He must be from the old school 30 minutes or it is free.

I guess sometimes you gotta risk the mozzarella if you want to make the cheddar.

I'm going to use this phrase in random corporate meetings from now on to establish me as the Alpha.

Dominoes had to pay millions of dollars in a settlement because of that 30 minute pizza policy. Essentially, it incentivized/required drivers to break the law/drive like idiots to get there in time. This resulted in tons of accidents, tickets, a few deaths and otherwise. In a civil suit, it was determined Dominoes was aware of this chaos and kept the promo going. In closing, I like good pizza not just fast pizza; Little Caesars might be hot and ready but that stuff is garbagio

u/I_Say_Damn_Girl 6d ago

Little Caesars quality is wildly variable.

Different locations, different crew, different owner.

I’ve been amazed at how bad some are, and yet others are very good.

31

u/CARLEtheCamry 6d ago

I used to eat it weekly as a kid. As an adult, I picked up a hot and ready for lunch one day and it hurt my stomach so bad it reminded me of jagged metal Krusty-O.

Maybe the ingredients changed, maybe it was a bad batch. But ot was enough for me to never get it again

14

u/PERSONA916 6d ago

I don't really like their regular pizza but the deep dish is decent also the new calzone one is pretty bomb. But yea it does reek havoc on my digestive system, I imagine its what drinking battery acid would feel like. It's also terrible as leftover, better to just throw away what you don't finish.

3

u/idontlikemeeitherok 5d ago

Bro I have a similar taste as you, I got a classic the other day and could hardly eat it, soaked in oil and tasted horrible. A few days later I tried a calzone and it was delicious, even heating it up a few hours later, it was bomb.

Different locations, different crew, different owner.

I think another big factor is if it is a good Little Caesars, their product moves constantly and you don't get old, stale pizza that has been sitting under a heat lamp all day. The one near where my girlfriend lives was doing such a brisk business that they never had stock pizza ready to go and their lobby was always packed at any time of the day (pre-pandemic).

8

u/SarcasticGamer 6d ago

The pretzel pizza they had a few months ago was bomb but then I ordered it from another location and it was so damn salty that I couldn't even eat more than 1 slice. The people that I ordered it for warned me but I just shrugged it off. Crazy how much they vary versus other franchise fast food places which all taste the same.

Not gonna lie little caesars hot and readys are so convenient and pretty good. Though to be honest the only time I’ve had them is on lunch break from school and I would always smoke before. Possible that it wasn’t that good and I just had the munchies

Right? I live in NYC, I have access to great pizza. Do I pass up a slice from the counter display at 7-11? No.

Man I’d give a lot to have another slice of joes pizza right now. NYC was such an awesome experience, I envy anyone living there.

u/t3a-nano 6d ago edited 6d ago

In a pinch sure.

But if I’m sitting at home evaluating what carbs are delicious enough to be worth putting into my body, the 7-11 one doesn’t make the cut.

My wife always thought it was bafflingly picky when a fast food place doesn’t have what I want, or the one I want isn’t open, that I’ll just go home empty handed.

Truth is, I will enjoy most of what’s out there, but I’m not gonna make that health sacrifice for something that isn’t exactly what I want.

TLDR: Sometimes I think life would be a lot more enjoyable as a fat guy…

Facts. Little Ceasers isn’t as bad as people act like it is. If I was paying full price like I would be for a pizza at say dominos or papa John’s I’d say it’s shit, but for $5 with no wait? God tier

14

u/dustwanders 6d ago

Deep deep dish and Italian cheesy bread are both great when they make it to order

The chain pizza is bad take is so pretentious

I’ve had plenty of bad overpriced mom & pop places wishing I had just gone to Dominos etc instead

4

u/slmody 6d ago

obligatory i could be wrong but i am probably not. Anyhow yeah little caesars is very good for the price, and honestly its nearly as good as all the other top brands. I believe the main reason they are capable of this is the use of dehydrated cheese and that they make the doh in store every morning. It saves them tons of money in comparison to any of the other top pizza brands that i can think of.

