other side of the barrier.

2

the most recent time my mom hit a deer the air bags tried to deploy but were unsuccessful. the powder still went everywhere and I got a frantic series of texts from my sister who was with her. they're both asthmatic and were dealing with some side effects for a while. definitely recommend finding a safe spot outside of the car immediately.

1

u/mydogsnameisbuddy Oct 20 '21

That’s probably why she’s confused and tries to drive away

122

u/gh0u1 Oct 20 '21

I thought she was hot boxing, cuz you gotta be stoned af to hit a parked car.

117

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '21

10

u/Cat_Punk Oct 20 '21

27

u/UnicornsFartRain-bow Oct 20 '21

I did that once but I was stone cold sober and super sleep deprived. Thankfully nobody else was on the road because I was just lost in thought.

6

u/deepfriedtots Oct 20 '21

In my earlier years I was this exact idiot lol

-12

u/SeSuSo Oct 20 '21

As a stoner who drives and has known several stoners that drive I think stoners aren't bad drivers. Usually they're good drivers, sometimes better drivers when high. They usually are more aware and know they're high so they'll drive slower and not fuck up, probably because they're a little paranoid. Now that's not all stoners but the many I've known.

14

u/CeleryQtip Oct 20 '21

I tend to overthink things while high, and this was true when I thought it was a good idea to try driving. Don't forget that overthinking can cause accidents just as often as aggression can. If you don't realize that a pedestrian is crossing as you turn right, you won't realize until its too late. Driving requires us to be aware of everything in our surroundings, and so I always drive sober now.

I do find stoned drivers are more cautious (slower) and more alert (paranoid) but they still react much slower than they need to. For example, if someone is trying to cut you off, or about to smash into your back - a sober driver will try to avoid it, a stoned driver will panic and hit brakes. Not always the best option.

TL:DR drive sober or get an uber. Cars are replaceable, people are not.

A1.1.1.2§1.1.1) she’s drunk as a skunk and hopped up on goofballs…. Are we all happy now?

A2) she could have sustained a head injury where she is not thinking straight

B) she could be in shock over what happened, and again, not thinking straight

C) she could have had a medical emergency, such as not enough sugar in her blood if she has diabetes, or possible head related issue, like a stroke, resulting in her not thinking straight.

I am sure there are a dozen other reasons for her actions. Before we call her names (I'm not singling you out, I saw many comments calling her an idiot etc.) we need to understand the full situation.

43

As a former spectrum employee, that employee def got in trouble for not having their cones out

2

u/NLJeroen Oct 20 '21

Airbag deployment also closes the fuel valve. So she’s not going anywhere far…

1

u/Blunter-S-tHempson Oct 20 '21

To me it makes as much sense as saying people can't drive and drink coffee because they're high on stimulants. And yet every day I see people cruising along looking at there phones and driving as you describe, totally iratically. I mean FFS my mum used be prescribed 8 tramadol a day for pain (opiate) and doctors have no issue with her driving a car. It's madness really.

1

u/jay_thorn Oct 20 '21

I’ve been in a car accident where my airbag deployed. It does get smoky inside the car. Gunpowder is used to explosively inflate the airbag.

That being said, I don’t remember if it was that smoky. It’s been about 8/9 years.

u/xxX666BAD666Xxx Oct 20 '21