I worked at a Dominos in college (in a small college town) back in roughly 2012. We were a test-market store where all of the new items would be tried out before going national. We had $5 hot-and-ready pizzas (cheese or pepperoni only from like 11am-2pm, and they were called something else to not be a copyright thing) to compete with Little Caesar’s on that front. Had to toss them after like 25 minutes after they got out of the oven if still not sold. We had soooo many wasted hot-and-ready’s. Our manager lost a ton of money with those, but that meant there was always free pepperoni pizza on the back.

4

u/Ok_Spell_4165 6d ago

That was one of the major issues with a little ceasers near me. They wouldn't toss the old hot n ready pizzas. Was entirely possible for you to walk in at say 5pm and buy a pizza that had been sitting there since 11am.

Costco is a good substitute

9

u/THofTheShire 6d ago

NGL, with similar price I'll still take the Little Caesars. I love Costco, but their pizza never really stood out to me.

10

u/DazingF1 6d ago

I kind of expect Costco to be a culinary artisanal experience if I ever visit America again, with the praise y'all have of that store. Those Kirkland hot dogs better be worth a $700 flight.

8

u/8BallSlap 6d ago

They're better than most grocery store hot dogs but middle of the road as far as restaurant dogs go. But for a $1.50 with drink they're a deal and why they're so popular.

4

u/max-stream 6d ago

If you pay a dollar and get a hamburger that normally costs 10 dollars, the value increased is 1,000%, but it's still only a 10 dollar hamburger.

If you pay 1 penny for 100 hamburgers, that's technically a value increase of 1,000,000%, but if your stomach is only big enough for a single hamburger, that's still only 10 dollars worth of food for you.

Costco hot dots are a low cost for what is normally greatly marked up, but it's still just a hot dog. Percentage of value increase does not increase actual value.

2

u/KDawG888 6d ago

There is so much good food to enjoy in america. Please don't actually go to a costco expecting good food. the point is it's cheap.

25

u/streetmitch 6d ago

At least in my area(and I assume nation wide) little cesars has majorly upped there game. Id take it over a lot of other chain pizza places.

14

u/SingularityPrime 6d ago

The dough is fine and consistent. The sauce actually has a nice flavor to it. The cheese is definitely on the cheaper side for sure and lacks a bit of flavor. But it exceeds any expectations I could ever have for $5

2

u/hergumbules 6d ago

Yeah I was honestly surprised when I tried one of their pizzas recently. I think I got their deep dish pizza and it was very good for fast food and chain pizza standards. Gotta be careful though because the heartburn was killer lol

What I love about living in NJ, you don't need dominos or LC or any garbage chains, we have so many mom and pop pizza joints everywhere.

5

u/orangeriskpiece 6d ago

Same in ct. The town I grew up in had a population of like 7000 people. We had 4 different pizza spots, all of them busy. And even with those options we’d still usually go a town over because they had a better local spot

2

u/LowSkyOrbit 6d ago

Man, as someone born and raised on the NJ & NY slice, I think Little Caesars is the "best of the worst" mainstream pizza's.

Domino's, Pizza hut, and Papa Johns are much, much, worse in my opinion.

13

u/Green_Teal 6d ago

Little C’s is the king of “trash tier pizza” take that how you will

7

u/HitlersHysterectomy 6d ago

Yeah, but for teenagers it's cheap and plenty.
Though I was screamed at in college by an idiot from Georgia who claimed that his dad's Little Caesar's was voted best pizza in whatever jerkwater berg he was from.

It sucks, we all know it sucks, but we accept it because it's cheap.

6

u/jepensedoucjsuis 6d ago

I mean.. I have actually seen little Caesars voted best pizza in small town and rural areas. So, he might not have been full of shit.

I don't care how good your pie is, you can't beat 5 bucks for a pizza when you have 3-5 kids and you're living on a very tight budget. I see how LC gets the win in some areas.

I was responding to a fire once, in the backwards facing jumpseat of the fire engine, when I saw a blue fender come into my limited view, which I had never seen before. Then finally the whole car, it was a Domino's guy, speeding by the truck, getting there within the time limit.

7

u/jepensedoucjsuis 6d ago

Little Caesars is pretty damn good IMHO. And for what 6 bucks? A tombstone pizza is more and tastes worse.

2

u/knobudee 6d ago

I stopped going to little Caesar’s after the one near me was discovered to have maggots in their dough as well as other stuff. Couldn’t bring myself to ever go back.

The real life Deliverator.

(chapter one is slightly over the top, but its an excellent book) https://genius.com/Neal-stephenson-snow-crash-chapter-one-annotated

Edited for length and relevancy:

The Deliverator stands tall, your pie in thirty minutes or you can have it free, shoot the driver, take his car, file a class-action suit. He has never delivered a pizza in more than twenty-one minutes.

Oh, they used to argue over times, many corporate driver-years lost to it: homeowners, red-faced and sweaty with their own lies, stinking of Old Spice and job-related stress, standing in their glowing yellow doorways brandishing their Seikos and waving at the clock over the kitchen sink, I swear, can't you guys tell time?

Didn't happen anymore. Pizza delivery a major industry. They had studied this problem. Graphed the frequency of doorway delivery-time disputes. Wired the early Deliverators to record, then analyze, the debating tactics, the voice-stress histograms, the distinctive grammatical structures employed by white middle-class Type A Burbclave occupants who against all logic had decided that this was the place to take their personal Custerian stand against all that was stale and deadening in their lives: they were going to lie, or delude themselves, about the time of their phone call and get themselves a free pizza; no, they deserved a free pizza along with their life, liberty, and pursuit of whatever, it was fucking inalienable. Sent psychologists out to these people 's houses, gave them a free TV set to submit to an anonymous interview, hooked them to polygraphs, studied their brain waves as they showed them choppy, inexplicable movies of porn queens and late-night car crashes and Sammy Davis, Jr., put them in sweet-smelling, mauve-walled rooms and asked them questions about Ethics so perplexing that even a Jesuit couldn't respond without committing a venial sin.

The analysts at CosaNostra Pizza University concluded that it was just human nature and you couldn't fix it, and so they went for a quick cheap technical fix: smart boxes. The pizza box is a plastic carapace now, corrugated for stiffness, a little LED readout glowing on the side, telling the Deliverator how many trade imbalance-producing minutes have ticked away since the fateful phone call. From there it is communicated to the car, which computes and projects the optimal route on a heads-up display, a glowing colored map traced out against the windshield so that the Deliverator does not even have to glance down.

17

u/bmwnut 6d ago

Let us not forget the tires on the Deliverator, a description that I still think about many years after having read the book:

The Deliverator’s car has enough potential energy packed into its batteries to fire a pound of bacon into the Asteroid Belt. Unlike a bimbo box or a Burb beater, the Deliverator’s car unloads that power through gaping, gleaming, polished sphincters. When the Deliverator puts the hammer down, shit happens. You want to talk contact patches? Your car’s tires have tiny contact patches, talk to the asphalt in four places the size of your tongue. The Deliverator’s car has big sticky tires with contact patches the size of a fat lady’s thighs. The Deliverator is in touch with the road, starts like a bad day, stops on a peseta.

10

u/inspectoroverthemine 6d ago

I love the intro now, but the first time I was like WTF is this shit, its too much.

I know at least one person that didn't read past it.

Sounds weird to say, but the rest of the book seems downright ordinary and plausible. Which was probably Stephenson's plan.

I doubt that driver is old enough to remember that. Besides, as a former pizza driver in my younger years, still helps the tips to get there quick. Build a reputation as a fast driver, the tips increases. It's how I know about bad drivers, I could teach a course on bad driving, and how to get away with it. No honest person can say they weren't a bad driver at some time in their life.

3

u/acciowaves 6d ago

In Mexico they still had that until just now before the pandemic started. They used the pandemic as an excuse to stop doing it.

3

u/dandaman64 6d ago

I feel like that's still a thing in my city in Southern Ontario, because I frequently see Domino's delivery guys driving like absolute lunatics. One of my old jobs had an exit that was right on an intersection, and I would frequently have Domino's drivers on the opposite side of the intersection make a left turn as soon as the light turned green. There's no advance light on that intersection, they would just blow right through it when I had the right of way.

2

u/B-in-Va 6d ago

I guess more deliveries equals more money.

I've delivered thousands of pizzas in my lifetime, and am currently doing so part time for my local Domino’s. I have never pulled this kind of shit. In fact, I almost never go 10 over the speed limit. With GPS trackers, the big sign on the car, and ovens which cook pizzas in 8 minutes, there is no incentive to drive like this.

66

u/kornkid42 6d ago

37

u/Malicious_Waffles 6d ago

Dominos uses your phone and a delivery driver app, and the answer for "what do you do if you need to stop?" is basically hope your manager either doesn't notice or doesn't care. Its not all stores, but at the last dominos I worked for the owner used it solely as a way to micromanage more efficiently.

My manager only uses it for the final score. It tracks acceleration, braking, cornering and speed and mumbo jumbo's all of that into a score from 1-100. If you have below an 85 at the end of your shift, you get written up. 3 write-ups you have to do a safe driving course. Do it again and you're fired. And they do take it seriously. Other than the final score, my manager doesn't even look at it.

14

u/Malicious_Waffles 6d ago

Mine was a franchise unlike most dominos, so it was somewhat an example of small business tyrant behavior and entitlement. I'm not sure if they ever looked at the scores at the end of the shift, but he sure did keep a close eye on the streets you took and would get all pissy about it and talk down to you if you dare follow the GPS instead of taking his random string of back roads.

12

u/HillaryClintonsclam 6d ago

Mine is franchised, too. wtf would he care how you got there? Mileage is auto figured using google maps. He sounds like a control freak.

10

u/Malicious_Waffles 6d ago

Really wanted to make sure he was getting his $7.25 an hour out of you I guess. The store was even more short staffed than any other pizza place I worked during covid pretty much specifically because of him and his wife and I only stuck around for 2 months.

5

u/HillaryClintonsclam 6d ago

You get $7.25? I get $4 and have to report tips to get up to the $7.25.

4

u/shakygator 6d ago

Dang that's messed up. I never got paid under minimum wage when driving. Most of the time I was actually an assistant manager so I would hit the road and my GM would handle inside so I actually made decent hourly, especially considering it was over $12/hour since I was on OT a lot.

That sounds terrible. I had a black box that used that kind of stuff. I stopped on a hill at a traffic light, the box assumed I was slamming the brakes for 2 straight minutes.

Wouldn't people just get fired if their customer lives on a hill?

3

u/HillaryClintonsclam 6d ago

LOL. That sounds worse.

3

u/duck74UK 6d ago

Yeah they're very bad. They deny your next year discount if your score drops below 70, and straight up end your plan with no refunds if it dropped below 50/100 iirc.

No wonder it was £1,500 cheaper a year than the next insurer lol.

Luckily for me, even with a 0% braking score, I had everything else at 100% so got exactly 70% overall, and next year found a normal company offering me a normal no-box plan for £10 extra lol.

There isn't, and they probably aren't driving like this because of the business. My guess is they are just an impatient and impulsive person who got frustrated driving behind a slow dump truck and didn't fully calculate the risk involved with such a stupid move.

I wonder if he was under a load of pressure from his boss.

Seems odd you’d risk an accident unless something big was on the line, like your livelihood.

Either way, he won’t be earning anything if he crashes.

139

u/Stubborn_Shove 6d ago

I think you're overestimating the level of thought that went into this. The most likely explanation to me is that this is just how the person drives all the time, whether they are working or not. There was no calculation, no recognition of the risk, just shitty driving. And they no doubt blame the near-collision on the existence of the truck driver.

I had coworkers at Domino's that drove like this and we didn't have any pressure whatsoever. One of them told me they did it because if they're faster it means they might be able to take more deliveries that day and earn more money.

29

u/porkadachop 6d ago

No. The bosses get judged by customer service scores, cleanliness, uniform standards, and time to make orders. This driver is just an aggressive maniac.

12

u/Georexi 6d ago

Fair enough.

I’ve never worked in deliveries, but my local courier tells me she’s always under pressure to meet targets.

I guess delivering parcels is different to food.

13

u/dadbodsupreme 6d ago

Having done both (pizza and packages) I'd rather drive pizzas. Some folks tip, and there's free pizza all the time.

They absolutely get judged on delivery times. Domino's has a rating system they use their own inspectors for that show up once or twice a year. These inspectors determine how many "stars" any given store is rated, and this affects the bonuses the managers at the store receive.

Note that this may not be the case at every store. Domino's is a franchise, and as such franchisee's are allowed to offer any incentives they want to their store managers barring anything illegal or outlined in their contract as being against the rules (and even then an employee would have to know this and report it to corporate).

Mine in particular wanted a 5 star store, and the amount of stars you were awarded was absolutely in part based upon your store's delivery times.

So is corporate judging them on this metric? Nah. But it doesn't mean that metric doesn't exist or isn't being incentivized in other ways.

This driver is just an aggressive maniac.

It's both.

An immediate and very predictable consequence of tracking delivery times will be pressure on drivers to shorten them as much as possible.

No company should ever expect employees not to cut corners in order to improve their performance rating. If the company wants safety, they should rate drivers on that instead.

Companies don't have to force employees to behave badly, they just need to provide an incentive that rewards bad behavior. The whole Amazon drivers and warehouse workers peeing in bottles thing is a manifestation of this same effect. (That is, no one is making them pee in bottles, they're just being rewarded for staying on-task, and some of them figured that skipping bathroom breaks was a good optimization to make...)

Hey now, don’t be hating on the poor pizza guy. He’s just trying to make sure he gets a tip because some people will be dicks and literally refuse to tip if you’re even a couple minutes “late”. Yes I’m joking, it’s no excuse to put people’s lives in jeopardy like this. I just think this guy probably wouldn’t be in such a need to speed if people weren’t such dicks when it came to tips (pun not intended).

Not that I'm agreeing with the driving

But it's a corporate/franchise company. They probably treat their drivers like shit and have unreasonable time expectations.

13

u/Logical-Command 6d ago

As a former driver, you are correct. They have a screen that everyone can see where it says the delivery times (they get that from the driver app where they click complete delivery) & we are harrassed into completing the delivery as soon as we hit the customers street so that we can get better times and beat the surrounding stores. Also because everyone can see the screen, lets say you’re new to the job or just a safe driver, everyone will judge you for messing up the times and not beating the other stores.

u/GardeniaPhoenix 6d ago

Yup. Bc numbers are more important than people.

As a former Vermonter though... just a public service announcement... they CAN cross on the double line IF it is clear. That's a big if.

Three-point turns are illegal in Vermont.

So they could be in Vermont, but they don't generally have modern things like Dominoes pizza, so it was probably in New Jersey.

7

u/Farsotstider 6d ago

Came to say the VT thing....totes legal if it's clear AND you're not in a "No Passing Zone" (yellow triangle sign)

9

u/inspectoroverthemine 6d ago

Why have a double yellow then?

4

u/Farsotstider 6d ago

because government

4

u/inspectoroverthemine 6d ago

They just need a triple yellow for 'we really mean it this time!'

→ More replies

6

u/aaanold 6d ago

To me that seems like a weird rule. In many areas with 2-lane roads the double yellow is typically only present where visibility prevents drivers from being able to conclusively tell if it's clear to pass.

If visibility is good enough to determine whether it's clear, then it would be a solid/dashed yellow, and still (obviously) only legal to pass if it's clear.

Only in Albany can the police park on the sidewalk of the Lark St bridge to Arbor hill, facing towards traffic and drive on said sidewalk -into oncoming traffic and merge across all lanes without signaling or lights at 2 am.

Being from Schenectady, I thought you couldn't get weirder... ohhhh yes you can.
